Jeff Beck, the celebrated guitarist who played with the Yardbirds and led the Jeff Beck Group, has died aged 78, his representative has confirmed. Beck died on Tuesday after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis”, the representative confirmed. “His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss,” they added. Often described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck – whose fingers and thumbs were famously insured for £7m – was known as a keen innovator. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimented with fuzz and distortion effects and paved the way for heavier subgenres such as psych rock and heavy metal over the course of his career.

Comments:

Truly one of the all time great guitarists, Jeff Beck was in a category of three (Yardbirds guitarists), but as a player he was in a category of one. Rest in peace, Jeff.

From Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London, here is Jeff and his band playing "Cause We've Ended as Lovers." Exquisite. Jeff played no wrong notes. And listen to the rest of his band! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw8fBR_XiPs

We think alike. I posted a link to the entire set at Ronnie Scott's on another website last night. From a YouTube commenter on the Ronnie Scott link - He's blues, but not blues. He's rock, but not rock. He's fusion, but not fusion. He's Beck. youtube.com/watch?v=0FSImaBHQ1k

So sorry to hear of his passing. Whoever wrote this story is in error about the fuzz/distortionorigin. The Rolling Stones Satisfaction started that with a device called the Fuzz Tone. How do I know this obscure fact...I purchased the first Fuzz Tone sold in Texas, it came from Caldwell Music (long out of business) in downtown San Antonio, Tx. I paid $38 for it in 1965. I also got my candy red Fender Stratocaster for $303. and change.

"Surprised by the suddenness". Perhaps, but after all at 78 for a rock artist that's a pretty good long life. I hope to reach 78 and will be pleasantly surprised if I do.

Re #1, Tal Wilkenfeld was equally amazing on the bass guitar in that video. Beck got sounds from that guitar that you have trouble imagining that a stringed instrument can make. A real talent has been lost.

Re #8: Tal's bass solo in the song knocked me out--it knocked Jeff out, too--and he was most effusive in his praise. Her inventiveness on the electric bass reminded me of the late Scott LaFaro's* style on his acoustic double bass. She (Tal) shows world class talent on bass. There are few things more uplifting than being a real musician in the presence of a better musician. That's the best opportunity to become a better player. *LaFaro was bassist in the Bill Evans Trio from 1959-1961. He tragically died in an early morning car accident in upstate New York ten days after the Trio's acclaimed Village Vanguard recordings.

I started playing guitar because of Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds before I knew who Eric Clapton was. I learned the history of the band finally realizing three of the most famous guitarists came from the Yardbirds. Before I knew of Rod Stewart it was Jeff Beck who introduced him to us on his Truth album. I would follow him and still do. Rest In Peace to a great guitarist God will be entertained.

I'll leave it to OP to write the words I cannot find for the tremendous Jeff Back. He was my all time favorite guitarist and a genuinely humble man. Those feelings he evoked with his beautiful style are now felt entirely for him. I've been hurting all day. A true Master.

Re #6: The Yardbirds' "Heart Full of Soul" was recorded 20 April 1965, four weeks before "Satisfaction." Jeff Beck was the first guitarist to use the fuzz box in a recording. Incidentally, Jeff borrowed the fuzz box from his friend Jimmy Page, a session musician until joining the Yardbirds in 1966. Beck and Page maintained a close friendship through the years. They had such respect for each other.

After several months of contentious debate and pressure from Muslim residents, Hamtramck City Council voted Tuesday night to allow the religious sacrifice of animals on residential property. Muslims often slaughter animals during the holiday of Eid al-Adha and Hamtramck has one of the highest percentage of Muslim residents among cities in the U.S. The all-Muslim city council voted 3-2, with Mayor Amer Ghalib casting an additional vote in favor making it 4-2, to amend a city ordinance to allow religious sacrifice of animals at home. After the vote to approve, applause broke out from members of the public, who packed the meeting to speak out before the vote.

Individual data ownership is a major, underappreciated issue in the 21st century. The question of which of the bits we generate in copious quantity is protected is unclear but potentially important, probably far more so than “climate change.” Although there may be debate over where a complex system like the planetary climate will be in fifty years’ time, there is little doubt that the public’s custody over its own information will slip away unless something drastically changes right away. "Perhaps the Fifth Amendment’s most famous protection is the right against self-incrimination. As it reads, no person “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a

The Biden Administration has beat a hasty retreat from the trial balloon of banning natural gas stoves and other appliances, but this is likely only because they got caught before the bureaucratic rule-making machinery of the administrative state could make it fait accompli and provide cover for Democratic politicians. You know in your bones the authoritarian climatistas are determined to ban all natural gas use that they can. As Jim Geraghty pointed out at National Review, “When a member of a federal commission says ‘any option is on the table’ and ‘products that can’t be made safe can be banned,’ you cannot say that ‘fears of a ban are unfounded.'”

We’re assured that the person hired to be special counsel in the Joe Biden classified document scandal, Robert Hur, “has a great record. He is a superb lawyer.” He was a pivotal right-hand man in a high governmental office. He “has a long and distinguished career as a federal prosecutor.” And was a key person dealing with a very special, special counsel. That guy sounds like a total legal dreamboat. Except that those accolades were spoken by none other than disgraced former-deputy attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who conspired with the fellow disgracee Andrew McCabe to wear a wire to catch Donald Trump in a 25th Amendment-worthy meltdown

While the media has us focused on the “knife violence” miscreant in Utah and the circus clowns in D.C., “gun enthusiasts” have been blazing up our streets in 15 states and our nation’s capital. Let’s take a look at the bumper crop of mass shootings we’ve had thus far in 2023. DEFINITION-O-RAMA! I am going with the traditional definition of a mass shooting: four or more people shot — not including the shooter — in a fluid situation. Meaning, if a clown shoots three people in a Denny’s, takes a nap, watches an episode of “Forensic Files,” and then perforates four more at a Piggly Wiggly, this is not a mass shooting.

Revelations that classified documents going back to President Joe Biden’s years as vice president have been found in his private office in Washington and a garage at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, are threatening to become a political – and possible legal – liability for the president. Biden said he was “surprised” to learn of the discovery of the records. He had branded his predecessor, Donald Trump, as "irresponsible" for storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. But Biden’s own handling of classified materials is now under scrutiny given the revelations that documents were stored at his private office and garage.
