The Kill Switch

Original Article

Soon the government might shut down your car. President Joe Biden's new infrastructure gives bureaucrats that power. You probably didn't hear about that because when media covered it, few mentioned the requirement that by 2026, every American car must "monitor" the driver, determine if he is impaired and, if so, "limit vehicle operation." Rep. Thomas Massie objected, complaining that the law makes government "judge, jury and executioner on such a fundamental right!" Congress approved the law anyway. A USA Today "fact check" told readers, don't worry, "There's no kill switch in Biden's bill." (Snip) The clause is buried under Section 24220 of the law.

Comments:

I hope someone is keeping a list of horrible Biden things Trump has to get rid of if he gets into office. On his first day he should do what Biden did to him on *his* first day.

I turn that thing off #1 as soon as I start the car. The first time I drove a car with that feature and stopped at a red light, I started to panic because I thought the rental car had died on me at a busy intersection. Same thing with these lane warning systems where the steering wheel vibrates. I thought the brand new rental car wasn't aligned properly.

Oh it's there. If you have a Toyota they highly encourage you to install their app. Once installed you have to dig, but in the monitoring section it has all kinds of info about your driving habits - taking corners too fast, hard acceleration, etc. I guess that sounds well and good except I drive mine very conservatively so I have no idea what it expects. I just know I am being recorded. Oh, and if you ridiculously sign up for their "anonymous" sending this data to insurance companies (yes, it's a service you can opt-in) just bet you are not anonymous.

More and more modern cars are being equipped with software that includes "Geo-Fencing" - that's "Where are you allowed to go" and "Geo-Timing" - that's "When are you allowed to go". In a lock-down governments will use these "features" to freeze you in place. If you buy one of these semi-auto-mobiles, you get what you deserve...

Re #1, all the cars that I am familiar with have way to turn off that 'shut down at stoplight' crap. The Euroweenies seem to be especially fond of that. I rented a BMW in England back nearly 20 years ago and the damned thing did that until we parked, got out the owner's manual and figured out how to turn it off. My Porsche has it, but there is a console button to disable it, and it STAYS disabled.

The best way to disable GPS in a car is to disconnect or remove the antenna. The cellular antenna too. Just use your phone for those things, don't use the vehicle for these utilities. In fact, consider the modern vehicle to be a Gov't data collection device. I have a car that can cruise comfortably at 110 MPH. There is no place even close to that speed limit. I suppose the car will report to the Authorities when and where the car exceeds the maximum speed limit. In addition, some Authorities want to monitor mileage and position for taxing purposes. License plate readers already track us but this can be correlated to speed also. Do you use Waze, Google, etc. to drive? Your speed and position are tracked and recorded. Ain't all of these devices convenient?

Most "smart tech" becomes obnoxiously overbearing in overriding the human operator's choices. The new "driver assist" functions even push a car back to the center of its lane, when its driver might have wanted to stay towards one side of his lane (either to give room to a big car in the neighboring lane, or to avoid a bad pothole), sometimes making it MORE hazardous. I have a harder time trusting "AI" to drive safely than trusting humans to operate their own vehicles.

Is Israel Guilty of Genocide? 13 replies

Israel’s enemies are charging the world’s only Jewish nation with committing genocide. This is a lie. Genocide as a word and internationally accepted concept did not exist before 1944. It was specifically created to describe how the Nazis sought to eliminate the entirety of the Jewish population in Europe.(Snip) This narrow definition under international law consists of two principal prerequisites: intent and a specific group’s physical destruction. Currently, there are politically motivated and rhetorically irresponsible charges of genocide leveled at Israel. These disingenuous accusations are a weapon of war that terrorist groups such as Hamas are using to achieve strategic political victory in the struggle for universal information dominance.

The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern sounded an alarm recently. Its press release said, “The loss of local newspapers accelerated in 2023 to an average of 2.5 per week, leaving more than 200 counties as news deserts and meaning that more than half of all U.S. counties now have limited access to reliable local news and information, researchers at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University have found.” (Snip) It’s a crisis for democracy — not to mention journalism schools that rely on journalism students. Stanford University, its campus lined with redwoods and eucalyptus trees, has long been known as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. But in recent years, another ideological force has taken root: “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” a euphemism for left-wing racialism. DEI, in fact, has conquered Stanford. I have obtained exclusive analysis from inside Stanford outlining the incredible size and scope of the university’s DEI bureaucracy. According to this analysis, Stanford employs at least 177 full-time DEI bureaucrats, spread throughout the university’s various divisions and departments. Stanford’s DEI mandate is the same as those of other universities: advance the principles of left-wing racialism, hire faculty and admit students according to identity,

Walter’s new book “Arabella: The Dark Money Network of Leftist Billionaires Secretly Transforming America” shows that in the 2020 election cycle, Arabella Advisors’ nonprofits took in $2.4 billion. That’s $1 billion more than the combined fundraising of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee. That amount rose to $3 billion in the 2022 election cycle, Walter says. Moreover, he adds, nothing on the Right comes close

If the economy is so good, why do small business leaders feel so bad? Rainer Zitelmann's book, How Nations Escape Poverty, is particularly interesting for American veterans who served as G.I.s in Vietnam or for those who may have lost their fathers or family members in the conflict. The irony of history is that the communists initially won — however, upon establishing their socialist regime across Vietnam, they came to realize what a huge mistake they had made. Today, young Vietnamese in particular admire the USA and capitalism. (Snip) Zitelmann describes how Vietnam, the poorest country in the world in 1990, overcame poverty and became a prosperous country by abolishing the planned economy and introducing private property rights.

On Monday, I journeyed from Israel to Brussels for the two-day National Conservatism conference where I was due to speak this morning. I travelled from one war zone. I hadn’t expected to be entering another. National Conservatism, a movement underpinned by the thinking of the Israeli-American philosopher Yoram Hazony, promotes the nation state and the defence of its historic values against the nihilism of the post-moral, anti-western and anti-human ideologies that pass for much progressive thinking. This mainstream position is denounced as “far right” by left-wingers who use this smear to denounce anyone who dares oppose their agenda of destroying the western nation and its historic culture and values.

Elite higher education in America -- long unquestioned as globally preeminent -- is facing a perfect storm. Fewer applicants, higher costs, impoverished students, collapsing standards, and increasingly politicized and mediocre faculty reflect a collapse of the university system. The country is waking up to the reality that a bachelor's degree no longer equates with graduates being broadly educated and analytical. Just as often, they are stereotyped as pampered, largely ignorant, and gratuitously opinionated. No wonder polls show a drastic loss of public respect for higher education and, specifically, a growing lack of confidence in the professoriate.

As RedState covered earlier on Thursday, Biden said that Japan isn't accepting enough migrants to its country leading to an economic downturn. It's an odd statement to make, given Japan's status as an important ally: “One of the reasons why our economy’s growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants,” Biden said at a Washington fundraising event for his 2024 re-election campaign and marking the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
