American Airlines is closing its San Francisco
crew base and asking 400 flight attendants
to leave California or leave the airline

The mass email hit some flight attendants' inboxes mid-flight. "Today it's with great regret that I let you know about our decision to close the SFO flight attendant base," American Airlines executive Brady Byrnes said in the September memo obtained by Insider. In closing its San Francisco base, citing economic factors and shifting customer demand, American presented 400 flight attendants with a choice that many said felt impossible to make: leave the airline or leave the state. The base is home to some of the carrier's most senior flight attendants, two-thirds of whom have been at the airline for 13

Comments:

They are bailing on CA largely due to costs. Flight Attendants will have to move to Phoenix, Dallas, or some other city even further away - or will be terminiated.

They shouldn't necessarily have to re-locate to another hub city to keep their jobs. My older son is a Captain for Frontier and he deadheads from his Denver residence to his Las Vegas base location all the time. It is common for many pilots and flight attendants to deadhead at no cost to them from their out of state residence to their base location. All of the major airlines allow this. But apparently American doesn't want 400 flight attendants deadheading. Same issue for American's SFO-based pilots?

I suspect the main reason is that "In June, the Supreme Court ruled that a state law requiring workers get a break every few hours does in fact apply to California-based airline employees." This probably means if they are based in CA the rule applies. Any bets on what party they all voted for?

With the news out earlier this week that the governor is planning on giving every Black in the state (and the hundreds of thousands who will be moving there in the next year) $233,000 in reparations, the flight attendants would be jumping at the chance of moving out of state. Except of course, those who are Black.

Ordered or asked? Move or quit is more of a threat than a choice. I'm not condemning the administrative decision, as it could have been the only way the company could sustain operations financially. I'm calling out the headline for blatant distortion.

This has more to do with laying off higher paid, older workers than it does simply closing a base. Big Corporate HRs read the same books, and right now the "big thing" is to layoff "highly-compensated" workers (i.e. older ones), and they do this "legally" by shuttering specific locations where the census of such workers is highest. They do these site closures full-well knowing that older, more established workers, will NOT relocate to any new location, and will instead grudgingly take their severance and retire. I know, because I say my company of 30+ years do this time and time again, shedding thousands of years of valuable experience each time, like it was nothing more than dead skin.

#24 Many here have experienced retirement and am willing to bet that many, if not most, didn’t know what to do with their newfound freedom and comfort. I’m only 58 yrs old, retired comfortably at 57, and discovered that I was truly free for the first time in my life. It took close to a year for me to actually slow down and take my sweet time doing everything. A bitter old scold may fear retirement because without their job, they’re nothing. I have no pity for such lousy humans, especially if they’re American. There’s still a big, beautiful world out there to explore.

Re #27. I retired about a dozen years ago after working for just under 40 years. As folks here probably know by now, I have many hobbies and I make things and fix things. People have asked me 'what it's like to retire'. When ask this sort of a question, I get very "earnest" and look them in the eyes and say, "Well, I don't know about you, but for me there was a real adjustment period for me to be able to adapt to retirement. It took me, Oh, about 9 seconds or so." And a BIG grin. I have a million interests, 20 books backlogged on my reading list, dozens of projects that I can only get to one at a time, family scattered all over this country to visit, and am way too busy to be bored. For example today we spent a couple of hours cleaning up leaves in our yard, and I had lunch with two friends that I have known for 30+ years, and we talked about a niece's new baby about a month away, and a lot about a three day training course I took with some retired SEALs on a wide range of "interesting" skills that happened last month. WAY too many things going on to be bored.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico/WASHINGTON - When Vladimir Castellanos learned that COVID-19 restrictions blocking him and other migrants from claiming asylum at the U.S. border with Mexico may not be terminated this week, he said he felt deceived. Castellanos and his brother are Venezuelans, and they were among dozens of migrants gathered on both sides of the Rio Grande on Monday night in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas, with some lighting small fires to keep warm as temperatures dropped toward freezing. NEW YORK -- There are new fears that New York City could be hit with a surge of migrants. This week, Title 42, a policy that has kept many asylum seekers from entering the country, is set to expire. Mayor Eric Adams is warning that there could be upwards of 1,000 migrants bused into the city each and every week, if the policy is allowed to expire. It's not clear how he arrived at that number, but it is clear that there is concern the system could be overwhelmed. The U.S.-Mexico border has been packed with migrants desperate to get in.

The question in the title needs, I believe, critical examination. Why DOES the Left hate Trump so much? The answer, as usual, can largely be found by analyzing history. But first. Do they hate him because the average price of a gallon of gas in his administration was far lower than under Biden? Is it because inflation was low (around 2%) and trending downward? Is it that the USA was energy independent and didn’t need to beg our enemies for oil, deplete our strategic oil reserve or sell it to China? Is it because black and Hispanic unemployment was lower than at any time in history?

The Dems of course found a sleazy way around that. The tax code allows the committee to look at people’s tax returns to provide “oversight” of the Internal Revenue Service, and by writing an official report on their findings,

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said Monday he supports bringing Republican House business to a halt until as late as March next year if it means electing someone besides House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to be speaker. Gaetz, one of five outspoken opponents of McCarthy, told Charlie Kirk in an interview he would rather wait weeks and have “sort of a turbulent takeoff” than have McCarthy be speaker. “I’m saying we could see the cherry blossoms bloom and not have a speaker. I hope it doesn’t come to that,” Gaetz said, in reference to the popular flower in D.C. that blooms annually around the end of March.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Tuesday joined 13 Republicans who vowed to tank any priorities of GOP senators who vote for the 4,155 page omnibus bill that was negotiated with Democrats before a new Republican majority could take control of the House. Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Scott Perry (R-PA), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ), along with nine other conservatives House members, signed a letter Tuesday promising to block any priorities of the Republican senators who rushed to support the omnibus deal with Democrats just days before Congress leaves town for Christmas.
