The catalytic converter theft crime wave that's been sweeping America may be even worse than it seems. A new report from CarFax estimates that 153,000 of the emissions control devices were stolen in 2022, based on repair records. That's higher than some previous estimates and the situation doesn't appear to be improving. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the number of thefts increased 1,215% from 2019 through 2022. Thieves are going after catalytic converters because of the valuable materials used in their construction, including platinum, palladium and rhodium. They're also relatively easy to steal, the process taking little more

Comments:

The penalty for this thievery is too lenient (like everything else).

How many thieves were caught, prosecuted, and jailed? How many of those have Democrats let out of jail?

I say any crime that robs someone of the use of their vehicle (and their ability to make a livelihood) is akin to horse thievery and we have a long history of hanging horse thieves from the nearest tree in this country! Ds's Mitsubishi Outlander Sport had it's CC stolen when he was in trade school. Repairs dept of the dealership said it takes all of 3 mins and saws-all to commit the crime. It took them 9 month for an OEM CC to come in from the manufacturer but after 4 months of waiting (and ds driving my mom mobile) we just took his ride to a local shop and had a generic CC put on for a quarter of the price. The thieves want nothing to do with the generics it seems and it works just as well.

I watched a security cam video of a Prius getting the CC stolen. The guy with the saw was under the car for 28 seconds. The whole operation took less than 90 seconds. It looked like a NASCAR pit crew at work. My neighbor is still waiting for a replacement. He got lifted in a hotel parking lot.

I think the "drive over the thief" approach has been proving in actual field testing to work extremely well.

This was a 'thing' about 12 -14 years ago (I sold exhaust systems for commercial vehicles at the time - it was a banner couple years there for me!). Then they instituted ID verification for anyone turning in CCs for recycling. Same thing, the metals inside were of good value. The Ids stopped it then. What happened since to turn it back on?

If you live in the Bay Area and your natural gas-powered water heater stops working after 2027, you will be required to install an electric model instead. Bay Area regulators voted Wednesday to adopt rules to phase out the sale and installation of natural-gas furnaces and water heaters over the next eight years, one of the most ambitious plans in the country to replace gas appliances with electric alternatives. The rules, approved by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, are meant to reduce air pollution from some of the worst home-appliance offenders. The main pollutants targeted are nitrogen oxides

"But then we have about a thousand other folks, who've been here, anywhere from a week to two months, and those are the folks that we're really trying to help get resettled in Denver." There has been some recent media buzz, as well as hope, about the possibility that former First Lady Michelle Obama might be persuaded to enter the 2024 presidential race. While that prospect is very unlikely – she has always rebuffed any notion that she might run for office – the enthusiasm is understandable. As the Democratic presidential nominee, or even the vice-presidential nominee, she would give Democrats their best chance at retaining the White House. President Joe Biden apparently revealed a detail about Jimmy Carter’s funeral Monday, saying the former president asked him to “do his eulogy.” “I spent time with Jimmy Carter and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” Biden said during remarks at a reception for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in California. “He asked me to do his eulogy. Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that,” Biden added. Carter, who is 98-years-old, decided to enter hospice care in mid February after a

San Francisco residents lined up at a city board meeting last night to share their full-throated support of a wide-eyed reparations plan that would award every black resident $5million, wipe their personal debt, guarantee $97,000 incomes for 250 years and $1 homes. But no one at the emotional meeting - where residents burst into song and begged to be made 'whole' - asked how the struggling, debt-addled city might pay for it. Reparations are being considered in various Democratic cities around America as a means of providing compensation to the descendants of enslaved African-Americans.

After months of near-silence and innuendo, Florida Gov. and GOP presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis decided to speak about Ukraine, removing all doubt about his position. While his statement on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show makes a handful of valid points, it is ridden with a fundamental misunderstanding of the war and US geopolitical interests. First, the good. DeSantis is correct to criticize the Biden administration’s lack of clear objectives in its support for “as long as it takes,” which is a recipe for a long and intractable conflict — which Americans would be right to reject.

The City Council of Washington, D.C., recently approved legislation to reduce penalties for violent crimes, despite a recent surge of murders, carjackings, and robberies in the city. It was in keeping with similar measures approved in recent years in cities around the country to defund the police, reduce cash bail, and eliminate penalties for minor crimes like shoplifting and drug possession. Congress rightly overruled the measure under the city's home rule charter, but it was a sign of what's to come from D.C. city government.

Some electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are scrapping the AM radio from their cars, claiming safety concerns. Although conservative talk radio dominates AM radio ratings, it is also considered a critical safety tool, as it is one of the primary ways that federal, state, and local officials communicate with the public during natural disasters and other emergencies. Automakers such as Ford and Tesla have ditched the AM radio from their newer EV models, arguing that the motors on EVs interfere with AM frequencies, creating buzzing and signal fading, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
