The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) proposed a new rule this week that would crack down on taxing the service industry's tips.
The Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) proposal would be a voluntary program between the IRS and employers that the IRS says would 'decrease taxpayer and IRS administrative burdens and provide more transparency and certainty to taxpayers.'
The proposal is now open to public comment until May 7.
The program would monitor employer compliance based on actual annual tip revenue and charge tip data from an employer's point-of-sale

A nightmare for the employers in an additional cost which of course will be passed on to the consumer. Remember…businesses DO NOT pay taxes, they collect them. The costs of running a business are a part of the price of their product or service.

Tip of the iceberg...no pun intended. They are going after the gig economy. Your Hispanic lawn guy, your handyman who works for himself. Your barber you pay in cash. The guy you pay to clean your gutters or anybody working for himself and self reporting his income if he even files a tax return. I am not defending these tax dodgers but it’s why I support a sales tax and no income tax. You get everybody that way. The drug dealer buying a Cadillac Escalade and anybody who buys anything. The problem is that the Dems might want that but keep the income tax. A 20% sales tax will soon be 25%, then 30% etc, etc.

Are they going to tax Hunters' hookers and drug dealers? My favorite advice on tiping is from Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies when someone ask him for a tip: Plant corn early in the spring.

I suspect the majority of tips are now paid along with the primary bill and by credit card. How hard can it be to track that tip income? Does it really require 80,000+ additional IRS employees?

so, does that mean that everyone who leaves a tip for a waitress has to declare it in their taxes, including the waitress' name and establishment name and location and amount of tip and date and time and what they ordered , etc, etc?

Guess Biden thinks waitresses and bartenders make over $400,000 per year. Didn't he claim only people making that much would be targeted for tax increases? Remember, if a Democrat's lips are moving, they are lying.

It's a disgrace. In NYS, if a waiter/waitress is audited, the audit ASSUMES he/she makes an 'average' amount of tips based on hours worked. That is a major SCAM.
Each person does not make an 'average'. It depends where they work, when they work, (time of day, days or nights, season, etc.), and if they asked to do other jobs as well as wait on customers ( bus the tables, help in the kitchen, and so forth ). These are facts.

Biden you cheater, you should really back off from this one lest you go to a local cafe and tee off a server working her fanny off who may then feel compelled to put copious quantities of Ex-Lax on your hamburger. And oh yes, bring an extra diaper with you, pal. You will need it.

I heard the black guy on Fox Business channel say there isn't a tax in your life that isn't going to go up this year. I remember paying my personal property tax on my 2 year old car for 2022. It went from $540 in 2021 to $800 in 2022. I shudder to think what it will be with the Moron trying to get in my knickers.

One more reason the fascist Democrats want digital currency for us but not for the illegals and underground contraband economy. The laws were already passed for Treasury to force credit card only payment but it is tough to enforce since in the world there are trillions in paper USD stuffed in mattresses in economically volatile countries as a more stable currency. Lose the paper and how do these people cash in?

I've never worked in the food and drink industry but I was under the belief that the IRS automatically demands 15% of the wages of these people, forcing them to file, even if it's cash. Can anybody confirm? The strategy is to go after the low wage earners because they can't afford lawyers or tax accountants.

@23, when we owned a restaurant, we had to collect taxes based on the hours worked at actual minimum wage which was higher than the required wage to pay tipped employees. Often times, their actual net pay would equate to about $1-2 per hour after taxes, so it was obviously all about the cash for the good ones. The onus was on the employee to declare tips that exceeded that amount but in 35 years in the service industry I never heard from a bartender or server that the IRS ever pressed the matter.

Not a chance that tips will be reported accurately.
And Sandy O would still be stealing the tip jar, and not reporting it.

Sounds to me the government Dems are desperate for more money and they don't care where they get it...waitresses and bartenders are to be harassed by irs agents with guns...and Pocahontas looks the other way because she's been screaming about the rich having to pay their fair share...while she flies in a private jet to her many homes...I wonder what constitutes rich in her eyes...a waitress making below minimum wages and supported by their tips....this is her definition of "rich"???

I no longer tip via credit card...once a couple years ago, I did that and noticed on my statement there was no charge for that tip. Ended up contacting the restaurant and getting it straightened out...my thoughts are no one needs to know who got what tip...so from then on, it's always been cash under the plate....and screw the IRS...

Outlaw tipping, and have the service industry starting pay at minimum wage of 7.25 instead of $2.13. Otherwise, leave these wage earners alone, and just get the VAT going, and do away with income tax.

#25, I agree with you on the VAT but I’ll tell you what happens when servers are paid minimum wage…in Australia, you don’t generally tip because the server is paid a minimum of $25 per hour. Your “tip” is figured into the cost of the food and the prices are ridiculous. On a visit there in 2014, I ordered fish and chips which in the US would have cost around $18. The price there was $35.

I know several people who work as servers. I can tell you that big repeat customers who tip well get the best service. Fair or not, outlawing tipping only leads to poorer service.

Baristas, waitresses and the such tend to vote for bennies given by the government.
They voted for this. Because it is more important to be able to murder your baby than to elect responsible government.
That said, this is possibly the first thing Xiden has proposed that I could support.

Given that most tips come in the form of cash, I don't see how they can monitor that without some pretty severe intrusion on the employer. They won't be satisfied with just the card style payment for long.
