A new poll suggests that actor Matthew McConaughey could defeat either incumbent Republican Greg Abbott or Democrat hopeful Beto O'Rourke in a race for the Texas governor's office. The poll from the University of Texas and Dallas Morning News found that McConaughey is preferred in both one-on-one matchups, but that Abbott would win in a three-way race. McConaughey, who lives in Austin, has teased a run for governor for months but has not said whether he would make one as a Republican or a Democrat. The 52-year-old Oscar-winning actor keeps his political views close to the vest, but his prior remarks suggest that he is moderate to conservative-leaning.

I like Matthew McCon-A-Hotty in movies. He doesn't want the colonoscopy a governor's race would bring him and I hope Texans won't fall for a pretty face with no policy history. He certainly would not win the Republican primary because there are already many serious candidates in the race.

Hollywood actor with "unknown" political leanings? Sort of like... RINO Governator Arnold "I Married A Kennedy" Schwartzenegger?

Mathew McConaughey? Get real. What the hell does a movie action know about running a state? You can be sure he'll run it into debt and destruction.

Abbott owns this mishap. He allowed the border open instead of placing the national guard there and asking other governors for help. Abbott needs to get his act together.

One problem is that some people actually believe actors are like the characters they play. They are not. He is not the Lincoln Lawyer; he is an actor who pretends to be a character written by someone else. He gets paid to act like someone else so he may just be acting like a good guy. Just stop with the idol worship. Go with the one you know.

He is no front runner with anyone I know ! A lot of Democrats may like him over Beto but no way is this actor ready for such a job!
I pray that enough Republican voters wake up and realize we have got to have a courageous Governor in Austin as soon as possible. Abbott was a fine chief exec when times were easy. Texas is now in crisis and we have to switch gears quick. I sure pray Republicans go against our pattern of just sticking with a weak incumbent. West4Texas !

Yeah, a poll by UT and the Dallas Morning News means the population sample was from on campus wankers and the disaffected in the Metroplex.
Other than that, #9 is right. Anyone remember all the great conservative bills passed this legislative session? In case you forgot I can send you list which was sent out by my state senator in her once every two year newsletter. All of that was window dressing which failed to address the border, the power grid (except for more wind turbines), and the governor's and county judges unbridled powers during emergencies. You know, the important stuff. BTW guv, those blacked out buses are still headed north and our DPS and you do nothing.

I know MM, and, more importantly, his older brother (down to the cigarillo brand he smokes) extremely well and have done business with both. Drank more than a little tequila with both.
MM is a nice guy, libertarian tendencies, but grossly, grossly misinformed of the basic facts.
So much of what he things are true just "are not so" to paraphrase Ronald Reagan.

I was curious about his acting work so just took a quick look at his IMDb page. His most recent project was as a voice artist on "Sing 2", a 2021 animated film. Prior to that, nothing of any importance over the last few years. No mention of films in editing or roles upcoming. Maybe he's losing his market value in entertainment, and is restless enough to try something new that garners lots of attention.
We shall see, but I'd prefer that a big film offer suddenly comes his way to keep him out of politics.

Poll is probably correct right now, but people aren't voting right now. So while the movie star may be a neat choice for governor leading up to the actual election, when it comes time to vote, McConaughey probably won't even be running. He's living a charmed life as a movie star. Why would anyone give that up to become a politician with all the hassles that go along with it.

If true, it only reflects the power of name recognition not support for policies presented. No one really knows what Mr. McConaughey would advocate.

Abbott has his problems. McConaughey has his. In a Republican primary, Abbott would beat McConaughey but for Allen West appealing to "conservatives" who would otherwise support the governor. This could bring about a run-off if no one gets a majority - and Texas is an open primary state. In a run-off the Dems could vote, too. In a general, one-on-one, McConaughey as a "moderate Democrat" could win...don't kid yourselves.
