Aren't CAFE standards wonderful?

Absolutely no information provided on how the accident occurred. For this to happen someone had to make a mistake. The article said no one was charged which does tell me something. Jamming six teenagers into a clown car with an inexperienced driver is an accident waiting to happen. Apparently they don’t teach safety in drivers ed there.

The truck driver must be devastated. I had a little brother die after he ran in front of a dump truck. Nothing the driver could have done; he ended up in psychological care. I hope the girls were having so much fun that they didn't see it coming.

Teenage drivers are by definition inexperienced. Oklahoma should enact laws requiring graduated drivers licenses. No teen should be allowed to drive with other teens without an adult present. Certainly not before they are 18 years-old. The matter of driving a tin can unable to protect anyone in an accident especially without seatbelts will haunt their parents till the day they die. Yes, the mercy is that these children probably 'didn't see it coming'.

it is a really oddball, convoluted intersection where city streets, old highway/new highway all crisscross, it looks like she took a right turn right into the oncoming semi, if there was a taller girl in the passenger seat, or two people there...teen girls w/music blasting....they never saw it coming.

Took a road trip 2 or 3 years ago and traveled in this area. It is just a super small town with the basics. Looked like a place with hard working friendly people. The biggest thing there is Blake Shelton's restaurant. This is such a sad blow for this close community. Prayers for the families.

I can almost see the activity in that small car as it was going down the road with six teenage girls in it. Music blaring, girls dancing in the seat to the music. Everyone screaming to be heard over the music and each other. Then before they knew it, it was over. My guess the driver may have had a hard time controlling that small car with five other people in it and crossed the center line. Just a guess, but like I said, I can see it.

Very sorry to hear about this lamentable loss of life.
But who lets their kids do this? Frankly, kids in that age range are usually somewhere between barely competent and dangerous behind the wheel, so the fewer "eggs in one basket" the better. I have read multiple similar stories over the years of 4 to 5 to 6 girls in this age range out driving around when the incompetent at the wheel, most likely distracted by her friends rather than paying attention to her driving manages to make a deadly error, and kill most or all of them. It's very sad, but parents should prevent these sort of driving situations. Drive the kids yourself, or insist that they have only one friend in the car, minimizing inevitable distractions.
And a wonder at modern parents.....who names their child "Memory"? Odd names seems to be all too common. But, it's a shame that this happened, regardless of names.

The girls were packed into a 4 passenger car. The semi had to be hauling. Girls going north; semi going south. It is believed the girls suddenly decided to make what amounted to a U-turn. Semi slammed into them.
I don’t understand the “watermelons” in #1.

My impression: This is the “boonies” - the wide open middle of nowhere. They made a big mistake on a wide open highway where semis make time on their long hauls. If a semi has a fully loaded trailer, it takes a long, long distance for them to come to a stop. Smart people don’t try to make fast moves around semis. One of the advantages of growing up in Southern California was our experience from the get go on high speed parkways and then interstate freeways. R E S P E C T….

A sad story no matter how it shakes out.
Ref#10 Watermelon, red on the inside green out.. Consider it in that context. CAFE the force that government uses to force cars smaller to meet fuel standards.

Continue #12.. Sorry, spouse called me away.
So if the greenies hadn't taken over the choices in cars we once had perhaps the damage wouldn't have been as great in a heavier car with todays safety.. much less the greater room that might have dealt with 6 kids.
An old Ford might have simply bruised a few kids.

Re #13, and others. "Old cars" weren't nearly as tough as many think.
Here's a crash test, head on, 50% offset between an "tough old tank" 1959 Chevy versus a "egg shell, flimsy modern" 2009 Chevy Malibu. You might be surprised, I was.
