While former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty, the other three officers at the scene when George Floyd died in police custody on May 25 face a trial this summer. The other former officers — J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao — are set to go to trial on Aug. 23, and it will be televised. The three are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Legal experts say Chauvin’s conviction on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter increases the likelihood that the other three

Susan Wright, the widow of the late congressman, and fellow Republican Jake Ellzey are running first and second in the all-party special House election in Texas, which would lock Democrats out of the runoff and end their most promising chance to expand their House majority this year.(Snip) The scenario would put a quick end to Democrats' hopes of challenging for the fast-diversifying 6th Congressional District outside Fort Worth. Democrats sensed opportunity in the district, which includes the Fort Worth suburbs and some rural and exurban counties to the southwest, one of many across the country where support for former President

Police departments across the state have been preparing for May Day for weeks. May 1 is known as International Workers Day, but in recent years the day has ended in cities like Portland with arrests, fires and destruction. Police departments like the Portland Police Bureau and the Salem Police Department put out statements ahead of the day as a warning for what could be seen in their cities. Local historians say destruction from recent May Days doesn't connect with the actual history of the day. "May Day means something. It’s a memorial in a way to those who lost their

President Biden sought to send the message this week that the nation is in a new phase of the pandemic when he strode away from a podium outside the White House without a mask after announcing guidance that the vaccinated no longer need face coverings when outdoors. But days later, Biden was spotted with a mask while walking outside to Marine One with first lady Jill Biden, even though both have been vaccinated and no others were around. The president again donned a mask at a Georgia drive-in rally while his wife spoke a few feet away, despite nobody else

A Colorado woman out walking her dogs died of a suspected bear attack, officials said. The 39-year-old woman was found Friday night by her boyfriend, who went searching for her when he discovered the two dogs alone outside their home in Durango, in southwestern Colorado, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a statement Saturday. He found her body around 9:30 p.m. local time off U.S. Highway 550 near Trimble, north of Durango, and called 911, officials said. The woman and her boyfriend haven't been publicly identified. Responding wildlife officers "observed signs of consumption on the body and an abundance

MINNEAPOLIS - Community activists delivered stacks of boxes Friday to the Minneapolis city clerk's office to file a petition to amend the city charter in order to replace the Minneapolis Police Department with a public safety department. Following the death of George Floyd, there's been a community push to defund or disband the Minneapolis Police Department. Activists say the petition is a step toward changing public safety and policing in the city. The 30 boxes now standing in the city clerk's office mark the first step of the process for a petition to amend the city charter. According to the clerk

President Joe Biden is again spending the weekend in Delaware, but just how he spends his days of leisure are shrouded in mystery. The White House has so far released very little information about what he does on Saturdays and Sundays, providing the public with scant details about whom he spends time or speaks to. When he arrived at his Wilmington residence Friday afternoon, it marked his seventh trip home as president as the country returns to some semblance of normal amid the coronavirus pandemic and a day after he cleared his 100th in office. Presidents never experience "a true

MANSFIELD, Texas — Adam Kinzinger came to Texas this week to hunt unicorns. The Illinois congressman was looking for Republicans who, like him, see former President Donald Trump as a scourge on their party and a threat to democracy. Kinzinger met privately with one sympathetic Republican, former President George W. Bush, on his first day in the state. And on the second, he had lunch with Michael Wood, the only openly anti-Trump Republican competing on Saturday in a crowded special election for a seat in Congress. Kinzinger, a 43-year-old Air Force pilot who flew missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, is positioning

MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors are asking a judge to give Derek Chauvin a more severe penalty than state guidelines call for when he is sentenced in June for George Floyd's death, arguing in court documents filed Friday that Floyd was particularly vulnerable and that Chauvin abused his authority as a police officer. Defense attorney Eric Nelson is opposing a tougher sentence, saying the state has failed to prove that those aggravating factors, among others, existed when Chauvin arrested Floyd on May 25. Chauvin, who is white, was convicted last week of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for pressing

Joe Biden’s administration, seeking deep cuts to planet-heating emissions, is facing pressure to take a previously unthinkable step: declare the end of the internal combustion engine in the US. Washington state has moved to call time on the age of gasoline and diesel cars, with the legislature passing a goal that new car sales be only zero-emission vehicles from 2030, including out of state purchases that are then imported. The legislation now awaits to signature of Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat who previously ran for president on the climate crisis platform. While not a strict mandate, the Washington bill is

Joe Biden clearly hasn't learned a thing from the failed and immoral War on Drugs - a disaster that he played a huge part in creating. The president on Thursday ordered the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban menthol cigarettes, a plan first reported on Wednesday by the Washington Post. Since it's a regulatory change, Congress has no say in the matter. (Snip) The ban will make menthol a prized commodity, a sought-after product whose artificial scarcity will inevitably drive up its price on non-legal markets. A flavor will now be a crime, making criminals out of people who want

The NYPD will return a robot dog after it was condemned for targeting 'low income communities of color' with the dystopian four-legged surveillance machine. John Miller, the NYPD's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, told the New York Daily News on Wednesday that the NYPD had cancelled its $94,000 contract with Boston Dynamics. Miller on Wednesday defended the metal canine, known as a DigiDog, from claims from critics like progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who called it a 'robotic surveillance ground drone'. 'Shout out to everyone who fought against community advocates who demanded these resources go to investments like school counseling
