Comedian and HBO late-night host Bill Maher said that the ongoing WGA strike came at the “wrong time,” adding that the Hollywood writers have “no leverage.”
Speaking with fellow comedian Jim Gaffigan on the Club Random podcast, Maher, whose own show Real Time on HBO was shut down due to the strike, felt that the writers had some “kooky” requests.
“They’re asking for a lot of things that are, like, kooky,” Maher said. “What I find objectionable about the philosophy of the strike [is] it seems to be, they have really morphed a long way from 2007’s strike, where they kind of believe that you’re owed

It's gig work, but a lot of union friendly working people are put off by search engine results for wga pay.

Amazing. A nutball leftist thinking like a free marketeer?

These writers are not "owed" any wage. They earn what the market will pay for their particular skills. If they are unhappy with their pay, the most expedient solution would be to find another line of work, which is true for most of us in non-union, private-sector jobs.

IF they want to make big money writing, write something worth paying big money for. Otherwise, you earn what you are worth. Actors who haul in the big bucks make more. Same with the writers. A one size fits all contract will not and should not work for creative type jobs. If you write a flop, you earn nothing. Its that simple. The same goes for actors, sports, and just about any other job. Produce good stuff and the market should pay you what you are worth.

One of their demands is "Writers Room" minimum staffing...drawn from the union rolls, not from individual hires by the shows. A friend working on one of TV's TOP shows, claims they demanded the show have FORTY writers in the room...for a show that is entirely written already by the producer/director. He also has at least 4 other streaming shows where he is the ONLY actual writer.
There is an old joke about a "Camel is just a horse...designed by a Committee", many TV shows and movies have gotten AWFUL...because they are written by committees, rather than individuals, or small teams with a vision to share.
My sister is an actress, had a co-starring role in a multiple Oscar winning film, is married to a guy with screenwriting credits in three academy award winning films.
I used to be a speech writer, for politicians, part of a "Team", now and then I might get a sentence, or a phrase, included in something(one in particular in a Presidential Debate)...I NEVER expected to have that provide $100k/annum which is approx a "Living Wage: in Calif. certainly not for EVERYONE on that team.

Hollywood is among the chief tools of propaganda for Leftist dogma; they shouldn't be at all surprised to find their own employees embracing the living-wage scam.

#7 - Thank you for your spot-on reality check about professional writing that once was understood by every aspiring writer when they first picked up a pen. Writers, artists, musicians, actors or anyone with talent in the creative arts needs to realize the cold hard facts of life that only a fraction of one percent of any of them will make the "big money". If providence shines upon them they may be able to make a comfortable living with their craft, or have a lucrative side deal. I've been able to sell a few articles to "real" publications, and self-published a book. I feed my writers' jones here on Ldot.
The great disservice the Commies have done to society is the belief that everyone can be the CEO. That everyone deserves the million dollar salary, the mansion on the hill, the Oscar Award for Best Writer for a Movie Featuring a Black Latino Trans Lesbian Gay Furry. Talent matters, but what matters most is people realizing their purpose in life designed for them by their Creator. Their special combination of talents, abilities and sensibilities only belong to them; and were given to them for specific purposes. It is the duty of each person to find those purposes and fulfill them. Reaching for dreams that are outside of those realities only cause heartbreak and frustration. The Commies know this and use this dysfunction as their fulcrum to destabilize society. Hollywood is their petri dish.

Bill, none of us in the real world really care about the writers or their strikes. There's just too many choices now with streaming services. Writers can strike for a few years and we'd still never run out of stuff to watch.

People don't watch TV the same any longer, with very few watching "live". Most people I know tape the shows and watch later.
Rarely are there any shows that capture a large viewing audience where they're talking about it the next day or week afterwards.
Just finished watching "House of Dragons" over the past weekend. Never felt a rush to watch any sooner but enjoyed it very much.
