A proposal by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to consider renaming a Queens post office that honors LGBTQ rights pioneers is sparking outrage among local activists. Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens, Bronx) is soliciting suggestions for the Jeanne and Jules Manford Post Office Building in Jackson Heights, a representative for the congresswoman’s office told Community Board 3 in Queens last week.
Jeanne Manford is considered to have been the first parent to march with their child in an LGBTQ parade a half century ago.(Snip)The renaming idea began with a community suggestion to honor the late LGBTQ activist Lorena Borjas, according to Hitt. “You don’t take one pioneer of the LGBT movement

A Chicago student who allegedly robbed a train conductor at gunpoint to buy a snack before class was turned into police by his own mother, who recognized him through widely-circulated surveillance images of the brazen daytime robbery. Loyola University Chicago student Zion Brown, 18, was charged with armed robbery for allegedly pulling out a black semi-automatic handgun Tuesday aboard a Metra Electric Line train and stealing the conductor's petty cash.(Snip)But the excuse elicited little sympathy from the judge, who quipped that she too was once a hungry student but never resorted to violence to finance snacks, CWB Chicago reported. Brown was denied bail.

A study finds that suspects in violent crime in the District share a lot of characteristics. The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform looked at the numbers for homicides and nonfatal shooting in D.C. in 2019 and 2020, and found that “most gun violence is tightly concentrated on a small number of very high-risk young Black male adults that share a common set of risk factors.”(Snip)While the motive for the shooting “may not be a traditional gang war,” the report says, “often shootings are precipitated by a petty conflict over a young woman, a simple argument, or the now-ubiquitous social media slight.”

Seattle—A mobile Seattle police precinct set up at the corner of 12th Ave. and Jackson St. aims to deter crime in the area but for some businesses, the increased police visibility has come too late.
Saki, the owner of Ten Sushi, located in a complex at the Little Saigon intersection, said she is already packing up to move.
In December, Saki began posting Instagram videos of drug use, bonfires, erratic behavior and car break-ins at the business complex. She has boarded up her windows with a painted mural, and she keeps a stun gun handy. "You know, they try to come inside," Saki said.

American teenagers have gotten the short end of the stick for more than two years—being forced to attend school either in a mask or via Zoom, while missing out on countless rites of passage despite their virtually nonexistent chance of falling seriously ill from Covid-19. And now—as the far more mild Omicron strain enters the rear-view mirror and things begin to return to normal—used cars have become so expensive that many teens can't afford them, according to the Wall Street Journal.(Snip)Meanwhile, teenagers are earning less than before—with median wages for workers aged 16-19 having increased 14.6% over the last two years

A sports expert claims controversial transgender swimmer Lia Thomas deliberately underperformed during a recent race she won to make her advantage look less obvious. By comparing lap times for the medalists at the Ivy League Women's Championships' 500-yard free on Thursday, CBS sports analyst Ross Tucker posited that the trans UPenn swimmer 'produced a controlled effort below max for the race,' suggesting that she underperformed to minimize the appearance of an advantage over competitors. Thomas, who swam for the University of Pennsylvania's men's team as recently as 2019 when she began medically transitioning to a woman, recorded the fastest time of all swimmers in the women's 500-yard freestyle
