Scouts drop DEI, ‘pro-trans’ approach— hooray!

We’re overjoyed to see Scouting America, long known as the Boy Scouts of America, ditch the DEI policies it adopted amid the country’s post-2020 racial fever, as well as unwinding the dubious “pro-trans” approach it also felt obliged to undertake. Kudos to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon for prompting the review, which we hope settles the matter permanently. The left painted a bulls-eye on the Scouts years ago, aiming to browbeat a mainstay of wholesome American traditions into culture-war submission. As at many another institution, the folks in charge tried to compromise, betting that enough goodwill would allow the group to continue its core mission. They did not give ground on the oath:

Though these policies are of only recent adoption, the cancelation of DEI and trans is still overdue and more importantly, something that never should have been part of scouting. But starting and stopping ill-advised policies is sadly, par for the course of scouting nowadays. The renaming of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to Scouting America and the now unrestricted participation of girls and young women in scouting was the consequence of earlier short-lived policies. The legal turmoil over prior sex abuse of boys and potentially ruinous financial penalties caused BSA to announce during Obama's presidency that no homosexual could be a scout or scout leader. In response, President Obama, the US military under his authority, and cities like San Francisco retaliated by forbidding scouts or scouting units including the national organization from using any of their facilities or properties. This threatened BSA's quadrennial national jamboree and its many year use of a military base in Virginia. So BSA backtracked and rescinded that first policy by saying it was okay for gays to be scouts. The next consequences were BSA losing hundreds of thousands of scouts and scouting leaders when the Mormons and the Southern Baptists withdrew from their support of Scouting. That is why BSA changed its name and opened the doors to girls quite simply for financial survival. SA would still be BSA were it not for the policy haste we've now seen with DEI and trans. I say to SA - SLOW DOWN! Stop the hurry - PLEASE!

My niece and her family recently moved to Pittsburgh. The boys are in scouts, the older one is working on his Eagle rank. They tell me that the troop they are in is good. I'm hoping that scouting has turned the corner.

Prove it, and change the organization's name back to the original. Are you all cowards? Hardly a positive step forward as a leadership lesson for young men.

No. They meet minimal (revised) policy standards to retain DoD support but not much else changes. There will continue to be girl "Boy Scouts" and gay leaders /members will continue to be accepted. Its not to the organization that I participate in.

Grooming Gangs and the Failure of Social Science 6 replies

I recently came across a work of anthropology which, more than anything else I’ve read, explains the context in which the predominantly Pakistani (and most notoriously, Mirpuri) grooming gangs developed in Britain. The work is Professor Alison Shaw’s 1980s fieldwork on the Pakistani community of Oxford, which she wrote up in A Pakistani Community in Britain (1988), and subsequently revised in Kinship and Continuity: Pakistani Families in Britain (2000). Like most academic books, it is absurdly expensive to buy, but the revised edition, which is the one I have, is available to download on Anna’s Archive.

President Trump addressed the housing affordability crisis in his State of the Union address last week. “Another pillar of the American dream that has been under attack has been home ownership,” he said in the speech before Congress. He shared the story of a hard-working mom who was outbid on 20 different homes by “gigantic investment firms that bypassed inspection, paid all cash, and turned all those houses into rentals, stealing away her American dream.” Trump said this story is now sadly common in America, but the administration is eager to fix it through an executive order —

The regime of the imams is trying to show defiance after the crushing blow of Khamenei’s death. While many observers look for ‘offramps’ for the US, Israel and Iran to cease the war that’s setting the whole Middle East on fire, signs on the ground suggest the hostilities may go on for a long time. Following the death of its supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranians have raised the ‘red flag of revenge’ above the Jamkaran Mosque, located in the city of Qom. “According to several media reports, a red banner, which symbolizes justice and revenge in Shiite tradition, was seen atop the Jamkaran Mosque.

In a statement on social media, Reza Pahlavi said that the military operation initiated by President Trump should be seen as a “humanitarian intervention” targeting the Islamist regime —

Russia is responsible for the largest “systematic child abduction operation” since World War II, according to European Union Ambassador to the U.S. Jovita Neliupšiene. “This is actually a civilization erasure, when you actually try to destroy the future of your neighboring country,” Neliupšiene says. More than 20,000 children are estimated to have been abducted from Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion four years ago, according to the ambassador. Some of the older children who were taken are now being trained to fight for the Russian army, she explains on this week’s edition of “Problematic Women.”

The second Trump administration is very different from the first. As 45th president, Donald Trump was saddled with disloyal officials who constantly undermined his agenda. The Ukraine impeachment scandal, among other events, was the result of this internal subversion. But the second term sets a new standard for loyalty. The administration will no longer tolerate rogue officials making their own policy. This was made clear last week when the administration pushed out Gail Slater, the Justice Department’s antitrust chief. Slater made a name for herself by going against administration policy and insisting on her personal priorities. While some misguided conservatives praised Slater as a “MAGA patriot,”

President Trump's decision to launch a war against Iran without congressional signoff has splintered lawmakers, largely along party lines, and supercharged the debate over war powers authority. While most Republicans largely rallied around Trump’s decision to carry out the massive joint attack with Israel, Democrats quickly denounced the attack as an illegal “war of choice” and demanded Congress come back to Washington to take a vote on whether to authorize another Middle East invasion. Democratic leaders have vowed to forge ahead with their plans to force a vote on a war powers resolution next week in the House that would block Trump from carrying out additional strikes.
