We thought at first that it must be an April Fool’s joke until we saw the date the story was posted. On April 3, Bloomberg reported that Republicans “are weighing the creation of a new bracket for those earning $1 million or more to offset some of the costs of their tax bill.” Earlier in the year, Politico reported that members of the House Freedom Caucus were considering boosting the corporate tax rate to 25% to “pay for” a doubling of the cap on state and local tax deductions. As our friend Steve Moore put it: “I mean, Republicans, are they crazy?” “Crazy” is putting it mildly.

So far, President Donald Trump has been piloting his second term like Maverick from “Top Gun.” With one exception. The tariff rollout has been FUBAR, which is troubling since it’s Trump’s signature economic policy issue.
There have been glaring missteps along the way, repeated pauses, confused and conflicting messaging, turf wars. It’s draining public support and causing real economic problems as businesses can’t make plans while all this is in flux.
We aren’t privy to insider gossip to speculate why this is. But we can say that Trump needs to get his tariff act together, and fast.

Both online and print media are full of talk about an economic recession, one that’s either already here or ready to hit. How much of the recession angst is driven by the media? Are Americans worried about a recession now, and if so, who will get the blame? The I&I/TIPP Poll sought answers to these questions in its April survey.
The national online poll, taken by 1,452 adults from March 26 to March 28, first asked this:

No doubt you’ve already heard the news that inflation actually declined in March on a month-to-month basis for the first time in almost three years, and fell to 2.4% on a yearly basis. This is horrible news, at least for the Democratic Party, which continues to hope for the worst under President Donald Trump.
Economists had actually expected inflation to rise for the month. Instead, this is the first time since July 2022 that the index declined. “Surprising,” said a number of headlines.
Recall for a moment last year’s bold promise from Trump on inflation: “Prices will come down and come down dramatically and come down fast,” he said.
When the Justice Department announced a criminal investigation into rampant waste and fraud in California’s multi-billion-dollar homelessness boondoggle, our first question was, why stop there? The state has poured hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars into a bullet train, water reservoirs, COVID relief, free health care, public schools, and has nothing to show for any of it.
Why should anyone outside California care? Because the state wasn’t just wasting its own taxpayers’ money – a lot of it came from Uncle Sam. And because the state’s current governor desperately wants to succeed Donald Trump in the White House.

‘Hands Off’ Irony Is Lost On The Left

We were bemused at the Orwellian doublespeak of the weekend protests, which were waged under the banner of “hands off.”
Hands off? What the protesters really want is for the government to keep its hands on – on our throats choking out our freedoms and in our pockets stealing our money.
Naturally, the protesters describe themselves as “defending democracy” and the current situation a “crisis.” What else is new?
But this particular effort – reported by most of the press to be “massive,” encompassing, said CNN, “scores of people” (20s of people?) – was more mindless than usual.

A judge in Collin County slashed the 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony’s initial $1 million bond and said he may await trial at home with an ankle monitor and 24-hour supervision from his parents or an “adult designee.”
Anthony has been locked in Collin County Jail for allegedly stabbing Austin Metcalf, also 17, in the heart during a fight over a seat at a track meet on April 2. He is charged with first-degree murder.

After Trump’s exchange with Kaitlin Collins of CNN today, he suggested that CNN hates our country. Every Trump supporter knows why he said this. Almost everyone on that network is anti-Trump and anti-Trump supporters.
When CNN cut back to the studio, it was absolutely clear that host Dana Bash was not happy about Trump’s comments and she addressed them while looking visibly bothered and frustrated.
