Opinion: The police who killed Tyre Nichols
were Black. But they might still have
been driven by racism

Three decades ago, when four White Los Angeles police officers were videotaped beating Rodney King, the public outcry was heard around the world. In fact, I got arrested for the first time in my life during protests that followed. And I subsequently dedicated my career as a lawyer to helping to sue rogue cops, close prisons and reform the criminal justice system. (Snip) How do we explain Nichols’ horrific killing, allegedly at the hands of police who looked like him?

Jones has decided that Black on Black crime must be nuanced racism. It is a theory that makes no sense on many levels but it seems convenient. That has nothing to do with what happened in Memphis. That was not racism, it was police brutality. Those cops will justifiably pay the price. And #5, sorry, non-compliance does not give the cops license to kill you unless you have a weapon. If Jones has bothered to watch the numerous videos of shoplifting and looting there is obviously a pattern going on related to race. The shop owner suspicion is justified. Face the truth. The White Antifa have rich Daddies.

Van Jones can't quit the "racism" cudgel. And he himself is a saint if he dares say so himself. But though most of this essay is sanctimonious drivel and sophistry, along the way he offers some interesting morsels: But the narrative “White cop kills unarmed Black man” should never have been the sole lens through which we attempted to understand police abuse and misconduct. [. . . .] The key to reducing the incidence of police violence is stricter oversight and swifter punishment. . . Any system needs to put into place adequate checks and balances. And this, [I]t is almost impossible to imagine five Black cops giving a White arrestee the kind of beat-down that Nichols allegedly received. That last is key to understanding his fixation on Racism as the diagnosis. He's be better off looking to the danger of authority and the need to restrain and monitor it. But Van Jones is lost in his own swamp, and since White Racism is the only rowboat he's ever used, it's no surprise he wriggles into it once again. I'll accept this much of his essay: Stop with the White Cop is the Devil canard, and appreciate supervision—which by the way amounts to supporting the police, because if you "defund" departments to the bone, you are quite likely to short the supervisory end. These cops were in a "special unit," specially trained, and misguided faith in that training seems to have allowed them too much independence, and to administer "street justice" without adequate oversight. Also recognize the rarity of this crime. Not only was a man beaten to death by a gang of armed men, but he was pretty much left on the pavement like a sack of trash, not quite dead, as everybody, bystanders, EMS personnel and the thugs themselves, displayed a shocking indifference that I believe is criminal in itself. Memphis has a lot to answer for, police departments everywhere can look at this atrocity as instructive.

Jones is doing nothing of value to help people of a community that he purports to care about. Blaming racism is silly. It simply doesn’t work to constantly blame a nebulous group of others for personal problems. Perhaps he might broaden his mind from the ideas he’s held since childhood and blame the destructive habits of the poor blacks themselves. That is, if he really cares.

So Van Jones writes, "it is almost impossible to imagine five Black cops giving a White arrestee the kind of beat-down that Nichols allegedly received." Hmm... How long have we endured the previous nonsense—"[I]t is almost impossible to imagine five Black cops giving a Black arrestee the kind of beat-down"—as an argument for hiring people who "look like" the people they are policing. Use "affirmative action," that is, lower your standards, as necessary. It turns out that notion is completely specious in present day America, specious being a synonym for several words Lucianne doesn't allow.

This kind of racism happens every night in every large city in this country. The difference is that these blacks wore police uniforms. The only thing that is the same from other incidents like this over the years, is that once again a young black man argued with police officers after being pulled over, refused to obey police directions, and fought with the police after doing so.

What is racism? Is it when you see someone who is ethnically different and you vilify denigrate them for their looks? Or is it when you see a ethnicity known to be plagued with bad actors and assume one of that ethnicity committing a crime to also be a bad actor? Well I can think of a couple of things Van. One would be Tyre ran from the cops. That was stupid. The second and most interesting is there is information out there today that several of those cops may have been affiliated with a major gang in Memphis. Could be this was gang activity. Besides, don't you remember when all the blacks were destroying communities and targeting black businesses? They used the excuse of 'skin folk, not kin folk' to get away with targeting their own kind. You really need to stop being so ignorant.

In a recent appearance on Fox News, Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, listened while host Sean Hannity listed some of the potential Republican candidates she might have to run against if she decides to seek the White House in 2024. After he named former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, former Secretary of State and former CIA director Mike Pompeo, and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Haley paused and then said with a smile, “Most of them are my friends. … Let the best woman win.” It was a clever line, but does it hint at

Democrats are proposing giving federal workers an 8.7% pay increase for toiling through the Trump administration and the coronavirus pandemic. The suggested pay increase for the 2 million federal workers would take effect in 2024, and would come after they received the 4.6% raise this year from President Biden.  “For years now, federal employees have risked their health and safety working on the frontlines of this pandemic,” Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said in a press release announcing that he and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) would reintroduce the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates, or FAIR Act.

Thomas Lifson adds: Video of the Memphis beating was on many cable news channels. Did they all receive this warning?

A now former police officer in Georgia believes he was pressured into quitting his job because of warnings from his superiors over his views on gay marriage.  Jacob Kersey, 19, resigned from the department in Port Wentworth, just a few miles outside Savannah, after refusing to remove a post on Facebook regarding gay marriage and his Christian faith.  Kersey - who joined the department at a young age in part because he was inspired by how they would 'bring peace' to his 'broken home' growing up - wrote in the post: 'God designed marriage. Marriage refers to Christ and the church. That's why there's no such thing as homosexual marriage.'

The president’s son reportedly listed the Wilmington home as his address in the wake of his 2017 divorce from ex-wife Kathleen Buhle. Riots broke out in Memphis and are rapidly spreading through the usual urban areas. The purported rationale is the horrific beating to death in Memphis of Tyre Nichols captured on video and released by the police. As Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) observes, Nichols’ beating was administered by “Black officers in a majority Black city with a Black police chief.” The officers involved have been criminally charged, but the media to which every Black killed by a cop is just proof that we are still in the Selma, Alabama world of decades ago -- another case of some innocent Black person victimized by racist oppressors. The odious Joy Reid at MSNBC highlighted

In October of 1990, the Peninsula Humane Society, a nonprofit animal adoption facility based in San Mateo, shocked the San Francisco Bay Area with a newspaper ad that felt like something out of grindhouse cinema. Published in the San Francisco Chronicle and other local newspapers, the four-page ad’s central image featured three barrels overflowing with recently euthanized cats, captured in various stages of rigor mortis. The headline read “This is one HELL of a job,” and then in smaller print, “And we couldn’t do it without you.”

According to a story published on Saturday, the scope of Joe Biden’s classified documents scandal may be bigger than previously thought. Sources close to the investigation say in addition to classified documents, the FBI also seized notebooks from Biden’s Wilmington, Del., home, which were reportedly written by Biden while he was vice president. “The notebooks were seized because Biden’s notes on some of the pages relate to his official business as vice president, including details of his diplomatic engagements during the Obama administration, and may refer to classified information, this same person said,
