Huge wind turbines – taller than the

Bloomberg Business Week, no foe of green energy, headlines: Wind Turbines Taller Than the Statue of Liberty Are Falling Over.” [snip] A motorist had reported that one of the huge turbines at a nearby wind farm had collapsed in dramatic fashion. The steel tower, which once stood hundreds of feet tall, was buckled in half, and the turbine blades, whose rotation took the machine higher than the Statue of Liberty, were splayed across the wheat field below. The turbine, made by General Electric Co., had been in operation less than a year.

Comments:

Great news! I hope they ALL fall down.
Worse than useless, they are very expensive, and totally undependable, requiring equal capacity of NORMAL coal or gas fired power plants be available for those frequent times when they are NOT working.

Hubris. The Greens are charging ahead despite all the evidence that wind and solar are NEVER going to replace carbon based fuels. That is not due to any decision but the reality of the limits of solar, wind, and their supporting and necessary technologies such as storage batteries. This article highlights another weakness of wind power, the operational environment is very demanding. But the Greens are rushing headlong over a cliff and taking the rest of us along with them.

Greaaat... These wind turbines, if not chopping up birds while standing or causing whales to beach themselves, will kill even more creatures when they collapse.

Wind energy is great if you make it for ONE house / farm not near neighbors or even a couple of places as it would be about the size of the windmills used for generations on farms. It never should have been to power the grid. The same with solar power, use it for remote places or even for ONE house in a SUNNY area. Trying to upsize these technologies is a huge mistake.

I used to drive through Iowa, Ohio and Indiana and think someone should borrow a backhoe and dig up a trunk line to the windmill farm then borrow one of those 400 horse all wheel drive tractors and pull the trunk line. I'd bet a mile of line would come out.

Re #6, actually they emit very LOW frequency pulsing noises. High frequencies don't travel far, but low frequencies travel long distances. People who live near these things, like miles away, report endless low frequency pulsing which drives them batty after a while.

It has been about a decade now, here along the shores of Lake Erie, at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, when the wind turbine exploded, casting chunks of carbon all over the Center's parking lot. Fortunately, it happened at 4 AM, and no one was hurt. The Center chose not to replace the gadget.

A modern nuclear power station generating a thousand Megawatts occupies one square mile area. A wind power farm of the same capacity will require 412 square miles. Where is the land going to come from? Then again blades, motors etc. have a fisted year life. And need to be replaced at higher inflation driven prices. Besides the unpredictable nature of wind (and solar for that matter) requires coupling with a natural gas unit of equal capacity. This whole business is nuts.

I was invited to participate in a week long Kaizen (process improvement and reduction) for large wind turbine manufacturing. We did not concentrate on the internal DC gen and gear box but what the team understood to be limits was; the mast had a useful service life of 25 years. To build the mast to last a decade longer would cost millions more. It really didn't matter if they could make it support for longer service because the bearing assembly supporting the dynamic load exerted on the blade hub was about the same 25 years. So in extreme wind like thunderstorm wind shears how long?

One thing the engineers forgot about was the additional load on the towers due to bird strikes. In Palm Springs they send out crews every week to pick up all of the dead birds, including eagles and hawks. If a hunter was killing these birds, he would be in jail for a long time. But as a public utility, they are held harmless from the incidental deaths and killings of protected species.

The UN report states that if global temperatures reach 1.5 C above the pre-industrial temperature norm of 1850-1900, the resulting melting of the polar ice caps, rising oceans, and unprecedented ecological disaster will follow.

Natural immunity to disease is, or at least was, a well-known concept in medicine. By disease, I mean viral infections. One can’t develop natural immunity to diseases like diabetes or heart failure. Many of us remember “chicken pox parties” where when one kid was infectious, he or she was invited over to play with your kids, so they all got infected and then they did not have to worry about getting chicken pox again, due to natural immunity. The CDC defines it as follows: “Natural immunity is acquired from exposure to the disease organism through infection with the actual disease.”

The Ukrainians have not only held their own, but have managed to liberate a good chunk of their conquered territory. They’ve been buoyed tremendously by a constant influx of Western military aid. I argue here, against a small but vocal conservative faction, that we should continue this aid. There has been plenty of unhelpful hyperbole on both sides of the debate. Prominent pro-Ukrainers have attempted to equate opposition to Ukrainian aid as opposition to democracy itself. Michael Beschloss, NBC’s resident Rent-A-Zinn, referencing members of Congress who didn’t applaud Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent speech, and in Stalinist fashion, tweeted “we need to know from them exactly why.”

I don’t agree with everything Archibald says, both factually and theoretically, but I thought his essay is interesting enough to bring to your attention. The premise of Archibald’s claim that China is not as forbidding as Xi Jinping makes it appear is summed up in a single sentence: “China has a lot of structural problems that make it a fragile state, a frail state and even potentially a future failed state.” Archibald makes five major points: One: China’s demographic games have been disastrous. Mao, who believed in big battalions, deliberately encouraged massive population growth
