Imprisoned American journalist Evan Gershkovich will be freed from a Russian prison Thursday as part of a prisoner swap with Moscow, according to reports.
Gershkovich will return to the US after spending 16 months in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison alongside serial killers and other political prisoners, sources told Bloomberg News.
A senior Biden administration also told ABC News that Gershkovich will be released alongside former US Marine Paul Whelan in the extraordinary deal.

This is great news, but I can't help being cynical considering this is an election year. BTW, what are we giving up in return?

1, 8 merchants of death, 16 global terrorists, 32 billion dollars, and a partridge in a pear tree for a CIA guy who got caught.

They kidnap Americans to trade for their spies. Old, old game. I am very pleased to not travel to Russia any more.

Totally agree with all of you. A prisoner swap is a spy swap. Period.

Re #2, probably not even a CIA guy. They kidnap anyone that they think they can use. They kidnapped six British Petroleum engineers when I was there because BP after being suckered into a deal to "partner" with the Russian national oil company to redevelop their moribund oil and gas industry, with BP becoming a 49% partner and providing all the money and expertise to rebuild massive areas of Russian oil and gas infrastructure. Once they had all the work done, the Russian oil company decided that they wanted to "buy out" BP.....for 20% of the legit value. BP refused, and Russian threatened, said something like "this is the best offer you can get". BP refused again, so six engineers were "arrested for spying" (total BS) and held for six months until BP settled for a LOWER value.
Never, EVER do business with Russia. It is a gangster country, corrupt top to bottom with zero morals or ethics.

Thank goodness for the prisoner exchange today. It takes the Trump comments in Chicago yesterday off the top of the news. He was correct but the left, of course, played it against him. That woman was so rude! He just needs to focus on one thing only - are you better off today than 4 years ago - single election issue. Stay away from her being a phony, an idiot, lazy, stupid… (all true but people don’t want to hear it). Drill, drill, drill, I won’t make you get an EV, I won’t take your gas stove or FURNACE away,….

Let's see. We traded an international arms merchant for a ungrateful lesbian basketball player stupid enough to bring drugs into Russia. If there's any Russian spies left in American jails after this, I'd be shocked.

Threatening to send back Brittney Griner obviously sealed the deal.

Russia is a rat's nest. It's always been a rat's nest. I wouldn't be caught dead in that place. It ought to be off limits for Americans, and we shouldn't let any Russians into America either. If they aren't spies, they're criminals.

Glad to see those Americans coming home. But the Russians know that during the run up to the US General Election is the best time for them to hit up Biden, Harris, and the American Democrats for a prisoner swap, as those American politicians will agree to any kind of a deal if they believe it will get them some votes from their low information base of voters. So in that respect you can expect an unbalanced prisoner swap greatly favoring the Russians and a good number of their nasty operatives. You can bet on that!

As for “ Marine” Paul Whelan in
my eyes a SNCO who receives a Big Chicken Dinner for theft is as much a “ Marine” as one Lee Harvey Oswald.

The word is out on the international street, Americans will trade money for hostages and perform prisoner swaps. Putin gets his assassins back, Tehran gets billions of dollars, and Americans get laughed at.
