In a sane world, this would be satire. Instead, Adam Rubenstein's lengthy essay at The Atlantic attempts to inject sanity into a journalism industry that has turned into a partisan cult.
And when we say cult, we mean it -- all the way to the finger-snapping struggle session Rubenstein, a former Opinion editor at the New York Times, experienced in his orientation meeting at the paper. Charles C.W. Cooke immediately grasped just how ridiculous this introduction to the Gray Lady turned out to be, and how revealing: Rubenstein's dilemma may provoke laughter, especially with the immediate and cultish response from his fellow new-hires, who sound as though they got

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) could be moving closer to endorsing former President Trump, a nod from an influential detractor that would serve as a powerful message for Trump.
Two sources familiar with the situation told The Hill that top lieutenants for the two GOP behemoths — Chris LaCivita, Trump’s campaign manager; and Josh Holmes, McConnell’s longtime top political hand — have held discussions in recent weeks about possibly thawing the freeze in their relationship and paving the way for McConnell to back Trump.
“We’ve reached the part of the primary where the party is coming together,” one source familiar with the discussions said.

Gemini, Google’s new artificial intelligence engine, has been widely mocked and exposed by conservatives and others on social media. To date, I haven’t noticed anyone serious on the Left interested in defending it.
Gemini has quite obviously been programmed by censorious and (at best) utterly incurious liberals. This is a great source of enjoyment and Twitter engagement for anyone willing to poke fun at the Left’s pieties, but it’s actually pretty educational too.
The real story here is not that Gemini is “biased,” so much as that Gemini lies to its users in a very specific way that will be familiar to many readers.

Manhattan prosecutors are asking the judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal case involving hush money payments to impose a gag order to stop the former president from publicly disparaging potential witnesses and others involved in the trial.
Trump’s comments have already resulted in hundreds of threats to the office, prosecutors said in a motion Monday.
“Defendant has a long history of making public and inflammatory remarks about the participants in various judicial proceedings against him, including jurors, witnesses, lawyers, and court staff,” the Manhattan district attorney’s office wrote. “Those remarks, as well as the inevitable reactions they incite from defendant’s followers and allies, pose a significant and imminent threat

Hungary on Monday voted to approve Sweden's NATO accession bid, ending months of diplomatic negotiations and finalizing Stockholm's membership almost two years after it first applied to join the military alliance.
Hungarian lawmakers voted in favor of Sweden's membership after overcoming long-standing opposition from governing party members led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The Scandinavian country will become the 32nd NATO member, coming under the fold of Article 5 of the treaty, which vows that an attack on one member is an attack on all of them.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the oldest Democrat-appointed justice on the court. It is starting to look like Democrats are ready to give her the heave-ho to give President Biden another shot at putting a Democrat on the Supreme Court.
It sounds like Democrats are none too confident that their guy Joe will win re-election in November. So, to head off another Trump nominee to the majority conservative court, Democrats hope that Sotomayor will take the hint and retire.
Will it happen? Nah. It's a lifetime appointment. Why should she give that up at the age of 69? She's young compared to other Democrats in top leadership positions

As I mentioned yesterday in my Sunday Smiles essay, I think the hilarious failures of Google's AI Gemini were one of the week's most important stories.
That may seem odd since the first impression that many people get is Gemini's odd preference for portraying Vikings as Blacks, Popes as minority females, and our Founding Fathers as minorities. What could be so important about that? Google will rework the algorithm and the problem will be fixed.
It likely already is. Sort of.
Gemini's ridiculous--I mean that literally, as it inspired an enormous amount of ridicule--photo generation bias isn't really important in and of itself. AI photos generated by Gemini

Businessman Joe Lonsdale said Saturday on CNN’s “Smerconish” that he believed there is “clearly weaponization” of the Justice Department against former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
Anchor Michael Smerconish said, “My next guest co-authored this Wall Street Journal op-ed with Jeb Bush under the heading, Elon Musk and Donald Trump Cases Imperil the Rule of Law.”
He asked, “I’m curious your co-author, Jeb Bush is no fan of Donald Trump. Why did he feel compelled to weigh in on this?”
Lonsdale said, “I’ve never given Donald Trump a cent either. I love America. I’ve been a lot of businesses in this country. I love building, love investing here.

A federal court has made a critical ruling related to the Second Amendment and the concept of self-defense. The decision strikes at the heart of California laws intended to limit one’s ability to protect themselves against violent criminals. Judge Roger Benitez handed down a ruling in the case of Fouts v. Bonta on Friday, striking down a ban on citizens possessing or carrying billy clubs and other forms of less lethal weaponry. In his decision, Benitez questioned the legality of the statute, which criminalized Californians simply for owning a billy club, a tool that is commonly used by members of law enforcement, but is also

Pima County, Arizona, and the city of Tucson are scrambling as Biden’s border crisis continues to wreak havoc on American border states.
Tucson officials are engaging in a frenzied search for a place to house illegal immigrants as federal funding comes to an end. And some are suggesting that the illegal border crossers should be bused to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in south Tucson.
Officials are desperately making plans ahead of the expected wave of illegal aliens likely to begin being dropped off at the end of March by Biden’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, according to AZMirror.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero has been “sounding the alarm” and said

To the chorus of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' raucous '80s pop hit, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley reached the podium on the 2024 Republican primary night in the state she calls home. The still-strong crowd of supporters began to chant her first name, to which Haley said with a note of affection on what must be a difficult night to remain upbeat, "Y'all are a rowdy bunch, but I love that about you." As we reported earlier, Haley lost the primary, in the state where she served as governor, to former President Donald Trump: Haley began her speech by thanking her family,

An Israeli delegation of top security officials returned from talks in Paris on Saturday as reports spread of growing hope in Jerusalem that a new hostage release deal with Hamas could be within reach.
Israel’s war cabinet was conferring by telephone on Saturday evening to discuss the emerging “outline of an agreement,” described by an Israeli official cited widely in media as a “basis on which to build a plan and the principles for negotiations.”
“There’s significant progress and a solid basis for discussions,” the official said. At the same time, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel that while there was optimism in Israeli media
