President-elect Donald Trump held a "very good" phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday, discussing critical issues like the ongoing fentanyl crisis and the U.S. ban on TikTok. As the United States grapples with skyrocketing drug overdoses and concerns over Chinese-backed apps infiltrating American society, Trump’s direct approach to these matters stands in stark contrast to the lackluster responses from the current administration. By engaging with Xi, Trump signals his commitment to holding China accountable while safeguarding American interests, especially as the nation faces challenges that impact both national security and public health.

Judge Aileen Cannon during a hearing on Friday appeared skeptical of Merrick Garland’s plan to give Jack Smith’s Volume 2 final report on Trump’s classified documents case to Congress.
Cannon repeatedly asked DOJ lawyers why they needed to show the classified documents report to lawmakers. The Judge also asked if the final report was safeguarded from being leaked to the public.
“Why is there such urgency to disclose this to Congress right now, prior to the conclusion of the criminal proceeding — which would seem to be the ordinary course?” Cannon asked DOJ attorney Elizabeth Shapiro,

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief Kristin Crowley, the first woman and openly gay person to serve in the position, is facing calls to resign as the destructive wildfires rage on in Southern California.
Crowley has found herself in an awkward situation with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D), who has also received demands to step down, after she said the city “failed” her department and claimed that budget cuts “limited” their ability to respond to “large-scale events.” The fire chief, who was appointed by then-Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) in 2022, then “disappeared” into a closed-door meeting in Bass’s office last Friday “for so long that they missed

Washington— President Biden and his aides have spent their final days in office announcing 32 executive actions — on topics from immigration to offshore drilling — aimed at tying up President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
The lame-duck 82-year-old’s flurry of late moves to try to make himself a hero to Democrats and obstruct his successor’s agenda include: (Photo) Deportation protection

Granting Temporary Protected Status to almost 1 million people, meaning they are protected from deportation and entitled to work permits. The action, decreed by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Jan. 10, shields 234,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians and 600,000 Venezuelans for a period of 18 months.

As relieved as I am that Trump will take the helm of the nation on Monday, I will watch Joe Biden wander off into the sunset and the sand dunes of Rehoboth Beach with a slight pang of regret.Hear me out: Joe Biden was a one-man blooper reel. He was a never-ending source of fodder for columnists and humorists and never failed to amaze, baffle, and sometimes even terrify those of us tasked with chronicling and commenting on the last four years. Potential senility aside, were it not for the fact that he is a mean-spirited, corrupt, avaricious, and vindictive old man who felt entitled

A group of California firefighters stopped an alleged looter from robbing a burned-down house and jetting off with an Emmy Award that had miraculously survived the fiery carnage of the Eaton Fire.
Smoke eaters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were working in a burned-down Altadena neighborhood on Thursday when they came across two suspicious people who were leaving one of the properties.
One of the firefighters confronted a woman – wearing a dark sweatshirt and skirt over sweatpants – carrying possessions from the home including the prestigious award.

Less than a week ago, readers might recall that Special Counsel Jack Smith announced his retirement from the Justice Department (DOJ)--as we noted, heading out the door before Trump could fire him. After that news made the rounds, Missouri GOP Senator Eric Schmitt reacted to it by not only sharing his thoughts on Smith's undistinguished tenure, but blasted the lawfare that happened during his time at the DOJ. That was only a harbinger of more troubles for the Biden administration's laxness in doing its job. On Friday, Sen. Schmitt is now ringing the warning bells about what he describes as an "unprecedented hack of sensitive FBI information"

Billionaire Bill Gates revealed he recently had an “intriguing” three-hour dinner with President-elect Donald Trump — and he was left “frankly impressed” by their sit-down.
“I had a chance, about two weeks ago, to go have a long and actually quite intriguing dinner with him,” Gates told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Friday.
The Microsoft co-founder, 69, said much of their “wide-ranging” dinner table chat focused on global health challenges.
“I felt like he was energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation,” the tech titan said of Trump, 78. “I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues

President-elect Donald Trump is moving to drain the swamp yet again, and this time, he is making it clear that his administration does not want anyone who worked for, or is endorsed by, politicians suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, providing a few examples.
“As of today, the incoming Trump Administration has hired over 1,000 people for The United States Government,” Trump announced on Truth Social on Thursday, describing them as “outstanding in every way.”
“… and you will see the fruits of their labor over the coming years. We will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and it will happen very quickly!” he exclaimed before making his request clear, highlighting several politicians

It’s been a rather busy week in Florida news. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that Attorney General Ashley Moody was replacing Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who is expected to be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State. James Uthemier has also been named as Moody’s replacement. And, a special legislative session was called at the start this week, to take place on January 27. Not only are lawmakers to look into illegal immigration, but petition fraud as well.Last November, Amendment 3, which would have legalized recreational marijuana in the state, and Amendment 4, which would have allowed for unlimited abortions in the state, both enjoyed a majority support.

Multiple local police departments from areas surrounding Washington, DC will reportedly refuse to assist with security for Trump’s inauguration on Monday as the swearing-in ceremony has been moved indoors.
The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that President Trump announced his ceremony will be held inside the Capitol Rotunda, citing cold weather. However, there have also been concerns about Trump’s safety following the two recent assassination attempts.(Snip)

In the final weeks of any presidential administration, the assessments of their time in office - and their political legacy - pick up apace, with everyone wanting to give their opinions on where they went wrong and where they went right, how they stack up against past presidents, etc.
That has certainly been true not just for Joe Biden, but for members of his administrative team as well including Cabinet members like impeached Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who conservatives believe should not be remembered fondly due to his repeated failures to secure the southern border, as well as his obscene gaslighting when called to testify
