As the Omicron variant rips across the U.S., in early January almost 9 million Americans said they were not working because they had COVID-19 or were caring for someone with the virus — triple the number from a month ago. The surge in sick workers is impacting industries ranging from hospitals to airlines, adding to the nation's labor crunch. The "great American sickout," as some have called it, is taking a toll on many businesses and households, with people again forced to scale back work as the disease spreads. We spent the weekend with family and my 36 year old son texted me Monday and said he tested positive. He was a little under the weather. Hubs and I are fine. I don’t know why people feel the need to get tested. What’s the point? I won’t give the government a case to count even if I get it.

A lot of those 9 million are out of work because they tested positive with covid, but they're not sick! If you get paid while out with covid, it's a lot easier to sit at home or work from home.

I was talking with a friend today who finally escaped Covid quarantine….she said it was like a cold. Since the cold virus is actually a Covid-type virus I have to wonder how many people are being diagnosed with Covid 19 when it’s really just a cold.

The people "out with Covid" at my job all have mild colds and a positive Covid test that gives them a week off. There are also a couple who have "symptoms" and so "better not come to work, just in case." Perhaps not the dire situation CBS News is trying to make of it.

Build up or pay up. That is the message Massachusetts is sending to 175 cities and suburbs in the Boston area, as a bill passed last year to boost housing production begins to take effect. Almost every jurisdiction in Eastern Massachusetts, from the New Hampshire border to Worcester to the Cape Cod Canal, will have to do its part zoning for 344,000 new units of as-of-right multifamily housing—or lose access to some state grant programs. That mean allowing apartments in many tony subdivisions currently reserved for single-family homes. For perspective, all of Massachusetts currently builds just 15,000 new units

Over the past three years, dozens of cities across the country have banned natural gas hookups in newly constructed buildings as part of a growing campaign to reduce carbon emissions from homes. The movement scored a major victory last month, when New York City’s outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law a ban on gas hookups in new buildings. Though new laws apply to the entire home, the policy debate often focuses on one room in particular: the kitchen. Gas stoves account for a relatively small share of the emissions released by a typical household, but they’ve become a
