Outrage is brewing over the NFL’s decision to play what many refer to as “the black national anthem” at the start of this year’s Super Bowl game.
Called “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the song was originally written as a poem in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson, then the NAACP’s executive for 10 years, according to Today.
“The poem became a song when Johnson’s brother John Rosamond Johnson composed an instrumental arrangement for it. The song was first performed in 1900

I haven't seen a pro game in years, don't intend to restart now. That bridge is permanently burned.

The Lutheran Book of Worship has included "Lift Every Voice and Sing" as a patriotic hymn since I was a child in the '60s. Take note, the Lutherans are among America's whitest Christians, since most of their ancestors were from northern European countries. We sang it in whites-only public school in Georgia.
Take a look at the actual lyrics, including "...... true to our God, true to our native land." To regard this hymn as the "black national anthem" is to wickedly pervert its plain words.

A black national anthem implies the existence of a black nation, separate and apart from the United States. I don't think that is what a majority of black Americans really want.

Playing it now. It's horrible, as always. She is horrible.
I'd be embarrassed. Then again, I am capable of embarrassment.

I happened to catch a brief clip of the game. A black player was walking on the field in front of the stands yelling "F*** You" over and over. I'm assuming some white spectators must have been disrespecting the new anthem.

#9 saved me a lot of typing. I was a music director in a Lutheran church for many years.
It's a beautiful hymn, difficult to sing in its low notes. The "Black National Anthem" nickname was a nod to the black experience, but not a call for separatism.
The hymn has been co-opted and abused by political radicals. The subversion has been exploited by hucksters and tolerated by idiots.
I finally had to omit it from services because of the political rancor attached. Very sad.

If I could have afforded tickets to the Superbowl, I could have taken great pleasure in getting up as that song began, walking out and handing my tickets to the first few pan-handling derelicts standing near the entrance. On anthem for one nation. Get over it.

Must be a Bell Curve thing.
Let’s have a Civil Rights Movement to desegregate, then re-segregate.
