In one of his first moves after surviving the recall, Gov. Gavin Newsom took his boldest steps yet to fix California’s housing shortage by signing a package of bills that will transform the state by getting rid of single-family zoning and making it easier to build the housing the state so desperately needs. Of the three housing bills Newsom signed Thursday, the most consequential is Senate Bill 9 because it will allow up to four units of housing on a single-family lot. Another, Senate Bill 10, creates a voluntary program that makes it easier for cities to upzone any urban

When President Joe Biden visited Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, he promised a key form of federal aid to those dealing with the lingering effects of the storm, but weeks after landfall getting that financial help has been easier said than done. The money would go straight into survivors' bank accounts "so that they can deal immediately with emergencies," Biden said Sept. 3. (Snip) But weeks after the storm, getting access to those items is still a challenge, and has left some residents who say they have urgent needs confused about why they have not received the federal

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the Less is More Act into law Friday, giving more leniency to parolees. “New York State incarcerates more people for parole violations than anywhere in the country. That is a point of shame for us, and it needs to be fixed. It’s going to be fixed today,” Hochul said. (Snip) Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin and state Assembly member Phara Souffrant Forrest, who co-sponsored the bill, celebrated its signing, along with other elected officials and criminal justice reform advocates. “When women rule, how things can change, how we can find compassion and understanding and

Earlier this month, President Biden signed an executive order with a lofty goal: he wants over half of all vehicle sales to be electric vehicles by 2030. The CEOs of GM (GM), Ford (F), and Stellantis (STLA) attended the White House event and threw their support behind the measure, pledging to put billions of dollars into manufacturing EVs and to work with Democrats to have American workers produce them. “There’s no turning back. The question is will we lead or fall behind in the race for the future,” Biden said on Aug. 5. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D., Mich.), who represents

It’s a startling beginning of an obituary announcing the passing of Candace Cay Ayers from complications of severe COVID-19. “She was preceded in death by more than 4,531,799 others infected with covid-19. She was vaccinated but was infected by others who chose not to be. The cost was her life,” it reads. The Springfield, Illinois, mother was 66 and received her second shot of the Moderna vaccine in March, said Marc Ayers, her son. But the family believes she caught the breakthrough infection in July after visiting an unvaccinated friend in Mississippi. Her condition deteriorated quickly and she died on

The Minnesota House Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) caucus voted Tuesday night to expel state Representative John Thompson, who has been embroiled in controversies over the summer. The expulsion means the Democrat won't have access to DFL legislative staff or resources and will be stripped of his committee assignments. However, he will remain a state representative, as it would take a vote of the entire House to remove him, and retain salary and benefits unless he resigns or is expelled from the Legislature. Lawmakers from both parties and Democratic Governor Tim Walz have called for Thompson to step down, but he has repeatedly

A manhunt for suspects was underway in Wisconsin this week after four adults from neighboring Minnesota were found dead inside an SUV in a cornfield over the weekend, according to reports. Almost half of VA hospitalized COVID-19 cases across the United States have been asymptomatic or mild, according to a new study from researchers at Harvard Medical School, Tufts Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The new study examined record from almost 50,000 COVID-19 hospital admissions to more than 100 VA hospitals across America. The researchers found that in the pre-vaccination, pre-Delta variant era of the pandemic, from March 2020 to January 2021, 36% of hospitalized patients had a mild or asymptomatic infection. From January 2021 to the end of June 2021, however, the proportion rose to 48%.

Alexander Vindman said that General Mark Milley should resign if some stunning new reporting is true. An upcoming book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa says the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff took some pretty drastic measures over his concerns about how erratic and unhinged then-President Donald Trump acted after the 2020 election. Milley allegedly took steps to prevent Trump from using nuclear weapons, and apparently he was so worried about Trump starting a war with China that he called his counterpart in China. Per the Washington Post: Twice in the final months of the Trump administration, the

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., sent a letter to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy demanding that Amazon use its algorithm to throttle the sale of books she characterized as spreading "COVID-19 misinformation." After pulling up search results on Amazon for various COVID-19 and vaccine-related terms, Warren's team claimed many of the books that came up were "based on falsehoods about COVID-19 vaccines and cures, including those written by the most prominent spreaders of misinformation." "This pattern and practice of misbehavior suggests that Amazon is either unwilling or unable to modify its business practices to prevent the spread of falsehoods or the sale

New Zealand prime minister announced that Auckland will remain under a strict lockdown for at least another week to curb the spread of highly infectious Delta variant of coronavirus. Jacinda Ardern told reporters on Monday that the country’s largest city, Auckland, will remain in strict alert 4 level lockdown until 21 September. The Prime Minister said that after that, the city will move to alert level 3, which means that the curbs will be eased slightly but offices, schools and public venues would still stay shut. She said that even though there was no widespread transmission in Auckland or the

"Many, many more mandates" will come on top of the Biden administrations' new vaccine restrictions, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday. Fauci predicted that colleges, universities, and businesses are likely to start imposing vaccine mandates, he told CNN's Jen Christensen at a panel organized by NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists on Sunday. "And I believe that's going to turn this around because I don't think people are going to want to not go to work, or not go to college, or not go to university," he said. However, he said he did not expect more "centrally-derived mandates" to be on
