Are you aware that there have been two near-catastrophes at major American airports (DC Reagan and NY JFK) where airplanes were cleared to cross runways as another airplane was taking off? (snip) The first incident took place last Thursday, April 18, at Reagan National Airport when the tower controller ordered a Southwest jet to cross a runway as a Jet Blue plane was taking off. (snip) A mere 3 days later, at JFK Airport, a Swiss Airlines jumbo jet was at the end of the runway cleared for takeoff when multiple airliners, including a Delta jumbo jet were cleared to cross the runway.

I've flown in and out of Reagan a couple of times in private aircraft, and it's a very busy place. Everyone at any large airport has to have their thinking caps on and be listening to ALL the ATC calls, not just their own. If you listen, you can hear who is cleared to do what on the active runway. And not does not matter if the ground controller tells you "cleared to cross"....you darned well better be paying attention to the tower calls like "Cleared to takeoff on 4"....if you are getting ready to cross Runway 4. Pilots are part of this 'safety net' too. This is always true, at any airport, but at lower intensity places, it's easier for each pilot to keep track of what is going on overall. And a smart pilot is listening to the whole flow of aircraft, and knows what his correct call from ATC should be BEFORE it comes. And if the ATC clearance isn't what he expects.....a good pilot will think about it a bit, and if unclear, get clarification. Humans involved, BEWARE. Pay close attention. Are these some of the cripples and mental defectives that FAA has announced that they are seeking for ATC jobs? Who knows? Hope that somewhere, someone requires MERIT in controllers along with in the cockpit. This stuff is fairly complex, and dimwits cannot handle it.

#7: The problem at DCA was that the taxiing SW jet was still on ground control freq. He was cleared to cross runway 4, and directed to contact tower on the other side, on his way to lineup and takeoff on runway 1. The JetBlue had lined up in position on runway 4, and was on tower freq, where he received takeoff clearance. The SW jet could not have heard the "JetBlue xxxx, cleared for takeoff, runway 4."

#17 is correct. DEI may be off the hook for these incidents as the general quality and competence of America's entire work force has gone way downhill since the presidency of the Magic Kenyan. Many don't care, understand what real customer service is, or are educated well enough in schools to even understand that they are not as good as those who went before them. Lunch and Starbucks latte breaks are the main focus of the day. Technical specialties everywhere are suffering from mediocrity.

My older son is a captain for a major carrier. Flies into/out of JFK on occasion. Indeed, according to him, JFK is an extremely busy airport. Taxiing as well as landing and takeoff rolls require maximum awareness and focus. Lifson suggests that some of the airport's controllers are DEI hires and not the sharpest knives in the drawer. I have no idea if this is the case. But obviously JFK airport should be staffed with the best controllers regardless of their race, melanin levels, and ethnic backgrounds.

Pretty obvious DEI/ AA hires play a role--it should be the only best most qualified in IMHO-- in the ATC environment but different frequencies between ground and tower and the handoff were the most likely the cause in the chain of events. Having been on Class A mishaps in the military.

Trust is foundational in relationships, whether between individuals or between individuals and institutions. Aren’t these the “experts” in white coats? What happened to that trust? Why do only 1 in 3 Americans trust what was once a sacred healing profession? The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has pushed back production at its second Arizona foundry. The remaining major chipmaker, Samsung, just delayed its first Texas fab. This is not the way companies typically respond to multi-billion-dollar subsidies. So what explains chipmakers’ apparent ingratitude? Revenge, in contrast, is a form of personal punishment, one not sanctioned by law. The ultimate goal of Retribution is to punish the wrongdoer or offender and ensure that justice is served to the victim and public as a whole.
