American teenagers have gotten the short end of the stick for more than two years—being forced to attend school either in a mask or via Zoom, while missing out on countless rites of passage despite their virtually nonexistent chance of falling seriously ill from Covid-19. And now—as the far more mild Omicron strain enters the rear-view mirror and things begin to return to normal—used cars have become so expensive that many teens can't afford them, according to the Wall Street Journal.(Snip)Meanwhile, teenagers are earning less than before—with median wages for workers aged 16-19 having increased 14.6% over the last two years

I wouldn't mind replacing my old Ford with something new, but I will not pay half the value of my house. The cost of a new pickup truck is insane, considering few windows, few seats and few materials to make. A car is only slightly less insane. No thanks.

I drive a 2017 Toyota Corolla with just over 20k original miles on the odometer. My father drives a 2012 Camry with around 49k miles. Every time either of us goes to have service done at the dealership, they ask us if we want to upgrade to a new vehicle. They REALLY want our cars so they can resell them for a premium price.
At this point, in this economy, I can't imagine looking for my first used car. Speaking from experience, there are a lot of unscrupulous independent dealers willing to sell repaired salvage vehicles, undisclosed flood vehicles and cars that otherwise are too unsafe to be on the road. Hopefully, these car buyers have someone with them to give them advice and who can check a vehicle thoroughly before any paperwork is signed.

My grandson bought ''beaters'' to get around to his various jobs while in high school. Finally, he got a
'stang he'd admired. Now he is selling it; anybody want a gray Mustang with a rad racing stripe?

My first car at 16 was a '63 red Covair Spyder for $400 baby-sitting/birthday money. Loved the car, but Ralph Nader was right. The right rear tire blew out on the 405 fwy in the San Fernando Valley, and I spun around 180 degrees facing the oncoming traffic as we careened backwards into a bridge railing. The last three feet of it before the steep embankment. (Thank you, Guardian Angel!) A truck of young brick layers stopped to help us. (Whew! They were hunks!) They changed the tire, and after the CHP stopped traffic, turned the car around for me.
I now drive my lifetime favorite; '96 white Jeep Cherokee. Purchased in 2000 for $11,000. She has 313,000 miles and has only had a few major repairs. As long as I keep up regular service she keeps going. She got me through 16 inches of snow over our unplowed gravel roads, up and over the ridge and safely down to the highway. We bought TK a new Grand Cherokee in 2017 and I choked on the $30,000 price tag then! I hope we can keep TK's '96 Dodge 2500 going. No way could we afford a new truck now!
I feel so sorry for the teenagers and young folks starting out. We have to fight this and win. A good way is to remind every young person that it was the Democrats who did this to them.

Agreed, #6; the DemonCommieRats did this, while the Republicants sat on their hands or actively assisted the ‘rats.

I guess myself and the TQ are kindred spirits. I drive a 98 12 valve dodge one ton (150k miles) and a 96 jeep cherokee (heavily modified, 190k miles) . Both run as good as new. Haven't made a car payment since 1982. (being mechanically inclined helps). By not selling my soul to the bank after that for the latest and greatest I was able to retire at 52. I have never experienced that "new car smell", and watching the decline in automotive quality and escalating prices over the years, never had the desire. I agree with #1. Paying 60,000 dollars for a new pickup is nuts, but people do it every day, and pay for it long past its warranty period. I've always told kids (when they might listen) buying a new car is the worst investment you will ever make. I may be wrong, but it's worked for me.

Used gasoline/diesel powered vehicles are going to be more and more expensive because of the federal government's electric vehicle policies.

I have found that youngsters arent much into driving like I was and everyone else that I knew back in the day. A 17 year old was at my home with my kids and he didnt drive. I asked why and he replied, I didnt feel like paying 300 bucks for drivers Ed. Said he could get his license at age 18 without it.

The used car shortages were seeded under Obama’s Cash for Clunkers program. Perfectly decent used cars for teens taken off the streets forever. They knew what they were doing.

This happens EVERY TIME Democrats are in power.
Every time.
Why are people so stupid as to vote them into office? ARE people really that stupid?
Or have the Democrats, run by a small number of obscenely rich Elites scammed everyone for decades, fraudulently manufacturing political victories out of smoke and mirrors? Think about it.

Why is this a problem for teens? I’ve been reading for several years that teens aren’t interested in learning to drive and having their own cars. I don’t understand it as we seasoned citizens couldn’t wait to get a license and a car - it was all about mobility and freedom. I guess that today’s teens don’t need mobility because they have their smart phones and social media.

My first car was a 1967 Ford Thunderbird. Paid 150$.......and I swear, for the next year I was constantly replacing something. Ive been wondering for some time now how the youth are getting cars. The costs for used vehicles may help to explain why so many youths are still living at home with their parents. Real-estate is astronomical, rents have gone through the roof. One cant get into a decent apartment without good credit or a co-signer.
In my youth, kids moved out after high school graduation.

I guess I was lucky. There was a plethora of 1970s gas guzzlers for sale when I started driving. They weren't pretty but the engines were reliable, the prices low, and the back seats were roomy enough to fit all your friends back there.

Used cars are in such demand that they are being placed in showrooms because there are no new cars for the dealers put there. Just this week, a ship carrying new Porsches, VW's, and Audi's caught fire off the coast of Europe. Apparently, the fire was bad enough that the entire crew abandoned ship. The condition of the cargo is unknown, but Porsche, VW, and Audi dealers will be waiting a little while longer for new cars to appear in their showrooms.

Cash for Clunkers may have been in 2009 but its still going on. If your car fails a smog test you can't sell it, the only options are to fix it costing more than its worth or junk it and the State will pay you more than its worth. Of course I junked it and the state paid me cash.

Wifey got a new car last November. The dealer we bought it from is already making offers to buy it back. Sounds like such a deal, but if we sold it, what would we buy then?

#12 is correct! Barack Obola gave us Cash for Clunkers, which required that the clunkers could not be stripped of reusable parts. You youngsters should think before you vote.

Never forget Obama's "Cash for Clunkers" scheme that used taxpayer money to destroy a wide swathe of vehicles in the used car pipeline. That very expensive hole in the inventory was still being worked through when the Chinese Chip deficiency hit new car manufacturing. And now inflation arrives. Oh, it's a self induced problem, folks.
