The long concert career of singer Tony Bennett is finally finished after 70 years.
Bennett’s son, Danny Bennett, his manager for more than 40 years, canceled his remaining tour dates on Thursday. He said on Friday that Bennett’s two recent dates with Lady Gaga at New York’s Radio City Music Hall would be his last.
Earlier this year, Bennett’s family revealed that the 19-time Grammy-winner was diagnosed with dementia in 2016.
The younger Bennett cited doctor’s orders as the reason, although acknowledging his father was still capable of performing at age 95. The move has been made to avoid any falls or other onstage mishaps,
Bye. Encourage Lunchbox Joe to do the same.
I would have liked him better if he sang and didn't talk about politics.

Great singer. Sadly, also a rabid lie-beral.
Hopefully he will find some peace in whatever time he has left.

1951...14 years old... fell hopelessly in love...cried myself to sleep night after night listening to "Because of You" when I was dumped. Still tear up when I hear it and the bittersweet memories it invokes. Years have not erased that first love. He will always live within my heart.

Watching Pat Boone every day on TV, selling whatever it is he takes to make himself look so great (hahahaha) takes away all of the memories I have of him in when he was a STAR! Joe Namath is another one. PULEEEZE! We loved you in your Glory Days, but the Jig is up. I think all of those Senior performers should do what the rest of us Seniors do, which is, enjoy the Winter of your life and age gracefully! They don't look any better at 80 or 90 than the rest of us at that age, but they just THINK they do, so they go out and sell stuff we don't want to make money they don't need. I think it's sad!

My dad is 96, and still mentally sharp, but I know he wouldn't try to do things he did 30 years ago. Neither do I, for that matter!

Sounds like he may have health problems. Most people won't cancel doing what they love unless they don't feel they can give it their best.
Prayers for Tony and his family.

He is in very frail condition. We saw a Daily Mail spread on his concert with Lady Gaga… He looked lost and had to be guided/supported by others.

Re #10, the article intro tells us that he was diagnosed with dementia in 2016. That’s a very debilitating, progressive condition.

Hit submit too soon.
Tony Bennett was more than a “one hit wonder”. For years he performed and recorded wonderful music.
It is unfortunate when performers spoil their careers and diminish their fan bases by become political.

A personal anecdote…back in the late 60’s my father lived in the same building as Bennett on East 68th street in NYC. Once, as we were walking through the lobby, my father said, “Look! There’s Tony Bennett!” To which my 14 year old self replied, “Who’s Tony Bennett?” Much to my father’s chagrin and embarrassment, Bennett heard me, but he just smiled and continued on to the elevators.
Sorry about his dementia. My sister in law is in the late stages of early onset Alzheimer’s and it’s a terrible thing for her and, especially for the rest of the family, as we are aware of what is happening and she no longer is.

Several of the posters are describing symptoms decidedly similar to Biteme's don't you think?

I cannot enjoy his music because of his leftist views.

Sad to hear, but not surprising. Nobody lasts forever. He's in the final leg of a good long life. We should all be so lucky.

I was living in NYC for a work assignment in spring of ‘83 or ‘84? Can’t remember. Anyway, one day i was on Central Park South and noticed a buzz in the crowd - looked ahead to see Tony Bennet with a female companion, walking down the sidewalk. He had that perpetual smile on his face, head held high; she had brilliant red hair, and they were both dressed in all white. Quite a spectacular sight haha, as they were loving the attention they sought! Just an image i will never forget. My husband and I saw him perform in the 90s twice; I am more of a Sinatra fan but we did enjoy him. Thought he was at the end of his career back then!!
Dementia is a sad thing.
I pray for his salvation. Never too late

The stage, for all its glamor, is a dangerous place. Blinding light next to full on black, no railings, an aptly named orchestra pit, plus any number of mechanisms - AND you have to concentrate on your performance. This is an overdue and wise decision. Possibly not Tony's own, but charitable.
