Mercedes-Benz’s latest hot car ad has caused Asian social media to blow up over ads featuring models sporting makeup that allegedly creates stereotypical “slanted eyes” which the Chinese find extremely offensive. The high-end German automaker removed the ad in deference to the Chinese from the social media network Weibo on Dec. 25 after a massive blowup over the “slanted eyes” issue.“Is there any beauty in this makeup?” one incensed critic wrote, according to the Global Times. “It is not [open for] interpretation. No Chinese will think this kind of ‘beauty’ is attractive,” another remarked. The Global Times, which is the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda outlet, claimed on Tuesday that the hashtag

Hmmm. So now 'slant eyes' don't exist? Uh.....last time I looked, they still do.

So are they supposed to make her look more 'western' to fit into the kind of ‘beauty’ that is attractive to Chinese?

People with "slanted eyes" are woke, too?

Did you folks at Mercedes have market demographic info of sales by race, color, creed, sexual persuasion showing the % of those allegedly offended and determine it was worth kneeling to the altar of PC or just cave at first blush and humble yourselves?

So, back to eye surgery to remove the normal Asian eye shape....which is often said to be 'slanted', or sometimes said to be 'almond shaped'? I always thought that this was a sad thing, surgery to change your look from the perfectly normal way that you were born.
Whatever....different, yes, good or bad, pretty/ugly? No, just different. Clearly the Chinese are obsessed with this eye thing which is real, visible, and undeniable. China is just as nutty as other places, clearly, just about different things.

Never mind that the Chinese spread a deadly pathogenic virus all over the world killing millions of people, let's talk about racist eye makeup.

Not as offensive as the MB ad featuring Che Guevara some years back. You know, because MB are rebels, for the people. That ad got pulled after some reactionary fascists complained, but that was then.
Now they pander to the Chinese, albeit clumsily. It's the thought - or ideology - that counts, right?

Every person in the ad is Asian. So where's the racism? The ad was made for the Asian market. I might be able to understand the so called outrage if many or all of the people in the ad were of some other nationality and makeup was used slant the eyes, but that's not the case in this ad. Get a life.

It would be offensive if the make-up was applied to make the eyes less slanted.
The ad actually accentuates the slanted eyes and frankly, I would take that as a compliment.
But then... I think about things.

Shouldn't their ads be like ours, with black men and white women, and a few gay guys added in for good measure?

The comments made by the model from the "Three Squirrels" ad (Cai Niang Niang) about the so-called cultural offense were thoughtful and insightful.
The offense, though, is artificial and really all about control. Every effort to allay offense will only aggravate it, resulting in complete paralysis.

The ad flashed by too fast and was too dark to see the car, ugly clothes, models, or their eyes. Unless you watch the ad in slow motion and focus on the models eyes, you will never see the models eyes. Even when I saw the models eyes, I still did not see what was so offensive.

Sounds to me like the perpetually 'offended' decided that they had some new thing to be 'offended' about.
This is all Bovine Scatology, just to try to make some gutless advertising executive cower and 'bend the knee' to the perpetually offended.

Okay, so it's in bad taste. There's a new Mercedes with slanted headlights -- kind of ugly to my mind, but meh!
So their ad agency uses a bunch of East Asian models and puts them in makeup that exaggerates the shapes of their eyes. Whose imbecilic idea was that?
Now the Chicoms are shocked -- shocked! ("Here are your winnings, Captain Renault." "Oh, thank you.")
(Yawn)
