MINNEAPOLIS -- Bud Grant, the stoic and demanding Hall of Fame coach who took the Minnesota Vikings and their mighty Purple People Eaters defense to four Super Bowls in eight years and lost all of them, died Saturday. He was 95. The Vikings announced Grant's death on social media. (Snip) Wearing his trademark purple Vikings cap and a stone-faced demeanor, Grant’s steely sideline gaze became synonymous with his teams. This time comes for all of us. It is, nevertheless, sad to see the good ones pass away. Bud Grant was indeed one of the good ones. He was from an era when I still enjoyed watching football and cheering on the teams and sports. I miss those days.

A couple of interesting takeaways from this: 1) A 3-sport letterman in high school who overcame polio as a child, then a 3-sport letterman at Minnesota, played 2 years in the NBA, and THEN played in the NFL and CFL before moving to coaching. You would never have guessed it by watching his mannerisms on the Vikings sideline but the guy was a stud! And 2) This, before he attended college: ...after enlisting in 1945, and played on a team at the Great Lakes naval station outside Chicago run by Paul Brown... What a different world it was back then.

Coach Grant was asked how he could keep his cool when his team had the ball with a third down and long play, down by 6 with less than a minute to play. He replied, “ I never make a decision until I have to.” RIP, Coach and thank you.

I rermember watching a game on TV played at Minnesota on a day when the temp. was below freezing and the wind chill was down near zero. At one point they showed the sidelines and the visiting team was set up with large heaters blowind warm air along the benches. Then they showed the Viking sideline and there were no heaters in sight. The announcer pointed out that Grant didn't believe in coddling his team and then showed a shot of coach standing on the sidlines stoically watching the game. As I recall the Vikings won.

A pair of climate activists in Scotland will face trial after allegedly vandalizing a display case holding national hero William Wallace’s broadsword. "The police say the accused believe they were raising awareness of climate change and that their actions were necessary for the cause," prosecutor Eilidh Smith said. Alexander Cloudley, 29 and Katrielle Chan, 21, both from Glasgow, pleaded not guilty to vandalism in Stirling Sheriff Court last week. They allegedly damaged and spray-painted the case holding Wallace of "Braveheart" fame’s sword. They each face a single charge alleging that, on March 2, they entered the National Wallace Monument and

Elizabeth Warren has called twice to apologize. Over a month later, Kamala Harris hasn’t called back. In a local Boston radio interview in late January, Warren was enthusiastic about President Joe Biden running for reelection but, asked if Biden should keep Harris as his running mate, she said, “I really want to defer to what makes Biden comfortable on his team.” (Snip) But the Warren moment is infuriating many in Harris’s circle: To them, it’s the latest in a long string of snubs to a vice president whom they say has never gotten the respect or support she deserves.CORRECTION*

President Biden unveiled his proposed budget for fiscal year 2024 on Thursday, which in part took aim at billions of dollars of tax subsidies the White House said benefit the fossil fuel industry. According to the White House, the proposed budget would strip $31 billion worth of "special tax treatment" for oil and gas company investments in addition to other fossil fuel tax preferences. The release further criticized oil companies for raking in record profits last year and for failing to invest in greater energy production. I love a good conspiracy theory. (Snip) Michelle Obama hates politics, hates voters, and hates Washington D.C., and not necessarily in that order. She emerged from her privileged Martha’s Vineyard cocoon recently to recount in a podcast (about herself, naturally) that she cried uncontrollably for a half an hour on Air Force One when she left Washington, D.C., after Donald Trump’s inauguration. “Just straight, uncontrollable sobbing” from “holding it together for eight years” under the enormous, horrible, crushing burden of being the First Lady of the United States. Smalls was born a slave and went on to become a mariner, a businessman, a publisher and a congressman who represented South Carolina, the state where he was born. Bradley started a pediatric gender clinic in 1975 aimed at treating children with gender dysphoria — a deep sense of discomfort with one’s body and biological sex — in which she offered a therapy-focused approach; most patients outgrew their feelings of being transgender over time, she told the DCNF.
