Tony Bennett, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in the history of American popular music, died Friday at 96, less than two weeks shy of his birthday, his publicist said in a statement. Bennett died in his hometown of New York, Sylvia Weiner said. A cause was not immediately disclosed. Bennett provided the soundtrack for generations of romantic evenings and proved that his timeless brand of standards could have broad, consistent appeal as the music industry shifted with the rise of rock and rap.

I saw Tony Bennett in concert in 2001, at Fiddler’s Green outside of Denver. Diana Krall opened for him. From the moment he took the stage, he was a master showman. About two-thirds of the way through his act, he brought Diana Krall back out; she played the piano while they sang duets. It was a night I’ll never forget. RIP, Tony. You were a hell of a guy.

God bless Tony Bennett. He was one of the greatest singing voices of our time. I remember in the 'Seventies when he cut an album with jazz piano legend Bill Evans, he did the artwork on the cover of the album, and signed the art "Anthony Benedetto." Somewhere I read that Tony Bennett was left of center politically. He was, but I don't remember him being strident about it. What was important about him was that he was a great singer and a nice human being. That's a good way to be.

The most thrilling thing I have ever seen in show business was, sitting in the top balcony at Radio City Music Hall, Tony turned the mic off, and just with his guitarist, sang “Fly Me To The Moon..” Rest easy, Sir, and thank you…

God rest his soul. Tony Bennett was a giant — with a remarkable talent, smooth voice and great style that was timeless. There's a reason they're called "standards:" appealing and meaningful songs that will always be celebrated and remembered when interpreted and performed by absolute masters of their craft. I will be spending the rest of the day with Tony Bennett, along with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Requiescat in pace, old friend.

I thought I had read he retired because he contracted Alzheimer's? Could be wrong, but he admitted in an interview shortly before his retirement he was having some pretty serious memory issues while on stage. As I also recall, he got a serious resurgence in his career because he appeared on MTV: Unplugged and after that the younger crowd could not get enough of his jazz style. RIP Mr. Bennett your body may be silent but your voice will live as long as there is music.

He was the last of them. The great singers of the Great American Songbook are all gone now. Hazy's already mentioned the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album -- two musical master craftsman bringing songs to life. I owned it on CD in the '80s. I recently bought it again in digital form, hoping to hear it one more time before Mr. Bennett left us. He left us so much.

The Biden administration was dealt a major blow in its efforts to control the ongoing border crisis on Tuesday when a federal judge blocked a rule introduced in May that makes migrants ineligible for asylum if they have entered illegally and failed to take advantage of expanded lawful pathways set up by the federal government. Judge Jon Tigar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California blocked the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule in response to a lawsuit from a coalition of left-wing immigration groups, which claimed the rule was similar to a Trump-era transit ban that was similarly blocked. He found the rule is "both

While appearing on Fox News, McCarthy laid out the case that Joe Biden accepted bribes and funneled money through a variety of shell companies. He then said at the end of the segment with Sean Hannity that “this is rising to the level of an impeachment inquiry.” MCCARTHY: We would know none of this if Republicans had not taken the majority. We have only followed where the information has taken us, but this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power

Am I insane to think that one of the key foundations of any civilization is the ability to communicate clearly? A shared language and history matter. Politics, science, economics, family life, education…they all rest on our ability to find common ground in communication. Without language, all we can do is point and grunt. Precision in language is especially important in things like science and law. And the current assault on our language is particularly troubling and acute in both these areas. What you can say and how you can say things are being circumscribed, and the very meaning of terms we all used to understand are being altered beyond recognition.
