If you live in the Bay Area and your natural gas-powered water heater stops working after 2027, you will be required to install an electric model instead. Bay Area regulators voted Wednesday to adopt rules to phase out the sale and installation of natural-gas furnaces and water heaters over the next eight years, one of the most ambitious plans in the country to replace gas appliances with electric alternatives. The rules, approved by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, are meant to reduce air pollution from some of the worst home-appliance offenders. The main pollutants targeted are nitrogen oxides

Nonprofits like American Friends Service Committee continue helping migrants as they come into the city. "Right now, we get about 30 new people," said Jennifer Piper, the program director of the Colorado office of the American Friends Service Committee. "But then we have about a thousand other folks, who've been here, anywhere from a week to two months, and those are the folks that we're really trying to help get resettled in Denver." (Snip) However, the concern is whether those numbers will creep up again, considering the activity happening at the southern border. On Sunday, a large migrant group rushed

The catalytic converter theft crime wave that's been sweeping America may be even worse than it seems. A new report from CarFax estimates that 153,000 of the emissions control devices were stolen in 2022, based on repair records. That's higher than some previous estimates and the situation doesn't appear to be improving. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the number of thefts increased 1,215% from 2019 through 2022. Thieves are going after catalytic converters because of the valuable materials used in their construction, including platinum, palladium and rhodium. They're also relatively easy to steal, the process taking little more

There has been some recent media buzz, as well as hope, about the possibility that former First Lady Michelle Obama might be persuaded to enter the 2024 presidential race. While that prospect is very unlikely – she has always rebuffed any notion that she might run for office – the enthusiasm is understandable. As the Democratic presidential nominee, or even the vice-presidential nominee, she would give Democrats their best chance at retaining the White House. (Snip) The majority of voters don’t want the 80-year-old Biden to run again, including a solid majority (57 percent) of Democratic voters. And that majority

President Joe Biden apparently revealed a detail about Jimmy Carter’s funeral Monday, saying the former president asked him to “do his eulogy.” “I spent time with Jimmy Carter and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” Biden said during remarks at a reception for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in California. “He asked me to do his eulogy. Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that,” Biden added. Carter, who is 98-years-old, decided to enter hospice care in mid February after a

Joe Biden is making his first appearance on The Daily Show since taking office as the president of the United States — and weighing in on attacks against LGBTQ+ Americans — sitting down with actor and former Obama administration staffer Kal Penn for a segment airing Monday night. (Snip) The president continues: "I turned and looked at my dad, and he said, 'Joey, it's simple, they love each other.' ... It's just that simple. It doesn't matter whether it's same-sex or a heterosexual couple, you should be able to be married. What is the problem?" Biden made history as the vice president in

Inflation rose in February but was in line with expectations, providing a key input into whether the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates. The consumer price index increased 0.4% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 6%, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. Both readings were exactly in line with Dow Jones estimates. (Snip) A decrease in energy costs helped keep the headline CPI reading in check. The sector fell 0.6% for the month, bringing the year-over-year increase down to 5.2%. Food prices rose 0.4% and 9.5% respectively. Shelter costs, which make up about one-third of the index’s

President Biden on Monday blamed the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and closure of Signature Bank on former President Trump's 2018 decision to scrap some Obama-era banking regulations. "Unfortunately, the last administration rolled back regulations," Biden said. Biden also offered assurances that the U.S. banking system is "safe and secure." "Americans can have confidence that the banking system is safe," Biden said in remarks at the White House before leaving for a three-day visit to California and Nevada. The president said he planned to ask Congress and bank regulators to restore Obama-era rules that were put in place to prevent

A pair of climate activists in Scotland will face trial after allegedly vandalizing a display case holding national hero William Wallace’s broadsword. "The police say the accused believe they were raising awareness of climate change and that their actions were necessary for the cause," prosecutor Eilidh Smith said. Alexander Cloudley, 29 and Katrielle Chan, 21, both from Glasgow, pleaded not guilty to vandalism in Stirling Sheriff Court last week. They allegedly damaged and spray-painted the case holding Wallace of "Braveheart" fame’s sword. They each face a single charge alleging that, on March 2, they entered the National Wallace Monument and

Elizabeth Warren has called twice to apologize. Over a month later, Kamala Harris hasn’t called back. In a local Boston radio interview in late January, Warren was enthusiastic about President Joe Biden running for reelection but, asked if Biden should keep Harris as his running mate, she said, “I really want to defer to what makes Biden comfortable on his team.” (Snip) But the Warren moment is infuriating many in Harris’s circle: To them, it’s the latest in a long string of snubs to a vice president whom they say has never gotten the respect or support she deserves.CORRECTION*

PORTLAND, Ore. – In the last decade, gender pronouns have become a much more common sight to see and hear – both in social media profiles, in their email signatures, on patches and pins, and when they introduce themselves. As the fight for LGBTQ+ equality and rights continues, many people, including celebrities like Sam Smith and Demi Lovato, have publicly announced that they’re non-binary and use they/them pronouns. (Snip) People can also use non-gendered or gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them, ze/zir, ze/hir, xe/xem, fe/fem, ey/em, co/co, or per/per. Some of these, such as ze/sem and fe/fem, are known as neo

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bud Grant, the stoic and demanding Hall of Fame coach who took the Minnesota Vikings and their mighty Purple People Eaters defense to four Super Bowls in eight years and lost all of them, died Saturday. He was 95. The Vikings announced Grant's death on social media. (Snip) Wearing his trademark purple Vikings cap and a stone-faced demeanor, Grant’s steely sideline gaze became synonymous with his teams. He was a mainstay among coaches of his era, a decorated group that included Don Shula, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, John Madden and Hank Stram. Grant, however, had little interest in
