U.S. Should Destroy Fordow — but Only
If Israel Can’t

Israel's remarkable early success in its campaign against Iran has clearly won over President Trump, who has now taken to using the term “we” when discussing the operation. This has increased the debate over whether — and to what extent — the U.S. should join the effort. In under a week, Israel has achieved complete air supremacy, allowing its pilots to hit targets in Iran without fear of harassment. Though the conflict has taken a toll (Iran’s indiscriminate ballistic missile attacks have killed dozens of Israelis and injured hundreds more), the Iranian counterstrikes have not destroyed any significant strategic targets.

"he should seek congressional approval for such a potential action, and the House and Senate should give it to him posthaste. " No, he shouldn't. This is a case where the President needs the freedom to take action when necessary and asking for forgiveness is better than asking for permission. The vile dems will use permission seeking as a political weapon and political theater. They will twist a potential NECESSARY step into absurdities with their ONLY goal to attack Trump. Let's not forget that the bomb we are talking about Is NOT nuclear. It is a really, really BIG conventional weapon. It would be used against a specific military target. It would be similar to bombing the Houthis which has gone on without serious challenge from ANYONE beyond the regular "We hate Israel and the US crowd. Fordow is about 28 miles from the city of Qom. The largest risk is spread of nuclear debris after the explosion. Warnings can be given to clear the immediate area. The Iranians can do nothing to defend the plant or move it. They already know the plant is a target. Overall, damage would be well targeted and contained. The opportunity to eliminate 50 years of vile Iranian actions is NOW. Not destroying Fordow could leave a messy situation in play, for an indeterminate amount of time. It would always be an attractive nuisance if left intact, a lure for bad actors to get their hands on enriched nuclear materials. Burying it under tons of rock is the best solution and it removes the last bargaining chip and threat from the Iranian mullahs. Trump must make the decision but his hands should not be tied in any way. There are LOTS of excellent reasons to bomb Fordow and there will always be niggling complaints about doing it. Trump has shown he is willing to take bold, decisive, and limited actions to achieve important goals. It's time to wrap up this mess. Delay is NOT helpful to the situation. Israel has set the table. Let's join the party in a precise, significant, and meaningful way.

If it was possible for a B-2 to take off with Lizzo on board, that would save us a bunch of money and Iran would probably surrender before it dropped her on the target.

Hell no! The Dems and certain Reps would rather let Iran nuke us than support anything Trump says or does. Their hatred of Trump is tantamount to the hatred Iran has for Israel and America, and the Dems always give into that hatred at the expense of the people in our country, America is always last with them. Just look at the suffering and the chaos they have caused and continue to cause every day. Trump should do what he thinks is best for us, screw the politics of it and the politicians.

Physics and engineering are sciences. If what we understand about Fordow to be true ARE true... Israel cannot destroy it with conventional ordinances. It will take a bunker buster or three to stand a chance. The only way Israel can do it is if the general consensus is true and they use nukes to do it. Not a good idea.

Fordow MUST be destroyed. If it isn't, all of this effort by Israel will have been wasted because the Iranians will still have their nuclear material and the necessary infrastructure and devices to complete their initial nukes. We are the only country capable of destroying Fordow with a non-nuclear weapon. If Fordow isn't destroyed, Iran WILL finish building its initial nukes. AND they'll be madder than ever with even more intent to use them. Do it now or suffer the consequences.

I agree with the posters who say take Fordow out now. Trump seems to be the one to do it, since he knows there will be some political fallout and is willing to accept it to do what’s right and damn the torpedos. It's his final term, and saving the US from the fanatical demons in Iran and elsewhere is his priority.

Let's have a scientist's view of a bunker buster's chance of success: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TriASB-F5UY Of course it depends on how many we keep dropping. On a side note, notice how PDJT has been diverted from all his pre-election promises. I didn't hear the destruction of Iran on the list. Until that is Bibi inserted his needs and the IC reminded the Pres. of their Brookings 2009 roadmap "Plan for Persia".

By the same token everyone on the planet has just cause to take out Los Alamos or wherever such things are done nowadays. After all, we've proven we are willing and able to use nukes on an enemy. We've done it. See how this works? Our hypocrisy seems to know no limits. I really despise Moslems and do not shed tears at their fates, but lets not con ourselves into thinking there is virtue here.

If that installation is several hundred feet underground just bomb out all the tunnel access points and air shafts. Conventional ordnance should suffice. Turn it into a tomb. Then, at the first sign of excavation on the site, blow that up too. And BTW, any runway long enough to handle a Piper cub should be turned into rubble. I don't want to see another C17 class Chinese military transport delivering ANYTHING to Iran.

#9, I don’t know about everyone, but I would remember that David slew a huge, well armored and well armed giant with only a stone and a sling shot, and - more importantly - faith in Almighty God. I would pray for God’s providential blessing and shoot the bear - trusting that God had heard my cry, that He was with me, and knowing that His will would be done. I’m praying for God’s providential blessings on POTUS, and all involved in the decisions and actions before them in this situation. We have the wherewithal to prevent mankind from being in the position that Iran finds itself in right now. Do we act now, or allow untrustworthy actors the opportunity for control to act irrationally in the future. #1’s points are well taken, and I agree with him. This is beyond the ability of man to decide and do on his own. Sometimes we just have to trust in God and do the hard things. Let God be our guide. God’s will be done.

In WW2, in the Pacific, there was a squadron of three destroyer escorts. They wer ethe USS England, the USS George and the USS Raby. They were assigned as an anti-submarine group to hunt down and sink Japanese submarines. USS England had, at the start, only a bit over five months in commission. Clearly the crew had trained well, and were absolutely on the ball, even though very "green". On May 18, 1944 USS England was sent after Japanese sub I-16. She made five runs with her Hedgehog ASW mortar system, and sunk the sub. USS George detected another sub, and attacked, getting no hits. England then attacked, and also missed. A second pass by England sank the sub, on May 22, 1944. The squadron detected another Japanese sub the next day and the squadron commander sent in USS George and USS Raby for the kill. After eight attacks over two hours, the squadron commander ordered in the USS England, who sunk the third sub with the second pass. The other ships were getting an inferiority complex. The next day, the England made a sonar contact, and attacked with Hedgehogs and sank another sub. The inferiority complex grew on the other ships. After being relived, the group of DEs headed away from the sub picket zone, taken over by a larger group of destroyers. As they headed away, the day after they disengage, USS England made a sonar contact and attacked, sinking their fifth sub kill in eight days. Their squadron ships were feeling very inferior. After a resupply stop for more Hedgehogs and fuel, they joined another hunter-killer group on May 31, 1944. Another sub was detected and the flotilla commander ordered England to stay back and let the other ships have a chance. Ove r the next 25 hours multiple ships made depth charge attacks and 20 Hedgehog attacks without success. Finally the England was ordered in and sunk the sub, her sixth kill, on her first Hedgehog attack. Six subs sunk in two weeks by one destroyer escort, with a "green crew".....who were NOT green by the end, they were the best ever in the Pacific. So.....sometimes you lay back and let the other guys "have a go", and if they fail, you eventually send in the first team to do the job.

If Israel could do the job on Fordow, they would have done it already. They can't. And the longer we wait, the more time we give Iran to get as much nuclear material and centrifuges/etc. moved out of Fordow as possible. The Chinese flew in multiple large cargo planes. They didn't go there to deliver tourist T-shirts. The clock is ticking. Take out Fordow and everything in it while it's still there.

Israel doesn't have the ordnance or the delivery vehicles. US does... only the US as PDJT is right: Nobody else has the MOP. Best Israel could do would be to send in a commando team, which might or might not be able to breach the entries, would cost a lot of IDF soldiers their lives, and there would be no guarantee that the underground facility would be destroyed. After the MOP is dropped, some commandos will probably still have to be sent in to assure that the facility is destoyed. And beyond that, the only assurance the rest of the globe will have against Fordow being resuscitated is regime change. So we need all three -- MOPs, commandos, and regime change. We should stop navel gazing and get on with it.

Take out Fordow now. One, two, three bunker busters if needed then let the Israeli air force saturate bomb the surrounding area. Any appurtenant structures, any access tunnels etc.

A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to release Mahmoud Khalil, an anti-Israel activist at Columbia University who has been in immigration detention for three months as the administration looks to deport him for his role in orchestrating demonstrations on the school’s campus. We've talked about this topic before but as Nate Silver points out today, it probably gets less attention than it should. Let's just start with the chart so you can refer back to it. As the legend indicates, this is a 0-100 point scale where 100 is "excellent" and 0 is "poor." As you can see, conservatives are significantly happier than liberals in every subcategory of gender, race, age and education. And the chart keeps going with a look at income, religion, marriage, sexual orientation and political activity. Here's a bit of what Silver has to say about these results which come from a large survey with 60,000 respondents.

Wowza. It's no surprise that Israel has destroyed Iran's Arak nuclear reactor. After all, it was a key element of Iran's program to build nuclear weaponry, and a very vulnerable target. The only strategic reason not to attack it was the fact that it could have contained highly radioactive material, and Israel had to balance the benefit of denying its use to Iran against the consequences of releasing dangerous and long-lived radioactive material if the supposedly inactive reactor held fissionable material.
