Insulation was supposed to save us money
- but it ruined our homes: Millions face
crippling repair costs after green upgrades
were botched

Getting Britain’s homes insulated is the cornerstone of the Government’s green energy policy and an obsession for road-blocking eco-protesters. But the scale of damp-related problems linked to cavity wall insulation is so serious that an MP is calling for an independent inquiry to improve protection for householders. One expert has estimated that up to two million homes may have problems as a result of insulation being pumped into the cavity between outside and inside walls. In some extreme cases, the resulting problems of damp and mould inside the house have rendered properties worthless and unsellable.(Snip)Fixing cavity wall insulation disasters can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Comments:

How great is this? The homes of ordinary people are rendered unusable, perhaps repairable at great expense, for no reason other than the government's twisted lust to extract as much money from people as possible while controlling every aspect of their lives, from "necessarily skyrocketed" utility bills to what sort of insulation they claim is needed to offset those bills. The best part is that the public will pay yet again through increased taxes to pay for the remediation. In benighted days, the rabble would not stand for it, but today we swell with pride at being Green, sitting freezing and hungry in the dark.

I never did like these spray in foams. Some of the early versions gave off formaldahyde and stank and were toxic. All of them seem to prevent moisture from leaving the home, which is questionable. You want SOME moisture barrier, but the walls need to be able rid themselves of moisture, too.

Th last time I read a story similar to this insulation stuff was about 10 years ago. Global warming was a hot topic and the "experts" were predicting the end of snowfall in the UK. The British Isles were going to be sunny like the south of France so why not take the opportunity to put in a swimming pool while prices were still within bounds. The gullible by the thousands put in pools only to see snow return and cold weather...no change from the past ten thousand years.

Actually, #3, there has been a lot of change in the last 10,000 years but the issue is: Was it driven by human activity? The climate has swung from the Younger Dryas (really cold) to the Holocene Optimum (warmest period since the end of the last Ice Age to cool to a Minoan warming to cool to a Roman warming (less warm than the Optimum) to cool to the Midieval warming (less warm than the Roman period) to the little ice age to the present warming (as yet, less warm than the Medieval Warming). It did all of this without an Industrial Revolution or SUVs. Trying to control that with insulation is... well.... you choose the word.

Masonry walls absorb moisture so they are built to have a cavity (gap) or flashing between the outer and inner walls to prevent moisture migration from the outer wall to the inner wall. Filling the cavity is obviously a poor idea.

My dear Brits, this is what happens when you drink the cool aid without at least asking questions first. Your houses are now rank with moulds and mildew. Who'd have thought such a thing could happen in a humid climate like yours. These problems will be very hard and expensive to fix. Good luck on this. Enjoy your new green deal.

I am just so glad that the engineer that lived in our house before we bought it never did this. We live in a very moist area of the US and while we have both cold and heat we would like to protect our home from, mold issues are a lot more serious than paying a bit more for utilities.

This insulation by blowing into the walls was popular in the 1950s when we had our new house constructed. It was a grey fluffy material blown in through a hose. Years later when an interior wall was removed it had all settled to the bottom not in the wall at all. In the deep south with much moisture from rainfall mold was the problem it didn't work then it still doesn't work. The 'green' hoax continues by these dingbats.

As building and remodeling contractors back in the 70s & 80s ,we were well aware of the problems caused by improper insulation as the walls need to 'breathe' to rid them of trapped moisture. Weren't the Brits paying attention to the news? There were thousands of lawsuits against builders, suppliers,installers-with settlements in the billions.

These never-paint-again outside coatings are bad for the house. Sure they don't allow water to penetrate from outside to inside but they also don't allow water that finds a way in to eventually evaporate. Rather it just sits in there and rots the wood. In an abnormal situation a hurricane blows water under the eves into the attic and drains into the walls. Years later it's still there. And for some strange reason the builder used galvanized steel conduit tubing for the house wiring. Open up an outlet and it's completely rust. The entire outlet box and the conduit tubing as far as I can see are entirely iron oxide.

As 2, 24 and others stated the house needs to allow moisture to migrate to the outdoors. The spray insulation acts as a moisture barrier and traps it between the interior wall and the insulation. The article wants to blame the situation on the moisture penetrating from the exterior and this may happen sometimes but I would think the problem in most cases is too much moisture on the inside which can't escape. Like one contractor stated--too many boiled potatoes.
