Iran’s supreme leader has now openly acknowledged what the Islamic Republic has spent weeks trying to obscure from the world.
In remarks carried by Iranian state media on Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei admitted that “several thousand deaths” had occurred during Iran’s latest wave of nationwide protests, while blaming the United States and Israel for the bloodshed. Protesters, he declared, were “criminals,” “mercenaries,” and mohareb (enemies of God) – a charge that carries the death penalty under Iranian law.
For over four decades, the Islamic Republic has relied on a familiar formula for survival. It begins with repression at home, then blames foreign intervention, and waits for the world to hesitate.

Democrats are bullish about retaking the House of Representatives and making Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) the next Speaker after the midterm elections. Part of that optimism is the cushion of five seats created through further gerrymandering of California’s U.S. House districts.
According to one respected Ninth Circuit judge, however, California may have a slight problem: Its new congressional map may be based on racial discrimination.

Dear Mr. Baker,
I am but one in a sea of many Americans viewed as a threat to the established order. I was once a part of that order. I helped build it. It would turn out I couldn’t survive because I couldn’t follow the rules of thought and speech that are mandated by everyone on the Left, especially those at the New York Times.
It’s personal, you see. I used to believe that if all I did was read Page One of the New York Times, I’d be well-informed. Brainwashed is more like it.
It’s easy to spot the bias now where it wasn’t before.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has responded to calls to exclude the U.S. and its athletes from the upcoming Winter Olympics over the country's recent military intervention in Venezuela. The committee ruled out any penalty on the U.S. in the aftermath of the intervention.
"As a global organization, the IOC has to manage a complex reality. The IOC has to deal with the current political context and the latest developments in the world," the IOC said in a statement to the BBC.
"The ability to bring athletes together, no matter where they come from, is fundamental to the future of values-based, truly global sport,

It's no understatement to say that the 2006 documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" changed the direction of public policy. And in fact, that's exactly what failed presidential candidate Al Gore intended the film to do. Fortunately for him, he found a willing audience of Hollywood celebrities and left-wing media outlets to uncritically promote his ideology and activism.
Unfortunately for him, 2006 is now far enough in the past that we can test some of the predictions, claims, and statements of fact he makes in that film. So that's exactly what we did.

In an exclusive interview with DW, Iranian human rights activist and 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi calls for urgent measures to prevent the killing of civilians in Iran. The US could use "jamming technology" to disrupt regime's communication with its security forces and the spread of its propaganda.
Ebadi also proposes "highly targeted actions against Iran's supreme leader and senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guard," noting that similar operations have previously occurred in Iran without harming civilians.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has renewed his call for the reconstruction of “La Gran Colombia,” proposing a confederation of autonomous nations to be established through a popular constituent vote.
The proposal, announced via social media on Saturday, comes just one week after the United States military captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in Caracas. Petro’s vision seeks to revive the 19th-century state — which comprised modern-day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela — as a defensive and economic bloc, a move critics view as a populist strategic pivot amid heightened regional tensions and U.S. interventionism.

Former NFL wide receiver Frank Murphy called on male athletes to stand up for their female colleagues and help promote fairness in women’s and girls’ sports.
Murphy, who serves as the chairman of Athletes for America at the America First Policy Institute, appeared on "Fox & Friends First" on Thursday and talked about blue states thumbing their nose at President Donald Trump’s executive order to ban biological males from girls’ and women’s sports.

As the world watches Iran, those inside the country are dealing with a communications shutdown that makes it nearly impossible to get any message out. For many Iranians, both home and abroad, isolation and chaos have been piled on top of more existential concerns over the future of their country.
Precise information is difficult to come by, but estimates suggest between 95 and 99% of the country's communication network — from mobile phone and internet signals to landline telephones — has been blocked since Friday.

The precision strike against Venezuela that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife on criminal charges was without a doubt one of the high points of U.S. military history.
And there should be no doubt that the success of the operation redounds to the credit of President Donald J. Trump. No other president in recent memory would have had the guts or imagination to authorize the operation, but Trump has a history of using the military in a surgical manner to take out our enemies (in the case of Qasem Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Quds Force) or to neutralize global threats

As anti-regime protests continue to spread across Iran and questions swirl about the durability of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s rule, a central question looms: Who would actually take power if the Islamic Republic were to collapse? The answer, according to regional experts and Iranian opposition figures, is far from clear. It may depend less on ideology than on how the regime falls and whether Iran’s security forces fracture or hold. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the critical variable is not simply whether the regime collapses, but how it happens.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) abandoned his ludicrous quest for a third term on Jan. 5. He has angrily refused to resign from office. Whenever he departs, whether upon his resignation some time this year or the expiration of his term early next year, we can say this much with certainty: Like former President Joe Biden, he has become a dispensable inconvenience to Democrats, in this case, Minnesota Democrats facing the 2026 elections at all levels of state government, and, like Biden, he will leave office in disgrace.
