FRANKFURT - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a renewed effort to bring peace to Ukraine, adding that he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had both agreed in recent talks on the need for a new peace conference that would include Russia.
"I believe that now is the time to discuss how to arrive at peace from this state of war, indeed at a faster pace," Scholz told broadcaster ZDF in a televised interview. Scholz is under pressure at home after all three parties in his centre-left coalition suffered painful losses in two regional state elections one week ago, while groups

Two suspected members of a violent Venezuelan prison gang even more hardcore than MS-13 have been released on bond. The two suspected Tren de Aragua gang members — Dixon Azuaje-Perez, 20, and Nixon Azuaje-Perez, 19 — were released by the Aurora, Colorado Police Department after posting a $1,000 bond. The police released the two despite the crimes they allegedly committed and despite U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement having requested that they detain the pair, as confirmed by the New York Post. According to the Aurora Police Department, the two were involved with an attempted murder that occurred in late July. To be

The family of Aysenur Eygi, an American woman who was shot and killed in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday, is demanding an independent investigation into her death. Witnesses, activists and Palestinian media said the dual U.S.-Turkish national was shot by Israeli troops while attending a pro-Palestinian demonstration against settlement expansion in the Nablus area of the northern West Bank, near the town of Beita. (Snip) Eygi, who was raised in Seattle, arrived in the West Bank days before her death to volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement, which helps young foreigners support Palestinians. Letters obtained by The Denver Gazette from the law firm representing CBZ Management — whose apartment complex in Aurora was shut down over what the city described as safety issues last month — show officials were fully aware weeks ago of accusations that a Venezuelan gang had “forcibly taken control” of the property. In an Aug. 28 letter to Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, the law firm wrote that CBZ Management had been informed that “Aurora Multi-Family Projects have been forcibly taken control of by gang(s) that have immigrated here from Venezuela.” (Snip) Aurora officials initially dismissed the company's claims

Two US service members were attacked in Turkey on Monday by a group of anti-American protesters during a violent, caught-on-camera confrontation. The shocking 10-second clip — which was posted to X— captures one of the servicemen victim standing in the center of a half-dozen men who are seizing him by the arms and torso. Online reports identified the man as a serviceman from the USS Wasp, who had just docked in Turkey, and that the incident occurred in the Turkish port city of Izmir. The attackers chanted, “Yankee, go home!” as one assailant wrapped a bag around the unidentified victim’s

WASHINGTON - Several U.S. Democratic lawmakers renewed calls for an Israeli-Hamas ceasefire on Sunday in reaction to the killing of six hostages in a tunnel under Gaza, while Republicans criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for not giving stronger support to Israel. Israel recovered the bodies of six hostages from a tunnel in Gaza where they were apparently killed shortly before its troops reached them, triggering Israeli protests on Sunday and planned strikes over the failure to save them. The military said the bodies of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who is an Israeli-American citizen, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov

The Georgia election workers who successfully sued former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for defamation asked a federal court on Friday to enforce the $146 million judgment in their favor, listing a wide variety of personal items that could be used to pay off the money they’re owed. Lawyers for Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss are seeking a court order requiring that Giuliani turn over within the next seven days his properties in New York and Florida, his Mercedes-Benz, more than two-dozen luxury watches, various sports memorabilia, including three New York Yankees World Series rings, and other personal items. Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday skewered former President Donald Trump for filming at the Arlington National Cemetery, accusing him of exploiting his visit for political purposes, which is prohibited. (Snip) A half-hour later, Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, fired back at Harris in his own social media post: “President trump was there at the invitation of families whose loved ones died because of your incompetence.” “Why don’t you get off social media and go launch an investigation into their unnecessary deaths?” Vance added. The Trump campaign echoed that line of defense in its own social media post

AURORA, Colo. — The national attention on the presence of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) in Colorado could harm immigrants who are not associated with the gang, according to activists. Videos of people alleging Venezuelan gang members are "taking over" Aurora have circulated on social media, particularly claims about an apartment complex the city is closing near Colfax and Peoria. One video depicts several males, who appear to be armed, attempting to break into an apartment unit at an unidentified complex. Neither the city nor the Aurora Police Department has confirmed those claims. Activists told Denver7 the headlines are

First, it was Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who was accused of “being untruthful” about his military record. Now it’s Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who recently delivered a speech at the DNC and is considered a rising star in his party, and whose “guns” (biceps) Joe Biden admires. You see, Moore had been introduced as a Bronze Star recipient by television interviewers in 2008 and 2010 and neither he nor his aides corrected them—despite the fact that he did not receive the award. As controversies go, it didn’t ruin his career, and he won the gubernatorial election

Ukraine said Thursday that one of its F-16 fighter jets made by the United States crashed while repelling a Russian air strike, killing the pilot onboard. A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News the F-16 crashed on Monday. The announcement marks the first reported destruction of an F-16 in Ukraine, just weeks after Kyiv began taking delivery of the supersonic aircraft. Initial reports are the plane wasn't shot down by the Russians, CBS News has learned. "F-16 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were used to repel a missile attack on the territory of Ukraine by the Russian Federation

The 2024 hurricane season is not going as predicted – yet. So far this year, including the three that are spinning Monday, there have been more storms in the Pacific than the Atlantic, and that's a bit of a surprise, forecasters say. In addition, it's been eerily calm in the Atlantic over the past week or so as we approach what's traditionally the busiest time of the season. "It is quiet out there," Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach told USA TODAY on Monday. "I certainly wasn't expecting this when we put out our most recent seasonal forecast!" "We haven't had
