A Milwaukee judge arrested for allegedly hiding an undocumented migrant from ICE has a sign on her courtroom offering Zoom hearings to those who 'felt unsafe' coming to court.
'If any attorney, witness coordinator, or other court official knows or believes that a person feels unsafe coming to the courthouse to courtroom 615, please notify the branch 31 clerk to request court appearance via ZOOM,' reads the sign on County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan's door.
It's not uncommon for judges to offer Zoom hearings for victims of violent crimes who fear facing their aggressors. But the sign is circulating online following Dugan's arrest Friday, which has sent waves across the political spectrum.

Mexico is calling on broadcasters to ban a series of Department of Homeland Security ads that feature Secretary Kristi Noem dissuading migrants from illegally crossing the border into the United States.
The ads, which aired during a Mexican soccer game, showed men being put in handcuffs and placed in police cars and migrants crossing the dangerous Rio Grande and scaling the border wall.
“If you are considering entering America illegally, don’t even think about it,” Noem said in the ad. “If you come to our country and you break our laws, we will hunt you down. Criminals are not welcome.”
Following the ad’s airing, a Mexican government agency released a statement

President Trump and first lady Melania will likely have a third-row seat to Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday, sandwiched between African dignitaries — and far away from Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky.
World leaders are expected to sit in alphabetical order according to the name of their country in French, in line with Vatican protocol that also dictated Pope John Paul II’s funeral in 2005. That puts the delegation from the US — which translates to États-Unis — after Ethiopia and before Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland.
Front row to the papal service, which begins Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, will be powerful archbishops, bishops and cardinals.

George Santos was weeping “crocodile tears” at his sentencing, a Navy veteran who previously accused the lyin’ ex-pol of stealing thousands meant for his sick dog claimed on Friday.
Disabled, formerly homeless vet Richard Osthoff showed up to federal court in Central Islip to see his nemesis get hit with a hefty prison sentence — even after he turned on the water works for the judge.
“That wasn’t real. He’s not remorseful. He’s crying because he knows that he’s getting bitten on the a-- and he’s gotta go away now,” Osthoff said, adding bitterly, “Have fun, George.”

The closure of two schools founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan has left the inner city families they were designed to help questioning how their children will achieve an education.
The New York Times reports that in a surprise announcement this week, The Primary School, a tuition-free educational institution founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, revealed that it would be closing its doors in the summer of 2026. The school, located in East Palo Alto, California, was established in 2016 with the mission of serving children from low-income families by providing them with access to education, health care, and social workers under one roof.

The state of Washington, which does not officially recognize Easter or Yom Kippur as state holidays, became the first state in the nation to recognize the two Islamic holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as unpaid state-recognized holidays when Democrat Governor Bob Ferguson signed the legislation into law this month.
“Senate Bill 5106, sponsored by Sen. Yasmin Trudeau (D-Tacoma), adds both Eid holidays to a list of 20 other state holidays. Rep. Osman Salahuddin (D-Redmond) sponsored the companion bill,” Ferguson’s website stated. “The new law does not establish Eid holidays as paid holidays, but rather adds them to the state’s list of recognized observances,

A new transparency report looking at a popular multibillion-dollar program in the Department of Labor has found a meager success rate, setting the stage for possible cuts amid the Trump administration's push to slash waste.
The Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration has released a detailed report investigating the financial performance and efficiency of the Jobs Corps Program, a federally funded residential career training and education program popular with unions and designed for eligible low-income young adults aged 16-24.
The report, which analyzed 124 job centers, looked into the definitions of what constitutes "graduating" from the program and found that the average graduation rate ranges from 32% to 38%,

A new bill in the Golden State would allow homeless community college and state university students to sleep in their cars during the blue state's housing crisis.
A Public Policy Institute of California report found California has among the lowest homeownership rates and the most expensive housing in the U.S., with rent about 50% higher than the national median.
The California bill seeks to provide a short-term solution to the state's decades-long housing strife.
Assemblymember Corey Jackson, a progressive California Democrat with a doctorate in social work, proposed a bill in March that would require the chancellors of the California state universities and the governing board of each community college

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem revealed in a podcast this week how her purse was snatched at a restaurant in Washington, D.C., describing it as "professionally done."
The purse was taken Sunday by a White man wearing a mask, and the bag contained $3,000 in cash as well as personal documents including her passport, keys, driver's license and a DHS badge, an agency spokesperson confirmed.
"It was kind of shocking, actually, because it was sitting right by my feet. I actually felt my purse, he hooked it with his foot and drug it a few steps away and dropped a coat over it and took it,"

Staffers from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency are building a master database to speed-up immigration enforcement and deportations by combining sensitive data from across the federal government, multiple sources familiar with the plans tell CNN.
The goal is to create a massive repository of data pulled from various agencies, according to sources familiar with the project who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to talk about it. The administration has previously sought to centralize information from a number of agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration and Health and Human Services, among others.

Former President Joe Biden, the nation’s second Catholic president, will attend Pope Francis‘s funeral this weekend in Rome.
“President Biden and Dr. Biden will attend Pope Francis’s funeral,” a Biden spokesperson confirmed to the Washington Examiner.
Biden did not attend the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in 2023, which occurred during his presidency. Benedict served as pope from 2005 through 2013, when he took the unusual step of becoming pope emeritus at 85.
Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will not attend the funeral.

“Immigration is not a problem for America to solve,” Andres told ABC News’s The View. “It’s an opportunity for America to seize. Actually, we should be celebrating because unemployment has been very low. This is good news.”
“Restaurant industry has a hard time finding workers, so we can keep opening restaurants and moving the economy forward, in urban America and rural America.”
More than restaurants, farmers are struggling to find people who can take care of the land, and immigrants play a “super important role,” according to Andres.
“Who do you think works the golf courses, taking care of the grass?” he asked.
