Who will be the Republican presidential nominee? Trump? DeSantis? Some squish that is guaranteed to lose but is relatively unoffensive? GOP psychics, tea leaf and tarot card readers, and pundits have speculated on who will get the nod to place their backside in the gunsights of CNN and the accompanying remora and angle for the chance to sit behind the Resolute Desk. Or possibly disappoint millions of Republican voters. Since the 2022 elections finally stumbled to a halt on Tuesday night, it is of course the (un)official start of the ’24 presidential campaign. Joe Biden is set to make his announcement “soon,”

Bolton got his wish...more publicity and "buzz" for doing nothing. Certainly there is a new book in the offing. Every candidate publishes one. He's not a serious candidate, and there are "others" out there who will declare in due time. He just wanted another 15 minutes, and he got them.

A Member of Parliament (MP) for Britain’s governing Conservative (Tory) Party plans to put forward a bill that will allow Parliament to strip Prince Harry and wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, of their titles, in response to their politically-charged Netflix series. Bob Seely, who represents the Isle of Wight in the House of Commons, believes that the woke couple who abandoned their public duties to pursue activism and public duties years ago now, have forfeited the right to royal status with the publication of the series. The big-headline Netflix documentary has been criticised for trashing Britain as a hub for racism and slavery, cast Brexit

The GOP actually won this one. Republicans, it seemed, were on the verge of losing yet again in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) fight with Democrats angling to include a number of controversial and unrelated provisions including the Journalism Competition and Preservative Act (JCPA)–a controversial bill that would create media cartels. Conservatives have been furious with Republican leaders in recent years because the dynamic is usually that the GOP always caves to the Democrats no matter the issue or bill, the only questions being how fast and how much the GOP caves. But all that changed this week, as a ragtag and frankly odd coalition of Republicans

On Thursday morning, news broke that Brittney Griner was headed home. The embattled WNBA star who once asked her league to stop playing the national anthem had been imprisoned for months in Russia, after being caught with hash oil. A blockbuster trade was made to secure her release. Or at least, it was a blockbuster for one side. Russia received notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout. The United States got Griner and no one else. But while the deal was lopsided, it was arguably necessary. The Biden administration swears that imprisoned former US Marine Paul Whelen wasn’t being offered by Russia, and anytime you are dealing with a dictatorial state,

There was a time in America when Abraham Lincoln was perceived as pretty upright — people even elected him president. Fast-forward to honors such as the penny (1909), the five-dollar bill (1914), and the Lincoln Memorial (1922). But a man born in 1809 is unacceptably out of step with today’s superior sensibilities. Such is the assertion of an article published by Syracuse University’s student paper, The Daily Orange. Per the piece, Joe Biden’s former campus home hosts two statues honoring Lincoln — portraits of “a president worthy of our admiration and sympathy.” However, don’t be fooled: [S]uch awe-inspiring statues can be deceiving,

Following the midterm elections, Democrats gained two new members who have already been outspoken in their progressive beliefs. Last year, Lee introduced a bill that would end cash bail in Pennsylvania. She has insisted that the majority of those who are arrested don’t pose a threat to society,

The 14-year sentence handed down on Monday will run consecutively to the five years that he is already serving in previous cases, U.S. District Judge James V. Selna ruled.

Those can include up to two years of “corrective labor.” Yet Griner was charged with smuggling cannabis into Russia, which holds a prison sentence of five to 10 years. Griner was sentenced to nine
Why Does the GOP Elite Hate Its Own Base? 30 replies

It is one of the most bitter and tragic ironies of our contemporary politics that the leadership of one of America’s two major political parties, the Republican Party, utterly despises that party’s very own voting base. The GOP elite’s scorn for its own voters has, at this point, been a long time in the making. The trend accelerated during the 2009-2011 rise of the Tea Party, a grassroots movement fueled by constitutionalism and anti-elite populism. The crustier elements of the Republican establishment ran as far away as possible from the Tea Party, and the 2012 presidential coronation of private equity plutocrat Mitt Romney effectively killed the movement.
Does Trump Really Want To Be President Again? 30 replies
Posted by PageTurner 12/8/2022 1:30:40 PM Post Reply
Team Trump has sometimes compared former President Donald Trump's current quest for a non-sequential second term to two-term President Grover Cleveland's similar three election bids. Cleveland remains our only elected president (1884) to have lost a reelection bid (1888) -- in a disputed vote -- only to be reelected four years later in 1892. Yet Trump seems determined instead to follow a different, and bullheaded, Teddy Roosevelt model. Roosevelt left the presidency in 1908, sat out four years, and then lost a reelection bid in 1912, split and alienated the Republican Party, and ensured the election of the progressive Woodrow Wilson.

The Georgia runoff is over. Raphael Warnock came out on top (as expected). And Republicans are once again running the “quality candidate” canard as the reason for Herschel Walker’s loss (in addition to the overblown, overused, Trump scapegoat). Yet despite the fact Walker was outspent by Warnock nearly 3 to 1 (Warnock spent $126,232,942 to Walker’s $48,455,356), Walker performed remarkably well, netting 48.6 percent of the vote to Warnock’s 51.4 percent. This as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp only came out in full force for Walker after he coasted to reelection in November (loaning his field organizing team to the Senate Leadership Fund — the GOP’s Senate super PAC which backed Walker).
