Barry Diller has run two studios, Paramount and Fox, and believes (correctly) that the Oscars and the movie business are both dead.
Los Angeles Magazine scooped up all the Diller doomspeaking…
“It’s an antiquity,” the current IAC and Expedia chairman told Firing Line‘s Margaret Hoover of the awards process. Citing the Riseborough Affair, Diller noted the internal collapse the movie and awards-show industry have long been suffering. “All awards ceremonies were based on this hierarchical process of a movie going to a theater, building up some word of mouth if it was successful, having that word of mouth carry itself over,” Diller said. “That path no longer exists.”

The Oscars are a Democrat Party rally. The movies are themed for diversity, and the audience may be diverse, but the interests of that diverse audience are not diverse, so there are few general audience movies. Nobody knows who the actors are today. The actors of yesterday were not living people, but profiles created by the studios. Over the last 40 years, I have seen about 4 that I enjoyed.

And it was good ..funn and nice clothes ..until the stuff produced was NOT entertaining .but schlock indoctrination.Like are there no same color couples and unsame gender couples ? Really ? awards are now like fahrts into the public’s face .: ephemeral at best .. beano worthy usually

The awards and the actual movies are two different audiences.
The awards are for patting each other on the back and the movies are to make money. Neither has anything to do with the other.

Other than comic book heros and Tom Cruise, there are few heros anymore. We went to war against Islamic terrorists and how many movies were made about it? How many about 9/11? Everything that an American could relate to is not allowed to be discussed. We can hate Russians - that is about it. No heros, no good story.

My husband and I have sure done our fair share of the work in bankrupting them by not seeing a single Hollyweird movie in the past 6 years.
Hopefully we can have equal luck with Disney in the near future...

Hollywood hasn't had an original idea in decades. Everything is either a sequel, prequel, remake or reboot. Everything else is comic book superhero movies made for grown, male nerd children.
Between that and the woke politics, it's no wonder people don't go to the movies.

Diller nails it. Hollywood is producing a corrupt product nobody wants. There hasn't been an original new movie for the last 20 years. I don't go anymore.

I had not been to the movies in 15 years when my sister wanted to see "Little Women" 2019. So I went. It was better than ok but I could have lived without seeing it. And the next movie I saw was "Elvis" with my son this past year which was very good. I have not been back and do not intend to go back. If I want to see something I will stream it. I stream very few new movies, mostly golden oldies. Award shows? I'd rather have diarrhea.

#1 is correct. I still occasionally go to a movie theater....even went during the Dem-Panic when they theaters were open.
But, so much of the current Hollyweird output is such disgusting trash and/or propaganda that about 95% aren't something that I'd watch even if it was free, let alone pay the current high prices for them.
I still remember the Saturday matinee's in Key West when I was a kid for 50 cents my brother and I would watch several fun serials like Buck Rogers and then a couple of movies, back to back. All afternoon. We rode out on our bikes ....it's a 3 mile by 5 mile island, nothing was very far from home.

Firing Line. So that's what became of Margaret Hoover after she turned left.

The Oscars were dead the moment they instituted "diversity measures" at the behest of people like Jada Pinket Smith to help minorities win more. In reality it made it so the only people that could ever win on actual merit were White. Everyone else became a token winners, Oscar jokes, given trophies more so based on skin pigmentation or sexual preference than acting ability.

Hollywood is liberal, therefore depraved.
Its product is not funny, it is not entertaining, it is not literate, it is not uplifting, it is not original, it is not thought-provoking
Hollywood is filth. It celebrates evil Boycott Hollywood.

Today's movies are all about murder and mayhem using guns, violence, and sex, and special effects. They need plot and setting and characters who have character. Give us a good mystery with good actors. Hollywood needs good writers. We read so much about directors and producers who are sexual predators. Their movies are a reflection of who they are. It is time to shut them down. They are helping to destroy our society.

The pay to these people who are good at pretending to be someone else based on the ability to make people want to watch their performance is their reward. Why do they require an award show? Do plumbers have an award show for the plumber who saved a persons house from flooding from a leak? I would rather recognize someone who has skills that make a difference in my life rather than someone who is good at being phoney.

We stopped going when the movie-goers started chatting with each other during the movie as if they were sitting in their living room. We are from the old days when movie theaters had "crying rooms" for Moms to watch the movie without their baby disturbing the rest of the audience.

One would think that since it cost a fortune to make a movie nowadays, the studios would put out a product people would want to see. Apparently making money isn't their top priority. Disney has gone down that path and their stock price has taken a hit. When people start dumping Disney stock, the end is in sight for those running the company.

I haven't watched the Oscars ever since that fat slob Michael Moore-ron criticized my them C-in-C GWB about the Iraq War. That was nearly 20 years ago. Heck the last movie I saw was Top Gun Maverick only because O won tickets from the local radio station. Mr. Diller is 100% correct and as for me both can stay dead.

Sad, but true. We grew up loving & learning as we watched many, MANY HOLLYWOOD productions. But when the lefty-agenda gang began propagandizing absolutely everything, including cartoons, we returned to the more ethical yet older productions on TV for real entertainment. What passes for entertainment here in 2023 doesn't entertain, but instead, indoctrinates!
