California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) appointed Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) to the Senate to complete the rest of appointee Sen. Laphonza Butler’s (D) term. The appointment means Schiff, who has served in the House since 2001 and won election to the Senate last month, will begin work in the upper chamber several weeks before the start of the next Congress in early January. Butler replaced the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) in October 2023 and said she would not run for a full term, opening the race up to Schiff and others.

Actually the people of California picked him when they elected him for the next term. The only thing Newsom did was give him a head start. Schiff is what you wipe off your shoe when you step in dog poop, but that seems to be what California likes about him.

The Iranian regime is obsessive: It obsessively hates Israel and the United States, it obsessively persecutes women, and it obsessively targets dissidents, Jews and politicians abroad. Even as the Revolutionary Islamic Government’s proxy forces falter, sapping the mullahs’ supposed strength, they show no signs of giving up their fixations. That is why the United States must take up an obsession of its own — one that applies maximum pressure on Iran. On Nov. 8, three men were charged in a New York court in connection with an Iranian attempt to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump.

The FBI spoke to Luigi Mangione’s mother the night before her son’s high-profile arrest and told the feds he bore a resemblance to the suspect wanted for killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to law enforcement sources. Members of the Joint Violent Crimes Task Force questioned Kathleen Mangione late Sunday night after receiving a tip from San Francisco police – four days prior – about a missing person’s report the family had filed with the department in November, the sources said. Police tipped off the feds after they recognized the 26-year-old’s face in surveillance images put out by the NYPD after Thompson, 50,

Experts are worried about how President-elect Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy as Health and Human Services secretary will affect vaccination rates for school children, which have been on the decline. Schools have seen a drop in childhood vaccinations since the COVID-19 pandemic, when critics of the COVID-19 vaccines increased anti-vaccine sentiments in generalizing . Public health groups see vaccines as a huge bulwark against disease and fear Kennedy will only increase skepticism if he is confirmed.

President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter Biden – with years attached for personal reasons – still bothers me in a number of ways. Here’s a guy who went back on his promise not only to lawmakers but also to the American people. All for the sake of protecting his son’s hide, as well as his own. But I think some recent comments provided by Federal District Judge Mark C. Scarsi really sum up the big problem with the pardon, which took place early last week.Speaking with NBC News earlier in the week, Scarsi, who was also working on Biden’s then-tax case,

Dominic Cummings is an unusual man. When I first saw his name, in Tim Shipman’s book Brexit: All Out War, I imagined him as a sort of vast Chesterton or Mycroft Holmes figure, doing everything by the power of mind. But then I saw a picture: and he looked more like a Dickensian character, Traddles or Clennam or someone. Funny, since his critique is that of Dickens in Little Dorrit, that the art of government, regrettably, is “How Not To Do It”. Cummings is unusual for being both a cog in the machinery of the state and also a spanner in the works of the state.

It’s the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations announced Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, 1 in 5 prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press.

If your third-grader is competing in the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee, good news: “W-O-M-Y-N” is now an acceptable spelling of “women.” (What a time to be alive!) In fact, “W-O-M-Y-N” is explicitly listed on the National Spelling Bee’s list of 50 “study words” that’s distributed to third-graders. Nobody knows when spoken language began, but written language developed independently in Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and Mesoamerica. Presumably, shortly after the emergence of writing, was the emergence of the crotchety, ornery, spinster schoolteacher who’d shame you before the class when you misspelled a word. And now, the proper spelling of women is “W-O-M-Y-N.”
