Costco shareholders voted down an investor proposal from a conservative think tank that urged management to investigate the business risks of its diversity initiatives. More than 98% of shares voted against the proposal, according to preliminary results announced by Costco chairman Hamilton “Tony” James. He and other board members had asked shareholders to reject the proposal involving the company's diversity, equity and inclusion policies ahead of Thursday's annual meeting.

That's OK. They will pay the price in running the programs to support DEI, the annoyance of these programs, and alienating workers that are fed up being programmed by government and their employer. Maybe they will be full of happy and competent DEI employees and the company will be profitable. But I doubt it. Companies are dumping these programs because they are costly, ineffective, and annoying. When you prioritize personal factors over merit to the business, the business suffers. The customers will notice and go elsewhere. The beauty of free enterprise is that Costco can do as it wishes, will benefit or suffer based on those choices, and it's not our problem as a Country. Customers will have the choice and make it based on getting the products, services, and prices they want.

Adoption of "DEI" business practises is akin to the introduction of a virus into a living organism. Its presence may not be noticed at first, but as the virus multiplies, the effect becomes more and more noticable. Like a common cold, where you first notice that little tickle at the back of your throat, but otherwise feel fine. That feeling grows until it manifests as a full-blown URTI, forcing you into bed with a fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea and all the rest. Of course, if the virus is one that produces something more serious, like Ebola or Dengue Fever, death is not out of the questi[on. So, to follow my disease vector analogy, if the DEI virus is allowed by Costco to flourish, its prospect of remaining a viable business entity decreases proportionally. How long will customers pay for the privilege of shopping empty shelves, higher prices, dirty aisles and restrooms, surly and incompetent staff? Time will tell, but I would be dumping all my Costco stock post haste.

DEI is also hard on the morale of their decent employees when they see incompetent employees get promotions because of their race or sexual proclivities. It's not a good way to run a business.

There's a Costco in my home town. But I've never shopped there... and I'll continue to not do so now, along with having closed my wallet to Target since mid-2023. Also, for those who are Sam's shoppers, sorry to burst your bubble, but the head honcho of Walmart Corp's HR operations is Sam Walton's very woke daughter -- the only wokester of the family, but one who is involved in the operations of the family business. So I advise shoppers to get informed and act accordingly. Personally, I'm not a Sam's member, and I minimize what I spend at Walmart.

I was not a member of COSTCO for about 8 years but had been for many prior to that. Now that they have a warehouse near me, I signed up and looked forward to buying a barbecued chicken and some of their steaks. Well in the interim of my non-membership, DEI must have reigned because the chicken was dry and the beef awful. The only stuff I will buy are cleaning products which will stop when the membership ends.

My membership is up for renewal in March. Think I’ll let it run out. I rarely shop there anyway - too much of a hassle with the crowds and parking.

Less than a month into 2025, the ‘Year of the Snake’ is already living up to its ominous reputation. For Russians, it is the symbol of upheaval in the Chinese zodiac: the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, the Nazi invasion of 1941, Stalin’s death in 1953, and the Soviet collapse in 1989 all fell under its shadow. Now, some fear history is once again coiling to strike. Why? Donald Trump’s abrupt shift in tone towards the war in Ukraine.

NASA has ended its diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEI) programs after all federal agencies were directed to 'terminate' the initiatives. Staff received an email Wednesday from acting administrator Janet Petro, which said the space agency is 'taking steps to close all agency DEIA offices and end all DEIA-related contracts in accordance with President Trump's executive orders.' The order is titled 'Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing and Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive Orders and Actions.' NASA's email admitted that 'these programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination.'

Millions of young men once wanted to be Bob Dylan. God forgive me, I was one of them. [SNIP] But the film misses the true importance of the folk superstar Pete Seeger and of Suze Rotolo, though it spends a lot of time on the way they helped the young Dylan to fame. Seeger, later famous for his liberal ‘peace’ songs, had at one time belonged to the tiny, ultra-Stalinist US Communist Party. He wasn’t quite as keen on peace in those days. When most sensible people were very much in favour of fighting the Nazis, in from 1939 to early 1941, Seeger had been a sort of pacifist.

It's unclear if it would advise permanently killing off the penny, or just halting or trimming the penny's production.
