People in an Atlanta neighborhood are concerned about a possible long-term closure of their Walmart after a fire closed the store a month ago. It’s the location on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in northwest Atlanta. Channel 2 Action News spoke with those in the community about the importance of the store. “Losing this store will be a huge loss to the community,” Atlanta City Councilman Byron Amos said. The Westside United Coalition and Vine City Civic Association held a community candlelight vigil on Sunday night on the closure of the Vine City Walmart. The store opened in January 2013.

Is it just me or does it seem like not much good happens on any roadway named after the good Reverend?

Was there stealing and theft at the store? Walmart just doesn't close stores without a solid reason. Where there's smoke there's fire, npi.

"In May 2022, Walmart was forced to temporarily close a location in Atlanta after a fire was set in the store's clothing department, CBS 46 reported. That same store on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive was targeted again recently with an intentional fire set right before Christmas, 11Alive reported..."

As Chris Rock once said:
" I don’t care where you are in America, if you on Martin Luther King Boulevard, there’s some violence going down. If you're lost on King Blvd. at night you should Run. Run! Run!"

They're going to light candles for a store that burned down? Will they be handing out Mensa applications also?

Democrat sh_thole cities are losing retail as shoplifting and theft with no prosecutions cost more than the margins on sales. It will accelerate as criminals that run elections reward their kindred spirit.

White Supremacy on display! Where are the food deserts in white neighborhoods? Dey be tryin’ to kill us! /sarcasm off
I’m too old and too damned tired of pretending we don’t know what is killing this nation. I live every day in pain from military career and am prepared to burn-in when it’s time. I can’t be the only one and believe the federal government knows there’s enough men out here like me who are keeping their powder dry for the big event that breaks everything open. Am sick of the thug demo crying for reparations, and hope to be a part of dispersing reparations by planting freedom seeds in as many as possible. Not sorry.

I wouldn't give two craps about their whining. Arson on two separate occasions? Fudge 'em. Look to your so called community for the reason you can't have nice things. Crabs in a barrel syndrome.

If Walmart is sensible, that store will never reopen. It was probably losing money from theft and vandalism. Another case of the monkeys cutting down the banana trees then wondering why there are no more bananas.

What that area needs is to defund the police and more critical race theory. They could also use busloads of illegal immigrants. All the things that democrats have to offer since they seem to love democrats so much.

When will people make the connection between youth violence, lack of parental supervision and the inevitable closing of community businesses?

At least 2 arson fires? One of these times the arsonist will get lucky and many people will die. Close the store for the safety of the people.

If someone had died, along with the ever popular candlelight vigil, there could be the mountainous high pile of flowers and stuffed animals. No actual cures for the problem, though!

If Walmart repairs the store and it re-opens, some copycat will set the place on fire again. Then someone will die in a fire. Then we'll have another multi-million dollar lawsuit filed by Benjamin Crump about the death of someone just turning their life around.

#10, a problem with your observation is (and I've lived it) they just move to another Walmart, degrade it, and make it scary to shop there.

In some neighborhoods, it's a better business model to just close the store because of shop lifting. It's just not worth it to keep a store open when the losses are almost equal to the profit. Having worked with someone who worked security part time is a less than decent area of Baltimore the closing of a store isn't always because armed robbery.

Violent areas drive away businesses. And even if a business tries to stay open, they often have trouble keeping employees who perceive that their lives are in danger coming to work or working in 'bad neighborhoods'.
I suppose this will be blamed on "evil big business" when it is rightly caused by violent urban people, almost always of a tiny minority type.

The unwritten subtext is the cost to Walmart of shoplifting in the store and crime in the neighborhood. It is no more complicated than that.

Did the community members also drive away every other business in the area? Why doesn't some enterprising young community member or an activist group put their energies together to open their own locally owned food store? Maybe the thugs won't steal and try to burn up a locally owned store and the community will show some pride in the store. Rather than sit around with their hands out and a woe is me attitude, get off your butts and do something for your community. Unfortunately, the local residents have become too conditioned to have everything done for them rather than doing for themselves.

I don't see mass crime as a "black" thing. It is a "poverty" thing, that so many blacks in this country are condemned to because so many of the black "leaders" have gotten rich keeping black people on the Demon-Rat welfare plantation by preaching "permanent victimhood" instead of the importance of hard work and education and stable marriages.
Until strong black leaders rise up in the image of MLK instead of Jesse Jackson and Louis Farakhan, and start demanding that blacks rise up from permanent victim status to intelligent and hard working Americans, expect more stores like this Wal-Mart to say "enough" and shut down at the first chance they get rather than continue to be robbed blind!!!

I'm not sure exactly how this applies, but...back in 1956, the citizens and businesses of Plattsburgh, New York were complaining about the new AFB, home of the 380th Bomb Wing, Strategic Air Command.
The base had B 47s and KC 97 Air Refuelers. (I still remember spending the night on Lake Champlain, pulling bodies out of a KC97 = not a good memory.
The Base Commander, without comment, had us paid with two dollar bills. on one pay day.
The complaints stopped.

Vine City and Bankhead are two sections of West Atlanta. About 25 years ago Bankhead Blvd had its name changed to Hollowell Blvd because the name Bankhead Blvd had developed such a reputation for prostitutes and drug dealers. Like a name change was going to make a difference. It didn't. That roads reputation was merely a reflection of the neighborhoods of it's location.

So long as good people and not only allow evil to flourish, but refuse to call it out and help put an end to it, these companies are going to leave. They aren't there as a criminal charity.
