Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano is likely going to reach a major highway in the state unimpeded, as it moves within 2.5 miles of traffic on Sunday.
Many people on the Big Island in Hawaii are bracing for major upheaval if lava from Mauna Loa slides across a key road and blocks the quickest route connecting two sides of the island.
The molten rock could make the road impassable and force drivers to find alternate coastal routes in the north and south.
That could add hours to commute times, doctor's visits, and lorry deliveries.

What are you going to stop it with ? An executive order ?

Divert it with concrete barriers, perhaps.
Free the lava!

I suspect this volcano has already released more “global warming” gases than the US will running full blast for the next 50 years. Oh the humanity. We are all doomed.

Just change magma to maga and the liberals in the islands will leave no stone overturned to stop it.

Once again the absolutely idiotic vanity of man is on display. Where is any evidence that anyone can divert the magma?

It isn't a matter of will, the truth is they can't divert it.
FTA: "Paul Segall, a professor of geophysics at Stanford University who researches earthquakes and volcanoes, told CNN that countries have tried in the past to redirect their flows, but their efforts have mostly been expensive failures."

When the natives figure out how to stop or divert the flow they can get to work on tidal waves, hurricanes, tornadoes ........

Didn't King Canute demonstrate the futility of such efforts over a thousand years ago? Global warmists should take heed.

Man can practice his clean, green living doing everything to help the earth then one volcano ruins all the green activist advancements not to mention money poured into it in one day. It was all for nothing while man thinks he can stop flowing magma, what a joke. I have an idea pass a law and a tax to fight 'magma'. The liberal way is the best way.

From what I've heard, the amount of lava coming from the volcano in slowing down which if one is to believe the volcanologists, it signals that the eruption is coming to an end. If that is the true, then an effort to at least slow the march to the highway could be done. I suspect those in charge don't want to mess with the ecology of the island by having bulldozers tear up the ground.

Hand wringing millennials across the nation will light candles, hold hands, and demand legislation outlawing illegal lava deposits. Gen Z will curl up with their comfort stuffed animal and make TikTok's about how it is another move by the patriarchy to disrupt their lives, and complain about the racism of the volcano targeting ethnic Hawaiians.

Not enough time to build a tunnel under the road, eh?
Yeah, like the tunnel in CA so some snail(?) could go under the road rather than be killed on the road.

Maybe they can gather all the climate protesters and have them sit in front of the flow. That should fix…something.
It would for me.

Stopping a volcano ? How ridiculous can you get. The entire Hawaiian chain of islands were formed from volcanoes.

Which way will the magma flow. Any way it wants!
Have to greenies weighed in yet? Can't make a final decision without the greenies.

With a few notable exceptions (Wailua, Kona, some resorts on the coast), much of the western side of the big island is a wasteland of fairly recent lava flows (within last 500 years or so). Anyone driving down the main highway on the western side will travel through broad areas consisting of hardened lava flows recent enough that no vegetation has yet overgrown.
For whatever reasons, the lava flows from Kilauea seems to prefer flowing downhill to the western side of the island.

Wake me when Oahu erupts and buries the new Obama home. Not that I wish him ill :-) Hawaii was created by a volcano, it's going to misbehave from time to time.

More lava control laws are called for. I suggest dropping bottles of vodka in the name of Madame Pele in the path of the approaching flow. Stopping a flow of lava is similar to controlling climate. Can’t be done.

multiple suggestion,1. Dig (blast) a diversionary trench very fast 2. Do what previous Islanders did and sacrifice Obama or/and Harris.

Like others have (correctly) opined here, only the idiots at the Mail would have us believe that diverting a lava flow is even an option. No map of the flow or where this major highway is in relation to it. Author keeps talking about vog, but even in the box entitled "What is 'vog'?" he still doesn't tell us what it is. And it's apparently native only to Hawaii - no other volcanoes in the world produce it. One of those stories that convinces me once again that - like Playboy - the Mail should be looked at only for the pictures.

The only case that I am aware of where people were able to successfully control volcanic flow was on Iceland where a lava flow threatened the only harbor on the island with being filled with lava.
They got gigantic seawater pumps and hosed down the leading edge of the lava strategically to redirect the flow away from the harbor. It took weeks, or even months, I can't remember the time, but they froze the lava and redirected it and saved their harbor.
Generally, it is best to just get out of the way when natural forces are running wild.

I think the best way to stop the lava is to subsidize it, perhaps a guaranteed income.
