Trump threatens 200% tariff on alcohol

US President Donald Trump has threatened a 200% tariff on any alcohol coming to the US from the European Union (EU) in the latest twist of an escalating trade war. The threat is a response to the EU's plans for a 50% tax on imports of US-produced whiskey as part of its retaliation to Trump's tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports to the US. The US president called for the immediate removal of the EU's "nasty" tariff on US whiskey, calling the bloc "hostile and abusive" and "formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States".

Health consideratons turned me into a teetotaler years ago. Sympathy to anyone who imbibes European booze.

Never liked the taste any alcoholic beverages or the effects on me, so haven't had a drink in about 50+ years. This won't affect me or my wife, but the French make a lot of money from wine, so this will hurt them. I hear from friends that many American wines are top grade, this should help their business.

Thank you President Trump. He is hammering the EU in an industry essential to Europe but unnecessary to the US. We have plenty of good wine and other beverages homegrown. EU loses immensely in this trade war. Trumps picks his battles where he can only win. Nice to have an international businessman in office that understands trade.

This should get their attention. President Trump means Business. Stop ripping us off. Fair trade or no trade. This would be devastating for them. They should reconsider, soon.

Somebody should explain to Rand Paul that this is really a good thing. His whining is getting old. Most American wines are descendants of the finer grapes of Italy, France and Spain. Kiss Europe goodbye.

Alcohol in moderation has wonderful potential benefit. However, as used over time and presently, is net very destructive to individual and society.

I enjoy a drink or three from time to time. Most of what I like is locally produced moonshine, but have found Greek wines to be excellent, as well as some German beer and French wine. Still, there are plenty of domestic choices of everything. This wont effect me much, if at all.

French wines are the best in the world for the price point bar none. I won't argue that point because I know I am right. We stocked up on our favorites and ordered our favorites from France prior to this latest predictable tariff scuffle. France has used tariffs for protectionism, it is obvious whenever you go to the grocery there which is one of our favorite things to do in France, don't laugh. The French protect their agricultural and industrial interest in order to protect their farmers and other tradesmen. High time we did the same!! That said, the wine people of France are the rural people, aka the Conservative people, the farmers. We will be hurting our kind of people with this and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I do not like to think about a 6-12 month long fight over this and how many wine making families will be forced under by such a fight. This needs to be settled fast.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign became obsessed with the height of her chair during media hits and other appearances, according to an excerpt of “FIGHT: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House” by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, sat down for their first interview of their campaign in late August, more than a month in, taking questions from CNN’s Dana Bash. Observing that the former vice president looked smaller than Walz, campaign officials worried that would reinforce the ongoing criticism that she was “incapable, or afraid of answering tough questions on her own,” ...

Some of them are people like Mahmoud Khalil, who spent all his time agitating in support of Hamas terrorists. But if you dig deeper, the true story is even more appalling: Columbia is using the prestige of its elite undergraduate school to bring in thousands of mediocre foreigners who want a Columbia degree in computer science, engineering, or a similar field. Columbia admits them because they pay full-freight tuition, boosting their bottom line while glutting the American job market and lowering wages for STEM workers.

A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém. It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November. The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact. The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.

Clinton-appointed Judge Richard Young has ordered the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) to provide sex change surgery for a “transgender” inmate who murdered a baby. The inmate, Jonathan Richardson, who now goes by “Autumn Cordellioné,” is in prison for the reckless homicide of a baby. Richardson was convicted in 2001 for strangling his then-wife’s 11-month-old daughter to death. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the lawsuit against the Indiana Department of Corrections seeking a sex change on behalf of Richardson in 2023, three years after the baby-killer decided to begin identifying as a woman. Currently, there is a law in Indiana banning taxpayer-funded sex change procedures for inmates.

Five states are considering legislation or ratifying constitutional amendments that would either implement voter ID or prevent non-citizen voting, as both issues have become significant election integrity concerns. Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Utah and Wisconsin are in the process of strengthening election integrity by pushing forward bills or proposed constitutional amendments that would verify a voter’s identity and/or ensure that they are a U.S. citizen before voting. Only about half of the states have voter photo ID, and just 15 explicitly prohibit non-citizen voting.
