Executives with France-based Michelin announced that they will soon close a tire production plant in Ardmore, Oklahoma, laying off 1,400 American workers in the process. The decision comes as cheap foreign imported tires from low-wage countries flood the United States market.
On Thursday, Michelin executives said they would wind down production at the Ardmore plant. Supporting industries and local businesses are likely to take a hit as well.
The plant has produced passenger tires for more than five decades, dating back to 1970, and it is a vital employer for the community of about 25,000 residents — conveniently situated between Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Dallas, Texas.

This is a terrible blow for that area. My heart aches for them.

I don't have many consumer-related "absolutes" but one of them is that (for obvious reasons) I absolutely refuse to put tires made in China on any of my vehicles. No problem paying the extra money - it's a purchase made only once every 4 to 5 years.

Meanwhile union workers across the country continue to strike.
a total disconnect with reality.
Any monetary gains union workers obtain will be wiped out in increased product and service costs within a few years. The UAW demands are projected to raise the cost of a US built auto by $9,000. $10 hamburgers, $12 cheeseburgers coming soon! Do you want a french fry with that order?

That's sad. For most of my adult life, I have ridden on Michelins. And right now in my two seat Honda. Don't want any other brand of tire.

FTA: "North America’s passenger-vehicle market is changing rapidly and profoundly." Huh? EVs? Cars require tires. They have to be made somewhere by somebody. The tires you ride on have to be safe or you'd better become a hermit. Something similar happened in the USA. Carpets, clothing, etc. used to be made in the USA. But with labor costs they all went overseas. Appears the future America will only have jobs in education, food, law enforcement, government, etc. Anything that can be made overseas will be. As Ross Perot used to say that whisking sound you hear is your job going overseas.

With Trump we'd have tariffs on those Chinese and Korean tires. And with some brains, people here wouldn't buy them.

its stupid to close a US plant now. The cheap tires from overseas will stop coming here soon according to Peter Zeihan

When you see an RV on the side of the road with a flat tire, it most likely has China Bombs on it. That's what they are called in the RV community. I will only run Goodyear Endurance on my RV.

Well, that's the UniParty (both Rs and Ds) NOT putting America first. What other country in the world purposefully sets out to destroy its own economy? Certainly not China, India, etc.

When plants like this close in California, Democrat staffers in the capitol building clap, cheer and give high-fives. I don't think that will be the reaction in Oklahoma when Michelin is shuttered.

It isn't like there is not demand for tires, The employees should band together and make the plant employee owned.

I'd bet Ardmore doesn't have many employers. As for foreign competition, see haw many tires are being purchased that are made in China or Vietnam. You put your family's life on those?

That location started as the "Uni-Royal Plant" for many decades, until Bridgestone bought them out, and then years later when finally Michelin bought them. Publicly traded American Corporations are the problem here. Executives of such companies get MASSIVE Bonuses when they sell they convince the Board of Directors and shareholders to sell out to a competitor, and all the while we see healthy, "All American" competition in this country shrink, until only foreign corporations are willing to buy them out. This cycle even happens to corporations vital to our national defense, as we allow corporations within "allied" nations to buy up such companies and thereby gain our Intellectual Property and markets, while also subjugating our foreign policy to their national whims. Only Congress can stop this salvage yard mentality by ending this practice of payouts for sellouts and endeavor to Make America Great Again!

We also will not put China-made tires on any vehicle. We have been Michelin customers for many years. I hate to see this happen!

This is very ominous, if you can’t make tires competitively in Oklahoma, it’s unlikely you can elsewhere.

Michelin makes great tires and have a well-deserved reputation. They are not inexpensive although they are reliable.
Sad for those families affected because of cheap tires and who are victims of Bidenflation-- my heart and prayers go out to them.
