Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt has died by legal euthanasia, “hand in hand” with his wife Eugenie.
The couple, who were both 93, died Monday in his hometown of Nijmegen, The Rights Forum, a human rights organization Agt founded, announced Friday.
“He died together and hand in hand with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg, the support and support with whom he was together for more than seventy years, and whom he always continued to refer to as ‘my girl,'” the nonprofit said in a statement.
Both Agt and his wife had been suffering from deteriorating health

There is no dignity in that government-supported death. Let God pass you through the vale, not some bureaucrat in a white coat.

Reminded of the ending of Soylent Green where Edward G Robinson goes into the center and lies on the pallet with beautiful pictures of nature swirl around him...as he dies....

Sappy story but making the decision that is God's alone to make is not a smart thing to do.

On the other hand if one considers the cost of the state of keeping them alive and in not a good State either I don't think their decision was all that bad. Mind you I wouldn't do it, but it worked for them, and maybe God told them to do it -- that part you'll never know.

They made a mistake, but that's not for me to judge. God help them.

They are taking something they did not create and theirs's is not to destroy. The karma is hideous.

Where books are burned; people will be burned. Where government suicide is voluntary; it will become mandatory.

She decided to kill herself - - when the Dutch courts would not allow her to change her last name - - from Van Agt-Krekelberg to Streep.
93 years as Van Agt-Krekelberg was more than enough.

I realize that we live in a world that accepts this method of death, but I just cannot embrace it. Maybe if I was 91 and in deteriorating health, I would see it differently. I hope not.

I'm sorry but I must be blunt. These suicides are Madame Bovary. They fantasize of a romantic departure Of their own choosing, where they remain beautiful like still life, admired and envied by the lessers they leave behind in the mortal coil.
But the reality is far different.
Their last act on Earth actually is not to drink the poison but to soil themselves. Slacklawed, their bodies lay inert, now helpless to ensure dignity from anybody including their handlers who cared nothing for their lives still less for their lifeless forms.
And of course, all at once they realize they have not in fact ended their lives for they have no power to do so. They did not create themselves, they cannot end themselves. What will happen to our eternal souls when we discover that the only thing before us is The One Thing Necessary? And if somehow that "Thing," that Person, just has nothing that I want, where will we go? Where will we go when Heaven itself seems like suffering to us? So we then learn that we are powerless to end our own suffering as well.
We must never stop praying for these poor deluded souls.

#5~ “...maybe God told them to do it...” / Respectfully and emphatically disagree, but do understand compassion. Scripture is the inerrant Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). The Commandment, “Thou shalt not murder” means just that so it is not likely that God would tell anyone to murder one’s self or to murder others. Inerrant means authoritative, flawless, foolproof, infallible.
In Martin Luther’s “Large Catechism” his teaching on the Seventh Petition of “The Lord’s Prayer” explains praying for deliverance from evil. (Capitalization emphasis added.)
112] But deliver us from evil. Amen.
113] In the Greek text this petition reads thus: Deliver or preserve us from the Evil One, or the Malicious One; and it looks as if He were speaking of the devil, as though He would comprehend everything in one, so that the entire substance of all our prayer is directed against our chief enemy. For it is he who hinders among us everything that we pray for: the name or honor of God, God's kingdom and will, our daily bread, a cheerful good conscience, etc.
114] Therefore we finally sum it all up and say: Dear Father, pray, help that we be rid of all these calamities.
115] But there is nevertheless also included whatever evil may happen to us under the devil's kingdom-poverty, shame, death, and, in short, all the agonizing misery and heartache of which there is such an unnumbered multitude on the earth. For since THE DEVIL is not only a liar, but also a murderer, he CONSTANTLY SEEKS OUR LIFE, and wreaks his anger whenever he can afflict our bodies with misfortune and harm. Hence it comes that he often breaks men's necks or drives them to insanity, drowns some, AND INCITES MANY TO COMMIT SUICIDE, and to many other terrible calamities. 116] Therefore there is nothing for us to do upon earth but to pray against this arch-enemy without ceasing. For unless God preserved us, we would not be safe from him even for an hour.

#7~ “The karma is hideous.” / The fate of suicide victims is known only to God; it is God alone who knows “the spiritual condition of an individual upon death.” Whether God holds these people responsible or not is not known to mortal man. Although the Commandment “Thou shalt not murder” is clear, perhaps victims of suicide may be judged in a manner different than those who would willfully take the life or lives of others.

They "unalived" themselves and each other; that's like double murder.
