It seems everyone has an opinion about Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ ambition. The Atlantic examined “Kamala Harris’s Ambition Trap.” Bloomberg asked “Is Kamala Harris Too ‘Ambitious’ to Be Vice President?” Over the summer, even the Vice President-elect herself said, "There will be a resistance to your ambition.” Once Harris is actually sworn in, her niece, children’s book author and founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, Meena Harris, believes it will change the conversation around ambition once and for all. “It inherently will open the door for more women of color to achieve and it will normalize ambition. Female ambition,”

Thousands of people are calling for the evangelist Franklin Graham to be fired for supporting Donald Trump after armed rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol in the president’s name. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 17,000 people have signed a petition by the Christian community Faithful America that pushes for Graham’s removal from Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. The petition, created Jan. 15, is addressed to the board of directors at both organizations. Graham is the son of the late evangelist Billy Graham and is the chairman, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and BGEA.

Cindy McCain endorsed Democrat Joe Biden for president Tuesday in a rebuke of President Donald Trump by the widow of the GOP's 2008 nominee. Trump has had a fraught relationship with members of John McCain's family since he disparaged the Arizona senator during his 2016 campaign. But the McCains have until now stopped short of endorsing Trump's rivals. Cindy McCain cited the decades long friendship between her family and Biden's and their bond as the parents of children serving in the military. “He supports the troops and knows what it means for someone who has served.”

The summer of 2020 has been a summer defined by agitation. What started in Minnesota following the police killing of George Floyd spread quickly across the nation. This past week, Kenosha, Wisconsin, became the latest flashpoint, as protesters clashed with police and armed vigilantes over the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake. One of those vigilantes has been charged with killing two protesters and injuring another.
But another Midwestern city — my city — was the center of attention three weeks ago.

Philadelphia police officers evaded bullets while attempting to reach injured victims when multiple people wielding guns opened fire at a Saturday night block party that drew up to 300 revelers, authorities said.
At least five people, including three teenagers, were wounded in the shooting that erupted near a playground in the Poplar neighborhood of North Philadelphia around 11:30 p.m., Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference early Sunday morning.
Outlaw said police officers were nearby on patrol and rushed to the chaotic scene when they heard shots and saw what appeared

Bill Gates has advocated for pandemic preparedness for years, and famously gave a TED talk in 2015 that warned of the potentially staggering death toll a worldwide pandemic could create. "As awful as this pandemic is, climate change could be worse," Gates said in a blog [snip] "If you want to understand the kind of damage that climate change will inflict, look at COVID-19 and spread the pain out over a much longer period of time. The loss of life and economic misery caused by this pandemic are on par with what will happen regularly if we do not eliminate the world's carbon emissions."

Starbucks' (SBUX) changes to its bathroom policy appear to be impacting foot traffic for the coffee giant despite sales that have outpaced expectations, according to recent data.
Since opening its bathroom doors to the public in the wake of a controversial incident in Philadelphia, the coffee giant has seen a 6.8% drop in store attendance per month relative to other coffee shops nearby, according to the findings of a joint study the University of Texas at Dallas and Boston College.

Singer and Tony-winning, Oscar-nominated actress Diahann Carroll, the first African American woman to star in her own TV series, has died at her home in Los Angeles after a long bout with cancer. She was 84. Carroll is perhaps best remembered by younger audiences for her role as the conniving Dominique Deveraux on the nighttime soap “Dynasty” in the mid-’80s. But her first major television assignment was starring as the middle-class single mother Julia in a 1968 sitcom that was praised for featuring an African American in the title role as much as it was criticized for ignoring the civil rights struggle.
