The police department in one of America’s fastest-growing cities is facing staff shortages so severe that it will not respond to certain 911 calls, including complaints of burglaries, theft, property damage, identity theft, or trespassing. The Asheville, North Carolina Police Department said that it has lost 84 officers since January 1, 2020.APD Police Chief David Zack says the attrition rate, which has accelerated since protests against law enforcement became widespread in the wake of George Floyd’s death in May of last year, has reached crisis proportions. He said it is necessary to no longer respond in-person to low-level offenses

Reminds me of the man who called 911 to report someone was breaking into his backyard shed. The operator said they were short staffed and it would take 30 minutes for cops to get there. A few minutes later the men called back and said there was no need to send the cops because he had shot the burglar. The cops were there in 3 minutes.

Yes, what if they called 911 and nobody came?
Liberals, what if YOU called 911 and nobody came?
Do liberals have any idea what physical reality is? Existence where YOUR strength rules or is dominated?

Why not just not go out for Democrat calls? They are who are causing these resignations.

I don't think a Police Chief should announce they are not going to respond to certain crimes, and alert the criminals they have a free hand. Why not just keep the mouth shut on that?

It will soon be an insurance problem. That cops are unable to reliably respond sends a signal (a dog whistle) that no one is protecting the vulnerable. There are those who salivate at the opportunities.

Call on volunteers to patrol the streets 24/7, open up any police, national guard, army and marine reserve arsenals and start handing out real assault rifles - not the semi auto, AR types - the ones that start with an "M". Throw in a handgun to carry everywhere as well.

The police needed to send this message to residents. They are tacitly saying that residents will need to take matters into their own hands. If someone shoots a burglar or trespasser, the resident has evidence that the police won't respond. Asheville residents, make sure you print out the police department's statement.

This is all part of a greater effort by the left to nationalize the police forces across America. Drive the local cops away and make the job so bad that no one will take it, then the feds swoop in and take everything over. More control over the citizenry by thugs like the FBI and ATF who aren't local, so they couldn't care less about any abuses against people.
Think it can't happen? Look at how they treated 'rioters' from Jan. 6. People held practically incommunicado in DC jail with no charges or representation for nothing but simple trespassing (if even that).

Ask yourselves this question - What young adult with any functioning brain cells will apply at a police department anywhere today? experienced officers/detectives will lateral or retire and go to departments in red areas and hope they don't turn blue over time. A 20 to 30 year old with some sense of self preservation should think long and hard before pinning on a badge, it takes about five years to become a journeyman cop, it's pretty easy to overreact during that period and even if you don't if every manager, politician and yahoo with a cell phone is gunning for you. You couldn't pay me enough for that job today.

This is a "police reform" theory called YOYO
You're On Your Own.
Just keep the tax money coming in. We need it for "community outreach".

Where I live in Dekalb County, GA, the police don't respond to car break ins. It's a misdemeanor, the people who do it are juveniles who can't be charged as adults, and there's way too many of them. The gendarmes just mail you a form you can submit to your insurance company. And you can imagine what will happen to your insurance rates if you make a claim. So the best thing to do is to drive a 73 Ford Pinto and not worry about it.

Grew up in a community with no police. Anyone with resources left. All that remained were the poor. The revenue base was gone. This little town had the third highest crime rate in the entire county. Doubt it has changed much since I left. The criminal element of society learns where the police are not, and that's where they conduct 'business'.
This will be the future for Ashville. Good luck, Ashville, you will need it.

As #12 notes, the lovely city of Asheville has been infected with liberals and social justice zealots for a while.
They recently took down a 75-ft statue of Zebulon Vance, which had stood in the middle of the city for over 120 years. And last year, they voted to authorize "community reparations" for blacks, one of the first cities to take such a step.
It's not surprising that the police have been treated badly and many have retired or resigned.

It’s already like that in San Jose California. Property crimes, break-ins, anything non-violent you file yourself online. Cops only come out if you are personally threatened.
Reason #4 for why I just moved from there.

Since the police won't respond, burglaries will increase and people will die...way to go, BLM. this seems like a self-correcting problem, the more burglars that die, the fewer BLM supporters there will be.
Is it just me or does anyone think that any law-abiding, non-criminal would want to defund the police?
