Four people were killed in a 46-car pileup on the Ohio turnpike Friday afternoon due to the winter storm that has swept the nation. The initial crash occurred at around 11:45 a.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound between Route 53 and State Route 4 in Sandusky County near the Eire County line, according to officials via WTVG. At around 12:30 p.m., other vehicles started crashing and forming a major pileup. (Tweet/Photos) Authorities confirmed that the weather was a factor that caused the pileup. The crash is still under investigation. “This is a stark reminder of what can happen when you get behind the wheel and try to drive in bad weather conditions,”

That stretch is dead flat, bordered by wide open farm fields, plowed(and harvested) to the fencelines/ditches... there used to be grapevines/snow fence along the edges, no more. When the it's very cold the snow is dry and light, the wind blows...too cold for salt to melt it., even plowing it to the side just adds to the amount that blows around....people drive like it's summertime, even then they don't leave much room between, travel in packs, with long open spaces between the packs of vehicles, fully half of which are semis...double trailers too. Right at that road/overpass is the regional insurance auction yard for totaled vehicles, hundreds dragged in from all over the state...just the motorcycles often number over 100.

Road crews in Columbus aren't even salting at this point. Too cold for salt to be effective. Roads are still covered, so I'm not doing the 70 mile drive to be home with the family. Beer and lots of Skyline Chili for me today.

Northwest Ohio is possibly the flattest region in The United States. The highest spots in Wood County are the bridges over I75. It is very uncommon for there to be a windless day. I can’t imagine how brutal the wind was on the Ohio Turnpike up there these last two days. It was scary enough here in the Appalachian foot hills. Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas!

A shame to see such a bad accident. Wintry travel requires much additional care, and just hopping on the interstate and setting the cruise control to 75 mph often goes awry in bad weather. I make it an important survival choice to not travel on wintry turnpikes unless traffic is very light. Far better to go on secondary roads in times of slippery conditions and heavy traffic. We once passed a pair of semis laying on their sides across the eastbound lanes of I-70, followed by 40 miles of stopped traffic. We got off on our side and drove on a two lane road for about 70 miles until we were able to clear the area of freezing rain. Two reasons....the above kind of mass accident, and even if you aren't caught in the accident, you'll be trapped on the interstate, potentially for many hours. Two lane roads are far safer and more flexible in times of low traction.

A Seattle official has been handed a sarcastic award for banning city workers from displaying Christmas or Hanukkah decorations in their own homes while on Zoom calls to avoid offending colleagues with different beliefs.  Gloria Ngezaho is the workforce equity manager for King County, which encompasses Seattle, and was handed the Ebenezer Award from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. Ngezaho's draconian edict was first revealed in November, and he was handed the award last week over his 'Guidelines for Holiday Decorations' rules.

With so much darkness around us today, it is easy to lose hope and faith.  To be sure, those who wish us ill take pleasure from our pain.  However, it is often when we are nearly broken that God lifts us up and provides us peace.  This time of year is filled with those moments.  Call them Christmas miracles or answered prayers, but they are real and worth remembering. One such story that has always stuck with me is that of Fritz Vincken, who was twelve years old and living with his mother, Elisabeth, in a small hunting cabin in the Ardennes Forest during the worst fighting of the Battle of the Bulge.

The organization also renovated the home of Cpl. WASHINGTON — In the last vote of 2022, the House on Friday passed a $1.7 trillion spending package — including dozens of Illinois projects — sending the measure to President Joe Biden to sign. The measure, often referred to as the “Omnibus” bill because the appropriations cover a very wide range of government activities, was approved on a 225-201 roll-call vote. Nine Republicans — including Illinois members Adam Kinzinger and Rodney Davis, both lame ducks — joined Democrats in passing the measure. The National Guard troops’ paychecks were disrupted due to congressional drama surrounding the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that Congress recently approved. After weeks of negotiation, Congress came to a deal on the omnibus spending package. Included in the spending bill is, among other things, a $45 billion aid package for Ukraine. Unfortunately, common sense and the courage to use it publicly seem a quality in short supply in Hollywood, which seems more dominated by liberals who go along with whatever the prevailing narrative is. Instead, it’s more common to see liberal false narratives pushed, as was the case with what Bette Midler tweeted about Kyle Rittenhouse on Friday. [Tweet] Let’s start with: it’s not clear that is even Rittenhouse. But, that didn’t slow down Midler’s effort to attack. So much of the liberal establishment is truly ignorant
