A group of 20 Republicans voted for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on the second day of voting for House speaker, denying House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) the gavel in the fourth ballot.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) nominated Donalds when the House came back in session at noon Wednesday.
“For the first time in history, there have been two black Americans placed into the nomination for speaker,” Roy said to a round of applause. He was also referring to the Democratic nominee, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

If McCarthy was really about the people, the party and not the position, he would step aside, open the floor for free discussion and debate … and then call for a vote without being on the ballot himself.

Do you know what the biggest word in the dictionary is. The word IF. I.e. IF grandma had b_ _ _ ‘s, she’d be grandpa. McCarthy has moved into the speakers office. IF, he was for the people he would step aside.

Conspiracy hat on...
Now that Cheney and Kinzinger are gone, who are the Never-Trumpers among the House Republicans? It may not be obvious. Remember, at one time both Cheney and Kinzinger were regarded as solid Conservatives. It only takes a few and it may not necessarily be McCarthy.

Always stupid showboating. I can't wait until the 'first' red, no-gender, iron lung bound, non-citizen member is elected to Speaker. The 'journalists' will have orgasms.

The GOP Congresspeople need to be spending this evening in a "come-to-Jesus" meeting. Either settle their differences with McCarthy and elect him or regroup behind another candidate -- Scalise, Donalds, or another true conservative.
I think McCarthy missed his chance when he either couldn't or didn't pressure Turtle McConnell to accept only a short term government funding bill and not the Omnibus bill which restricts the new GOP House from using their power of the purse until late this year.
You can point fingers all you want, but the reason the "red wave" didn't materialize rests squarely with the GOP Uniparty/RINO leadership, best exhibited by the Turtle. Hope he had a nice day with Sleepy Creepy Crooked President Uncle Joe.

Donalds is pretty new. I’m unaware that he has any accomplishments, other than verbal adroitness. Chip Roy sounded like a basic Democrat diversity acolyte when he nominated Donald’s. Anyone but McCarthy seems to be the one firm principle that Gaetz and his fellow bozos do hold.

These high school sophomore politicians impersonating elected representatives are going to cost the GOP the House. Not in the 2024 elections but this year, and SOON. There are going to be resignations coming out of this regardless of the outcome. WAY too much ill-will will be the cause of them.
Then, special elections to replace the ones who tossed their curls and walked away in a huff will be ignored by disgusted GOP voters and, BINGO, Hakeem Jeffries is the Speaker of a united Democrat House and Socialism runs amok.

Enough already people!
I don't care about "looks" or "appearances". I don't want another fake conservative "leading" the Republicans in the House. "Oh, Nos! We'll get Hakeem as Speaker...!!" Really? What's the difference if Kevin is going to line up with the Dims anyway? We won the House - let's act like it and get someone that represents conservatives instead of the go-along-to-get-along RINO.
Otherwise, what's the point of voting and winning if we give it away?

If I did not have faith in McCarthy I wouldn't vote for him either. Who cares what it looks like, if they really do not believe he will be a strong conservative leader then they are doing the right thing for the right reason. I don't trust McCarthy but then again there are not many in Washington I do trust.

Stupid Party playing Stupid Games. I know very little about Byron Donalds, but I know he was only recently elected. So no matter how good he is, he can't possibly be sufficiently experienced to be Speaker of the House. This is obviously a stunt to be able to say, "we're electing the first...whatever" instead of, "we have a better candidate". I actually do want someone other than McCarthy, but I'm sick of these stupid games. The entire political class is disgusting. Both parties.

a sterling selection because he is one of the most intelligent and savvy reps in the whole body and by all recollections faith and support for RINO McCarthy was not to be found in Lucianne.com News Forum and that is a pretty damn good indicator of general consensus, in my humble opinion
we can't give RINO McCarthy the job "just because", that's not how it works, it has to be on merit and loyalty to the People!!!

To the ones who say Donalds is a great choice, please tell me why. What are his positives for being the speaker? How do you know he’s a “true” conservative. The Republicans truly are the stupid party. It’s a good thing an election isn’t soon. You would never know they won the House. The only one I’d trust for Speaker would be Jordan who doesn’t want the job.

This is what irritates me. The SPEAKERSHIP should have been resolved in the republican caucus LOOOOONG before yesterday. They had almost two months to agree on a speaker. If the House Republicans can't agree on who will be the speaker with two months advance notice....frankly longer than that. Winning the house was a lock with that glorious red tsunami that was to crest on November 8th.
If the republicans are this disorganized now, and they had plenty of time to resolve this before yesterday, what faith should we have going forward that they will improve.
This is a complete failure on the part of the Republican leadership. They just assumed that everyone would fall into line, ala the democrats, and award it to the guy in line. Lest we forget the 5-minute revolt against the murder turtle, cocaine Mitch?
On these grounds alone, McCarthy should step aside.

McCarthy assumed he was a shoe-in prior to the election and ignored those who disagreed with him. All of this should have been worked out in the two months after the election. The core issue here is McCarthy's arrogance.

To answer #20's question, I will answer it with a question. Why is Kevin McCarthy a good choice for House Speaker? In the last two years, what has he done to speak up or stop the damage with the Biden/Harris administration?

McCarthy got last nights' vote stopped so that he could make deals with select Democrat members of the House. The logical thing for him to do is guarantee that he will prevent House investigations from leaving the committees and be presented on the House floor. That might even serve his personal needs. The majority of House members are not for the people and not for the country. Easy money and power overwhelm their loyalty to the constitution. Is McCarthy willing, or continue, to be held hostage to the syndicate?

Reply 25 is, I think, by far the most astute. Kevin McCarthy gave the Dems the Jan 6 Committee. Kevin McCarthy sided with the Dems about Trump immediately following Jan 6. Kevin McCarthy kissed a** for years for Paul Ryan, and continues to for despicable Mc Connell.
The so-called renegades are the only ones there who "deserve" (McCarthy") this vote.
And, I have no idea why Trump re-endorsed McCarthy yesterday, but, though I love and admire Trump, I have seen he has great weaknesses in deciding on political relationships. Reminds me in that way of LBJ.

It is clear that McCarthy lacks the intelligence for such an important position. His continued failure to negotiate with the holdouts tells me that he is either too much into the deep state or he has already made deals with the Democrats to push their agenda.

Let me see if I can wrap my head around this. Congress has an approval rating somewhere between getting staked naked to the ground over a red ant hill and syphilis, and the only significant challenge to the status quo comes from a small cadre of republicans and we don't want them to rock the boat?

If you want unending and limitless aid sent to Ukraine then go ahead and support McCarthy and his cronies: Michael Waltz, Scalise, etc. Not sure how many of the holdouts did NOT vote for more aid too Ukraine , but McCarthy and Co. can talk all they want about spending, etc when they go right along and wear their little Ukraine lapel pins and vote again and again for Ukraine. Hello - how about the USA?

Before the Red Tsunami that turned into a tinkle in the dirt, many LDotters proclaimed their belief that the stupid party would screw things up and turn a win into a loss. Here ya go. Anybody who couldn't win both the Senate and the House by tearing the Biden Administration's performance into shreds does not deserve to govern. The election cheating that put most vulnerable democrats over the top should have been fixed long ago.

Taking a step outside the box, I would suggest that GOP drop McCarthy and nominate incoming Conngressman Zinke from Montana. He has served before and was elected to a new term after being out to serve Trump as Sec of the Interior. He is former SEAL Commander and a proven leader. Back in 2017, the GOP could not get anyone to step up and take the Speaker position (Paul Ryan reluctantly agreed to do so eventually), Zinke had volunteered to do the job, figuring "somebody has to do it." Zinke has been volunteering to do the jobs that very few men will do. He has the leadership skills, the presence of being to pull this off. If Jorden will not step up, Zinke is a good choice and he may actually agree to do the job. He probably knows where skeletons are buried all over Washington, DC, (and around the world). I would bet he would be intimidating as Speaker. And as for being in line to the presidency in case of emergency, he would be well prepared. I nominate Zinke.

This revolt against McCarthy is all about money. (Isn't it always, the love of money, the root of all evil) The 1.7 Trillion Dollar Omnibus Budget was the last straw. McCarthy didn't do anything to stop that monstrosity. And McCarthy won't agree to reducing/cutting any $$$$ from future budgets so therefore, the fight for leadership!

Waa waa waa -- poor little babies. In this Republic the majority wins. They were outvoted 10 to 1.
How about standing up for the party and bring up your bills before the whole house like it is intended instead of holding anyone hostage with kindergarten tactics.
They acting like Pelosi Dems except they are not united or uniting. They do not like McCarthy, and don't have the guts to say it out loud.

McCarthy's problems are due to:
+ history (useless "Republican" Speakers, Hastert, Boehner, and Paul Ryan)
+ his own actions (making a deal with Trump to get his endorsement, then breaking it within 24 hours, causing Trump to withdraw his endorsement) and
+ his own inactions (a REAL politician running for Speaker would have been lining up votes as soon as the results were final, making deals to get enough votes for speaker, then spending the remaining time planning his first legislative actions).
At this point, if I were ANY of the Republican Congresspeople (even one voting for him), I would not trust ANY promises made to me by McCarthy.

For all the complaining that has gone on here about the lack of Republican leadership, bending over for the Dems, unconservative values, yada, yada, yada... I find it confounding the number of posters now complaining about a handful of Republicans not rallying behind more of the same-Kevin McCarthy. While confessing no knowledge about Rep. Donalds, its less about him and more about a few brave Republicans looking for something beyond a bend over the aisle, nudge nudge wink wink business as usual approach which the in the minority Republicans have turned into an art form. We now have a majority which however slim, the Dems would proclaim as a mandate and unfortunately, McCarthy hasn't shown a history of grabbing anything by the horns to make people believe that he would change any of that.

Whatever the outcome and who ever is speaker we better see some results - hearings, impeachment, spending cuts, less migrants - border closure, no more mandatory mask or lockdowns, no more money to Ukraine - let the EU pay, no more omnibus bills, inventory of Fort Knox, budget accountability, voting machines (Dominion Machines trash), voter ID and improvements, on time budgets that can be read and analyzed, to name a few
