Tony Bennett, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in the history of American popular music, died Friday at 96, less than two weeks shy of his birthday, his publicist said in a statement. Bennett died in his hometown of New York, Sylvia Weiner said. A cause was not immediately disclosed. Bennett provided the soundtrack for generations of romantic evenings and proved that his timeless brand of standards could have broad, consistent appeal as the music industry shifted with the rise of rock and rap.

Am I insane to think that one of the key foundations of any civilization is the ability to communicate clearly? A shared language and history matter.
Politics, science, economics, family life, education…they all rest on our ability to find common ground in communication. Without language, all we can do is point and grunt.
Precision in language is especially important in things like science and law. And the current assault on our language is particularly troubling and acute in both these areas. What you can say and how you can say things are being circumscribed, and the very meaning of terms we all used to understand are being altered beyond recognition.

Texas officials have seized more than 422 million lethal doses of fentanyl since the launch of the state’s Operation Lone Star program in March 2021, governor Greg Abbott announced on Friday.
