Most celebrity gossip doesn’t live up to the hype. But there are a handful of people who have lived such colorful and improbable lives that, when presented with an absurd story about them, the best thing to do is assume it’s true.Did Bill Murray crash a White House press briefing to talk about the Chicago Cubs? Of course he did. Did Nicolas Cage really name his son Kal-El? Absolutely. Did Thomas Sowell once rent a helicopter with Steven Pinker to go on a "photo safari" of the San Francisco Bay Area? You’d better believe it. Sowell, the noted economist and social thinker, has had quite the career.

If you haven’t read any of Sowell’s many books, I encourage you to do so. He has a wonderful ability to distill seemingly complex problems into clear and concise language. He is an American treasure.

I’d bet you that not one single black person at all of the George Floyd riots and memorials has a clue who Thomas Sowell is. He is the kind of man who should be one of their role models, not gangstas, druggies and thugs.

As the rare, if not only conservative in my graduate school, I was only able to cite two conservative authors in the many papers students were required to write and I do mean write. For some reason, even in the early '90s, when Microsoft Word and Lotus Notes were already ubiquitous on desktop computers everywhere, our papers had to be hand written. Laptops were fairly rare in '91-'91, as a good one was a bit pricey and I assumed the hand written requirement was because it's hard to "cut and paste" when you are writing longhand, and the professors wanted you to synthesize and not plagiarize the key concepts and ideas from whomever you were citing. In any event Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams were acceptable authors and as I delved deeper into their scholarly works, which had to be accessed through hard-bound journals, reserved in a traditional library. Newspaper citations were discouraged as being non-scholarly. It became apparent that what Sowell is to social science, Walter Williams is to economics, although each has some cross-over, as do the fields of study. As our country approached going off the deep end for the Clintons, I often thought that Sowell should have run for office as a Republican, even though politics tends to damage its practitioners. In addition to world-class scholarship, Sowell (and Williams) was/is the epitome of "good horse sense."

Excellent! commentary, Geoman. Fortunately for you your exposure to Sowell and Williams came a decade before mine. I have to hope that your paper was judged by your professor on the content of its scholarship and not on the philosophy of its author.

Thomas Sowell first grabbed my attention some time in the 80s, when I read a most intelligently reasoned commentary in the Jacksonville, Fla newspaper. I had to find out who this brilliant man was, this Thomas Sowell.
If you haven't read his "Basic Economics" you are really missing out, even if you think you understand economics, it is a well written, wonderful look at how prices, free markets and the economic system that the USA used to have, makes thing really work the best that they can.
Truly a great man, along with Walter Williams. I always laugh when the insane left yells "racist" at me, since perhaps THE two best economic thinkers I know of and respect are black men.
