Wildfires in Hawaii − fueled in part by strong winds from a passing hurricane − have forced hundreds of evacuations, caused thousands to lose power, destroyed homes and even sent some residents fleeing into the ocean to escape the flames.
County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin told USA TODAY on Wednesday that the fires are affecting three areas of the island: Lahaina, a residential and tourist area with a commercial district in West Maui; Kula, a residential area in the inland, mountainous Upcountry region; and Kihei, home to a mix of residential homes, condominiums, short-term vacation rentals and visitor facilities in South Maui.

Michael Polanyi was born at a particularly inauspicious place and time: in Budapest, Hungary, in March of 1891, just as central Europe was heading toward two devastating world wars, economic collapse, and a half-century of communist totalitarianism. On top of this, Polanyi was a Jew who most certainly would have been killed had he not fled to England in 1933.

A special prosecutor found that the FBI rushed into its investigation of ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and relied too much on raw and unconfirmed intelligence as he concluded a four-year probe that fell far short of the former president’s prediction that the “crime of the century” would be uncovered.
[Snip] Instead, Durham’s investigation delivered underwhelming results, with prosecutors securing a guilty plea from a little-known FBI employee but losing the only two criminal cases they took to trial.

It could be a colorful night sky for more than half of millions of people in the northern U.S. as the aurora borealis, or northern lights, could make an appearance in more than half of the country.
The possibility of seeing the dazzling display comes after the sun had a solar flare erupt on Friday that was directed toward Earth, according to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. As a result, 30 states will have the chance to see the the aurora borealis, stretching from Washington to Maine, and as far south as Kansas, the Space Weather Prediction Center says, as long as weather conditions permit.

Casting aside the "norms" that the Left loudly pined for just a few short years ago, far-Left Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg compelled the former president to appear in a Manhattan court to enter a plea in response to an indictment containing 34 counts of "falsifying business records," which is normally a minor misdemeanor charge. [SNIP] For the American experiment to continue in any form that wouldn't violently sicken our nation's Founders if they were still alive today, those of us in America that aren't batshit crazy need to establish a New Normal where the out-of-control craziness is stopped in its tracks by an even more determined opposing force...

As of Tuesday, a powdered form of Acheta domesticus — better known as the house cricket — will be given the green light for human consumption within the European Union, documents from the body have confirmed. This is soon to be followed by further approval for the sale and consumption of the larval form of Alphitobius diaperionus — also known as the lesser mealworm — which will be given the green light for human consumption in frozen, paste, dried and powder forms within the European Union later this week. The new insect-based products for human consumption represent the latest push by the European Union...

The Biden administration on Thursday announced that it would complete a 20-year withdrawal of 225,504 acres in a northern Minnesota forest area that is home to some of the largest domestic critical mineral reserves.
The action announced by the Department of the Interior (DOI) effectively prohibits mining activity from taking place in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Duluth, Minnesota, and surrounding area for the next two decades. The agency said it took the action in an effort to protect the local environment and watershed, which environmentalists worried would be contaminated by mining activity.

The mother of Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt has been arrested for blocking traffic during a memorial for her daughter in Washington DC.
Video footage shows Micki Witthoeft, 58, being arrested by police on Friday as a group of demonstrators allegedly illegally blocked the road.
Babbitt, 35, was the only person killed during the rioting when an officer opened fire at a Make America Great Again mob as they stormed through the Rotunda.
Bystanders who watched her mom being arrested slammed cops claiming they 'murdered' her daughter.

To fight pornography in the schools, a Texas housewife recently appeared at a school board meeting. She lectured the officials: "I do not want my children to learn about anal sex in middle school. ... I want you to start focusing on education, not public health."
Education, as we'll see, is the first refuge of scoundrels. Do you imagine that this school board is hip and cutting-edge? In fact, liberals have had few new ideas in more than a century. During World War 1, the communist government of Hungary "imposed a system of pornographic sex education on Hungarian school pupils." Ever since, ...

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to live under communism? Well, now you know. The last two years have seen a parade of dumb and dumber policies, the kind you expect in totalitarian dictatorships. The distinguishing traits are as follows: rulers show contempt for their serfs; policy wonks concoct endless stream of counterproductive ideas; and casual cruelty hurts everyone, day after day. Here are a dozen examples.

The House Republican conference elected Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Wednesday to serve as their majority leader when the next session of Congress begins in January.
Scalise was uncontested for the position, and the move would keep him as the No. 2 to current Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), assuming he becomes speaker of the House. McCarthy is facing a challenge from the more conservative wing of the GOP.

Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert is in one of the tightest races of the mid-term elections against Democrat challenger Adam Frisch to re-secure her seat in the US House, with only 60 votes separating them as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The outspoken freshman lawmaker was trailing with 154,060 votes to Frisch’s 154,122 after 95% of expected ballots had been counted.
Frisch, who called himself a “conservative businessman” in a late-October news release aimed at securing Republican support in the red-leaning district, held just 0.02% more votes than Boebert.
