Sasse’s spending spree: Former UF president
channeled millions to GOP allies, secretive contracts

Original Article

In his 17-month stint as UF president, Ben Sasse more than tripled his office’s spending, directing millions in university funds into secretive consulting contracts and high-paying positions for his GOP allies. Sasse ballooned spending under the president’s office to $17.3 million in his first year in office — up from $5.6 million in former UF President Kent Fuchs’ last year, according to publicly available administrative budget data. A majority of the spending surge was driven by lucrative contracts with big-name consulting firms and high-salaried, remote positions for Sasse’s former U.S. Senate staff and Republican officials.

Comments:

Well, well, well...what do we have here? The "above board," highly moral Ben Sasse has been plundering UF. And, of course, he's now using his wife's illness to get out of town. Not only does this do damage to UF, it does huge damage to conservatives in the state who've been trying turn the WOKE tide in higher ed and I'm sure this is going to damage DeSantis as well. Also, please remember Sasse was one of Trump's most vocal and obstinate critics in the Senate.

Sass is a big government RINO spender, and as I remember that was one of the reasons that he quickly fell out of favor with Nebraska voters.

Looks like he richly rewarded his friends and colleagues at the expense of the University of Florida. It all looks grossly excessive to the extent his 17 month gig came to an abrupt end when he resigned. Ostensibly to care for his ailing wife, but epilepsy is something that can generally be controlled very well with medication. I would hope UF ascertains what these individuals did for their excessive salaries, and the consultants who were paid provided tangible reports for those fees.

He found cushy landing spots for his Senate staffers and friends, most of whom had no obvious experience in higher education and didn't even have to move to Florida. I'm guessing he jumped before he got pushed out of his job. Now someone else gets to clean up his mess, but most of it is relatively easy - lay off his cronies. Amazing how generous these D.C types are when it is someone else's money.

A federal judge ordered CBS News senior correspondent Catherine Herridge to reveal her sources for a series of stories about the FBI's investigation of a Chinese American scientist back when she worked for Fox News. The order last week from U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper in Washington D.C. comes after scientist Yanping Chen filed a lawsuit against the FBI, claiming that the agency violated the privacy act by improperly leaking information about her. While working at Fox News in 2017, Herridge used a confidential source or sources to obtain material about the federal counterintelligence probe of Chen.

A primary suspect in the unsolved disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway during a trip to the Dutch Caribbean Island of Aruba in 2005 will be extradited to the United States from Peru. The suspect, Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot, has never been charged in Holloway's death, and he is being extradited to the U.S. on extortion and wire fraud charges. However, Holloway's family hopes that the extradition will in so way bring justice, or at least closure, to the teen's disappearance. The government of Peru said Wednesday that van der Sloot will be sent to the U.S.

The 2022 elections should have been a wake-up call for Georgia Democrats after they lost eight of nine statewide races in November and saw the defeat of some of the party’s biggest, brightest stars. With the notable exception of U.S. Sen. Over 70% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents report having a positive view of Israel, while only 44% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents share this perception, according to Pew Research Center in 2022. Tim Walz hasn't exactly had the best introduction to the nation. Despite the best efforts of the campaign and the mainstream media to brand him as a midwestern centrist and "America's dad," among other things, it's hard not to wonder if Walz will be the next candidate the campaign will force off the ticket to make for someone less controversial and with less baggage. The biggest issue, of course, is that Walz has come under fire for stolen valor. Earlier this month, Newsweek reported that the Minnesota National Guard was disputing Walz's military biography. They reported that despite the governor's assertions, Walz did not retire with the rank of command sergeant major.

One consistent element of wokeness is that it is inconsistent. Wokeness, as influencer Teal Swan sagely remarks, has become "a radical political and social ideology that is flirting with authoritarianism and that is wearing a mask of virtue." That mask slips so often we might refer to it as a "wardrobe malfunction." Virtue, among the truly woke, is frangible. What might be virtuous in one situation could be evil in another. It might depend on who is being virtuous. It might depend on what the wokie had for breakfast. Suffice it to say that most woke people on the left have no idea what is virtuous and what isn't.
