A man in Philadelphia allegedly shot three men and killed one from his house while they were attempting to steal his car Tuesday morning.
The victim of the robbery allegedly had a license to carry a firearm and shot the three men while they were trying to take his car, according to Philadelphia Police. Police have characterized the incident as a “robbery/attempted carjacking.”
The trio tried to flee in a gray Honda Accord, but it crashed into a school bus. Two of the thieves fled, but the third one was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital, the report said.

The victim of the theft/carjacking will probably be charged with more than the perps who survived the ordeal.
The relatives of the deceased man asked how shooting a person over a car was ever justified. I don't want people to die, but the deceased and his pals should have taken into account the potential consequences of their actions.
In some sense, the pals of the deceased should be charged with the man's death as it happened in the commission of their crime. I believe that is called transferred intent.

To the family of the deceased thug...perhaps if your felon would have gotten a job, earned money, and purchased his own car rather that stealing a car from someone else who DID get a job, earned money, and purchased a car...he'd still be breathing. You reap what you sow.

...don't know about Philly, but around here, we have right to use deadly force to protect our property, even to stop vandalism.

Same here #4. Georgia also has a law if your partner in crime gets killed while the two of you are robbing a store, YOU will also be charged with murder.

Stretching the rules a bit but I would probably have shot the jackals too. Three less d-bags on the street.

Re #5: That's called felony murder. When violent criminals go out in groups and (even) one of them dies committing the crime, they're all guilty of felony murder.

Very poor choice of headline.
1)LTCF s (License to Carry A Firearm) are not all that uncommon in the city of Philadelphia and outside the city, actually quite common.
2) If the story is correct as written (Car owner was in his home - not 'carjacked' at gunpoint) it appears the owner made a very bad mistake, that will be VERY costly.
If as described the owner was not imminently in danger of suffering great bodily harm, permanent injury, or death, the use of deadly force was not justified.
As angry as most of us are that criminals seem not to ever be held accountable for their actions, the LTCF does not carry police powers with it. A mere property crime does not justify the use of deadly force. If, as described, the owner left his home to confront the thieves it will likely be even worse for him
Sorry , folks. As much as the situation pains me, this very clearly looks like a bad shoot .

Let’s see what a jury of his peers think. Jury nullification is a real thing.

I'm with #10. Although the law varies, shooting at anyone outside your house (i.e., your castle) while you're inside and under bo immediate threat of harm is a tough sell in court.

Poster 1 is correct, I think. The victim better lawyer up to defend against charges to be brought by Soros funded Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner.

"“It was a car! All he had to do is call the police. … You don’t shoot someone out in the street over a car.”"
In what world does she live, where police will intercept a car burglary when called?
She should rail against her deceased lifelong friend -- "you don't steal someone else's car!"

I agree that any shoot will bring trouble, but we really need more rational defensive moves to end our decent into third world crime. Let them have your car and they will rob your house. Does the value of the theft determine the justification to shoot? We ALL pay for insurance for both home and car, and allowing theft scot free is a crime against all of us.

(Not to mention that the perps had a gun in their getaway car, too. So Tanya should just shut her yap about not shooting somebody for taking a car... They were apparently ready to shoot somebody for defending his car.)

The thugs are going to wish they were in jail instead of out on bail. It might save their lives.
This is all about public safety. People want to be safe, and they will kill to protect that right. It's very personal.

Folks, think of this: If you agree your car is not worth losing your life over, why would you kill someone trying to steal yours when his bros are just going to come back later and kill you and probably take it anyway?

If he was standing in front of the car trying to stop them and they drove toward him I believe shooting is justified. A car is a deadly weapon.

Just completed my LTC here in Texas. By law, you can protect yourself or your property. Personally, I couldn’t do it. However, he may have saved these gun toting thugs from someone else’s murder. The shooter, defending his property has the full support of the law. (And me)

A friend lived in Miami in the "roaring 80s" when crime was rampant. He used to send me newspaper clippings of crime stories....remember newspapers? Remember reasonably accurate crime reporting?
Living here in Kansas, I was absolutely amazed that the prosecutors in Miami in that period pretty much gave up on prosecuting ANY honest citizen for ANY shooting of a criminal. Stuff that would, for certain, get you indicted for 2nd deg murder here, wasn't charged in Miami. Bad guy dead, no fouls called.
Apparently the jury pool had had ENOUGH. Their view was apparently "good guy shoots bad guy, bad guy is dead, we are done here". Several cases were a burglar running away, no gun visible...shot in the back as running, called a good shooting, burglar is dead, no charges. Sure sends a message to the bad guys.
Jury nullification is a real thing. When the jury pool gets sick of the violence - the "Marquis of Queensbury" rules of engagement in these things gets cancelled by the juries.
Basically:
"Dead bad guy, GOOD, we do NOT care how it may have happened."
I don't know if Philly juries are "there" yet, but it sure can happen if the crime rate gets to were the average person, or even 25% of them "have had it up to here".

Actually (see #16) as orescribed by state law, the PA LTCF is applied for by submitting the app to the county Sheriff or Chief law enforcement officer. (Philadelphia is its own county.)
After conducting a background check the sheriff approves (or not) and issues the PA license. He or she can also revoke for cause.

And, although being attacked by a driver in a car would be the sort of deadly force situation that could be responded to with similar deadly force.
In Texas one can defend property with force. Under the laws of PA you cannot
Ability, opportunity and jeopardy. Right now, not prospective or retrospective which us why, for example, once the attacker turns and runs, firing on him or her is no longer self defense and subjects one to legal consequences.
NB IANAL.

A "feels good" story we can all enjoy. What did the guide advise let them have your car? Too bad he didn't get all three but don't worry at least 2 will be back on the streets tomorrow. They will probably investigate him for having a loaded firearm and using excessive force.
