In the midst of the battle over Kevin McCarthy becoming Speaker of the House, Rep. Mike Rogers set newsrooms ablaze by “lunging” at Rep. Matt Gaetz. At the time, Gaetz and others had just finished securing major concessions from McCarthy, and one ballot later, the deal would finally be sealed. On the prior ballot, though, Rogers, who is set to chair the Armed Services Committee, was apparently angered by Gaetz voting present and chose to lash out. Because Gaetz was on the receiving end of the rage, the press largely took Rogers’ side, exuding a “serves him right” attitude about the ordeal. That’s not a shock given the press

Washington - The White House is moving forward with a proposal that would lower student debt payments for millions of Americans now and in the future, offering a new route to repay federal loans under far more generous terms.
President Joe Biden announced the repayment plan in August, but it was overshadowed by his sweeping plan to slash or eliminate student debt for 40 million Americans. Despite the low profile of the payment plan, however, some education experts see it as a more powerful tool to make college affordable, especially for those with lower incomes.
Education Department officials on Tuesday called the new plan a “student loan safety net”
In his first major scheduled vote since becoming Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy has gotten a major rules package through the chamber with only one dissent in the ranks. The comprehensive set of rules puts restrictions on how funding bills can be voted on, and puts restrictions on rushing legislation through the House. The final vote was 220-213, with Texas Republican, Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, being the lone Republican to vote against it.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is set to open public comment on the dangers of gas stoves sometime this winter. The commission could set standards on emissions from the gas stoves, or even look to ban the manufacture or import of the appliances, commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. told Bloomberg News.
“This is a hidden hazard,” Trumka told the outlet. “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”
