In a remarkable pre-election open letter to Alabama, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended his decision to recuse himself from the so-called Russia collusion probe that led to his firing, explaining that it was what the “law required me to.”
Over three pages, Sessions, who is seeking to win the Senate seat he gave up to be attorney general in 2017, also said that he has never wavered from his support for President Trump, and he emphasized that even after leaving Washington he has remained a strong ally of the president.

Quite a letter. Recommend reading it before commenting.
Years ago we thought Sessions a hero for standing up for Donald J. Trump and his candidacy for president. We had no idea of what was to come and he didn’t either. No one did except those who were alread engaged in what would be a sprawling plot to keep Donald J. Trump from becoming president, and to remove him if he happened to be elected. That effort continued right on through the Pelosi-Schiff-Nadler impeachment .
Sessions has a lot to say. Although some knew the legal reason for his recusal, many chose to either not know it or to disregard it. He had an impressive career in the Senate. He put it on the line when he joined forces with Donald J. Trump. We should read what he has to say now...

I thought that Rosenstein urged Sessions to recuse himself. We now all know how that turned out with more to be revealed. My thought was they needed Sessions out if the way in order to continue with their shenanigans that continue to this day.

Trump endorsed Tuberville? How could he do that? From the Way Back Machine:
n 2010, Tuberville was a co-defendant with John David Stroud in a lawsuit brought against TS Capital LLC, which the two had founded.[33][dead link] The lawsuit was filed by investors and alleged that Tuberville and Stroud co-managed a hedge fund that defrauded investors of $1.7 million. Stroud was found guilty in August 2013 of securities fraud, ordered to pay $2.1 million in restitution and serve 10 years in jail. The case against Tuberville was settled on October 10, 2013, but terms were not disclosed.[34]
In October 2011, the Business Conduct Committee of the National Futures Association, a self-regulating industry organization, took "emergency enforcement action" to permanently bar Tuberville's firm from soliciting, accepting, transferring or disbursing any funds from investors .

Sessions was a much better ally in the Senate than as AG. Senate is where he belongs.

Totally agree with #4. Sessions was (and would be) a very fine Senator, even though he was a terrible Attorney General. Probably the worst appointment Trump made as President. Like putting a Golden Retriever instead of a Doberman to guard the junkyard.

Depending on who the opponent is running against Sessions, I could see voting for him for Senator again. But he was clearly 'rolled' by Rosenstein on this, and a bit to easily distracted on all this stuff. I suspect some of it is trusting people who, like Rosenstein, turned out to be evil minions.

As an Alabama resident I will be voting for Jeff Sessions.

I will never accept Jeff Session's recusal, and do not admire him for all his discussion of his honor. The fact is, Mr. Sessions, you didn't do your job, and are a very weak individual. I would never support Sessions for any office.

I supported Sessions for a long time, but he ended up being a huge disappointment. What I never understood is why Trump didn't deal with him in private rather than blasting him in public (which I thought--and still do--was in very poor taste). For heaven's sake, if you're not happy with someone's job performance, man up and fire him, or at the very least, tell him in person rather than telling everyone BUT him.

#9, often a criticized employee can buck up, sort things out and go on to be a productive employee, without the need for being fired. I think that is why Trump let it be known that he wasn't happy with Sessions, to hold his feet to the fire, get him to act properly, do what Sessions knew was the right thing.

I live in Alabama and plan on supporting Sessions. I approve of his strong immigration position, and think he is a very honorable man. Finally, in Peter Schweitzer’s boom revealing corrupt politicians, Sessions was not named. A rare honest politician.

I had planned to vote for Bradley Byrne in the primary, but when polling showed it was a two-horse race between Tuberville and Sessions, I voted for Sessions and will again in the run-off. Sessions is careful (to a fault), but this is the US Senate we are talking about. Tuberville's mouth has gotten him in trouble when speaking to groups because he is not careful and controlled. It is like mental gymnastics to figure out his true position on illegal immigration. He would probably make a good Representative, but not a Senator. If he wins, I will certainly vote for him over Doug Jones, but Sessions is the better choice in my opinion.

#10: The place for criticizing an employee is behind closed doors, NOT in the public forum. That type of behavior disgusts me, and no amount of excuses or justification makes it right.

I can't even imagine what Trump went through. He won a clear electoral victory (close to electoral college landslide) and was almost taken out by a vile cabal. The man ultimately in charge of the FBI and enforcing the law listens to people in on the plot, and recuses. And what do we get from Sessions?...his babe in the woods routine. Oh gee, I forgot, Sessions appointed Huber to get to the bottom of the whole thing. I'm now purple...with veins sticking out of my neck and forehead.

Yes #8, and what everyone ignores is that Sessions will say what he has to because he wants back in his Senate club for life. There are more than a few like us or Sessions would not have penned this letter. He will get back in though because the establishment smoothes the way as they fo for their pals.

I neglected to add that again, Trump’s appointment of Session to AG was at Sessions’ request. We were told its the job he had always wanted and Trump granted his wish. So I agree Jeff was a mighty poor choice but again, the blame rests on Sessions.

Personnel is Trump's short suit. From Rex to Mad Dog to Jeff...toss in Priebus, Flynn, Spicer, Bannon...and the ever popular Omarosa! This is what happens when an outsider comes inside. Running the government is not running a business, especially a proprietary empire. And it's harder when government is largely arrayed to help you fail or otherwise resist.

Sessions has a serious problem with the truth. He was there to protect the Swamp called the FBI/DOJ, and Grassley helped to protect Sessions. Yes, Sessions recused, maybe it was okay at first. But when the investigation went so far afield, Sessions should have voided his recusal and came back on board to not only protect his boss, but fight for the nation as well. Sessions lied to Trump to get the job, and then left him out to dry. There is simply no excuse for what Sessions did, and he needs to continue paying the price of what he did with continued oblivion. He sat by while Rosenstein and others tried to overthrow our president and run a circus investigation. He had to have known it was all false, and no fancy lawyer-speak letter is going to buy him absolution.
two previous commenters who love Sessions need to reread all the information regarding Sessions from back then. Sessions has been exposed as a swamp creature who does not support Trump, and puts corruption over doing the right thing. Do we really want him back in the senate? I don't. I support the coach, who by the way, supports Trump.

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to clarify:
Back in 2011, Peter Schweizer published “Throw Them All Out”, a detailed examination of political corruption as it is actually practiced in the halls of Congress.
In his investigation, Schweizer found one single member of Congress against whom no allegations could be held – who had never taken a dime that was not his, had never cut any backroom deals, had never, simply put, played the game. JEFF SESSIONS. The only one.
